Award-winning singer-songwriter Graybill has a few messages for you on his new album, The Path Less Traveled . "It's Alright," "Don't Quit," and "Let That BS Go." He's in a decidedly introspective and reflective mood on the album's 11 tracks, singing songs about learning to accept what is and to stay positive. click to enlarge Photo Courtesy Of Graybill THE POWER OF POSITIVITY Good Medicine and KCBX present award-winning singer-songwriter Graybill at Club Car Bar on Feb. 28 . Graybill—whose first name is Kevin, though he just goes by his last name—was born in San Diego and lived his first five years there before moving with his family to Washington state. "My parents were SoCal beach folk, so though I grew up mostly in Washington, there was somewhat of a conscious/subconscious coming home feeling about moving back to California later in life," he explained. "I never really adjusted to the cold winters up north. Just gimmie that sunshine, please." When he relocated to San Luis Obispo in 2017, he'd never even heard of our town. He simply followed his then girlfriend from their home in Seattle to Cal Poly for her grad school internship. "When I landed here, the live music scene was electric," he recalled. "It just felt like there was live music everywhere on any given day, and I just dove right in and never looked back. I'm so grateful for this music community for embracing me the way it did." Music is now his full-time job, but he took the road less traveled getting there. On his website, he mentions that living in Seattle in his 20s was about "blurring the line between vocation and play," weaving experiences such as "mushroom foraging, tech startups, eastern philosophy, World Beard Championships, bio-hacking, dog walking, Uber driving, improv theater, and even 200-mile bike rides." He didn't even write his first song until he was 19. "So, fast forward to me at 18 years old, after having played the guitar for a few years, and beginning to try and learn and sing songs of singer-songwriters. Eventually I started making up my own words, then you start moving around a couple of chords, changing the rhythm a little, and you go, 'Whoa, I guess I just wrote my first song. I'm a songwriter now!' Officially, I would say I wrote my first fully original song at 19 years old, the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of college. The song was called 'Crash and Burn.'" He finally got around to recording his debut album in 2021. High Tide/Low Tide was essentially two six-song EPs packaged together. The High Tide collection was optimistic, upbeat full-band arrangements while the Low Tide collection was sparse arrangements and introspective. The recording won Album of the Year at the New Times Music Awards. "I certainly was surprised by winning album of the year in 2021. A big part of the reason why was the selection date had passed by a few weeks, and I never heard from anyone. Friends of mine in other bands had already heard from the committee either way, so, I just thought that I didn't win anything, and the judges weren't fans of my music. "I went through the whole internal processing of having my album not be appreciated by critics and owning that I was still so proud of that album and wouldn't have changed anything. I still believed I did the best I could with those songs and loved my first album ... then I got an email saying they forgot to reach out, and I actually won first place! Ha! So, needless to say, it was a beautiful full-circle experience for me emotionally and professionally; and I was honored to have won the award in an area with so much talent." His sophomore effort is another collection of hooky, breezy, infectiously fun songs, including one featuring one of Graybill's influences, G. Love. You can find the album on all the usual platforms. Good Medicine and KCBX present Graybill in Club Car Bar on Friday, Feb. 28 (8:30 p.m.; all ages; $12.56 at my805tix.com ), which also happens to be his 39th birthday. He'll be backed by Tracy Morgan (drums), Adrian Libertini (bass), Bobcat Rob (keys and lead guitar), and Logan Castro (cello). "I'll be playing all originals—a mix of songs from both High Tide/Low Tide and The Path Less Traveled ," Graybill concluded. If you like Jack Johnson, G. Love & Special Sauce, Nick Drake, and Michael Franti, you'll love him. Good Medicine and Numbskull also present Minneapolis songwriter Mason Jennings at The Siren on Friday, Feb. 28 (7 p.m.; 21-and-older; $30.08 at goodmedicinepresents.com ). He's touring in support of his new album, Underneath the Roses , and its first single, "Only Lovers Welcome." The single's video is a moving tribute to love regardless of gender and sexual orientation. It's guaranteed to make bigots' heads explode, which is why I love it. In press materials, Jennings explained that the album's songs were "written in an unprecedented burst" following the birth of his son, Western, in March 2022. "I hadn't written any songs in about a year. I had been dealing with the psychological aftereffects of the pandemic as well as the loss of my dad. So, when Western was born, I didn't expect to be writing much. But immediately he was responding to music in a very intense way. For this album, between May and November 2022, I wrote 48 songs! They certainly uplifted me and connected me with the creative spirit, and spirit in general, again. They cover all kinds of ground but, when I listen back, I think the central theme is overcoming fear with love." click to enlarge Photo Courtesy Of The Rebirth Brass Band NOLA SOUNDS Good Medicine, Numbskull, and KCBX present the Rebirth Brass Band at The Siren on March 5 . I'm banging my head to Carry the 9's new unreleased track "Roots," which reminds us that we all fall down, but our roots hold us up and keep us strong. Punk fans won't want to miss this one. "People should expect three bands' worth of quality high-energy fun," Carry the 9 guitarist and vocalist Jeremy Rich said. "Out of the Ring reminds me of a bit of Social Distortion type vibe. Bunker Club is more of a punk 'n' roll type vibe or maybe a punkier rockabilly type sound. We're more '90s melodic Fat Wreck Chords type skater punk—Lagwagon, Offspring, Bad Religion, Rise Against, Face to Face, NOFX—as that's what we grew up on and still love. All the bands are good and good fun, and we're all friends as well." Carry the 9 released three songs about four years ago and are currently working on four new ones, including "Roots," which will be released to the public on Feb. 28. "We'll be playing all of the released and unreleased songs at the show," Rich added. click to enlarge Courtesy Photo By Chad Martel GOOD FISH Badfish—A Tribute to Sublime plays the Fremont Theater on March 5 . Scheffler rallies to win BMW for 5th PGA Tour victory of year. Rahm takes LIV points title

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler erased a four-shot deficit in five holes and then delivered a haymaker on the daunting par-3 17th by chipping in from 82 feet for birdie that carried him to victory Sunday in the BMW Championship for his fifth PGA Tour title of the year. Scheffler closed with a 3-under 67 for a two-shot victory and became the first player since Tiger Woods (2006-07) to win at least five times on the PGA Tour in consecutive years. Robert MacIntyre didn't make a birdie until the 16th hole but stayed in the game after losing his big lead, mostly when Scheffler began missing short putts. MacIntyre pulled within one shot of the lead going to the 17th, the toughest hole at Caves Valley, with a back right pin on a crispy green that sloped to the right toward the water. Scheffler went just left in the rough, the ball sitting up nicely but the shot still scary. He landed it some 60 feet short and watched it trickle, and then roll, and then slow again until it dropped into the cup. MacIntyre could only look at him and stare at the world's No. 1 player making other-worldly shots in another extraordinary season. MacIntyre, who made 18 birdies in the first 45 holes of the tournament, made only two over the last 27 holes. He shot 73. It's not over for Scheffler, who leads the 30 players who advanced to the Tour Championship at East Lake with a chance to become the first repeat FedEx Cup champion since the series began in 2007. All 30 players at East Lake can win the $10 million first-place check. LIV Golf League WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) — Jon Rahm successfully defended his LIV Golf season points title without winning an event all year, closing with an 11-under 60 before losing a playoff to Sebastian Munoz on the first extra hole in the Indianapolis event. Munoz won two days after becoming the first player to shoot 59 with a double bogey. The Colombian player —with Rahm hitting balls on driving range — birdied the final two holes in regulation for a 65 to match Rahm at 22 under at The Club at Chatham Hills. Rahm also lost on the first extra hole last week outside Chicago, falling to Dean Burmester in a three-way playoff that included Josele Ballester. On Sunday, Munoz beat the Spanish star won with a birdie on the par-4 18th in the playoff. Rahm took the season points title from Joaquin Niemann, a five-time winner this season. Niemann shot a 66 to tie for fourth at 17 under, his first top-10 finish of the year that he didn't win. Munoz led Torque GC to the team event championship. Torque finished at 64 under to break the LIV record of 53 under. LPGA Tour PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Akie Iwai joined twin sister Chisato as a rookie LPGA Tour winner at Columbia Edgewater, closing with a 6-under 66 for a four-stroke victory in The Standard Portland Classic. Akie Iwai capped the bogey-free round with birdies on the final two holes, running in an 18-footer on the last before Chisato rushed on the green and sprayed her with champagne. The 23-year-old Japanese player broke through in her first season on the LPGA Tour after winning six times on the JLPGA Tour. She had second-place finishes in Thailand in February and Los Angeles in April, then watched her sister win at Mayakoba in May in Mexico. On Sunday, Chisato Iwai shot a 64 to tie for third, five strokes back. The winner finished at 24-under 264 on the tree-lined course. She opened with consecutive 67s, then shot a 64 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round. American Gurleen Kaur was a career-best second, closing with a 65. Amateur Kiara Romero shot a 64 to tie for seventh at 16 under in her first tour start. The University of Oregon player won the 2023 U.S. Girls' Junior and 2025 Big Ten title. European Tour COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Marco Penge of England tapped in for birdie at the 18th hole for a 4-under 67 to win the Danish Golf Championship by one shot over Rasmus Hojgaard, who missed a chance to climb into the automatic qualifying position for the Ryder Cup. Hojgaard looked on course for the title in his home country when he powered into a four-shot lead midway through his front nine, only to drop four strokes in four holes from No. 10 and allow Penge to take the lead. Trailing by two on the par-5 closing hole at Furesø Golf Klub, Hojgaard made a 10-foot eagle. Penge missed the green to the left, chipped to 3 feet and made the birdie putt for his second European tour title this year. Hojgaard (69) was the runner-up and will remain outside the six automatic qualifying spots, just behind No. 6 Sepp Straka, in the race to get into Europe's team. Qualifying ends next week at the British Masters. PGA Tour Champions CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Richard Green of Australia won the Rogers Charity Classic for his first PGA Tour Champions title, birdieing the par-5 18th hole for a 5-under 65 and a one-stroke victory. Green held off Ricardo Gonzalez, the Argentine player who birdied the final two holes at Canyon Meadows for a 65 of his own. The 54-year-old Green won in his 91st start on the 50-and-over tour. He finished at 18-under 192 after opening with rounds of 65 and 62. Charles Schwab Cup leader Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, the second-round leader after consecutive rounds of 63, had a 68 to finish third at 16 under. He leads the tour with four victories this season. Korn Ferry Tour BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Emilio Gonzalez of Mexico won the Albertsons Boise Open for his first Korn Ferry Tour title, shooting a 10-under 61 for a one-stroke victory over Jeffrey Kang. Gonzalez played a late three-hole stretch in 4 under with a birdie on the par-4 15th, an eagle on the par-5 16th and a birdie on the par-3 17th. He finished at 22-under 262 at Hillcrest Country Club. Kang birdied two of the last three in a 65. Other tours Kazuki Higa closed with a 7-under 65 and won the ISPS Handa Explosion in the Summer with an eagle on the second playoff hole to defeat Ren Yonezawa, who shot 64. Higa won for the first time in three years and now has seven titles on the Japan Golf Tour. ... Giants' Jung Hoo Lee makes catch off glove, thigh and calf before pinning baseball between knees

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee may have made the catch of the year — at least. Tampa Bay's Yandy Díaz drove a pitch to deep right-center, known as Triples Alley at Oracle Park, and Lee made a play that created a buzz Sunday on social media as San Francisco beat the Rays 7-1. Lee ran to his left and while sliding on his left leg, the baseball bounced out of his glove. The ball traveled to his his left thigh and rolled down to his left calf before it popped up and he pinned it between his knees and snagged the ball with his glove. The speedy, 26-year-old South Korean has become a fan favorite in San Francisco since signing a sixth-year deal worth $113 million before the 2024 season. He's about to be even more popular. Lee has been perhaps the best player on the middle-of-the-pack Giants this season, playing regularly after his rookie season was shortened to 26 games due to injury. He has bounced back after having season-ending surgery on his dislocated left shoulder after getting injured crashing into an outfield wall. ___ AP MLB:

Latrell Mitchell cops massive new blow at hands of South Sydney teammate

Latrell Mitchell has an almighty fight on his hands to reclaim the fullback jersey for South Sydney, after a staggering performance from Jye Gray on Saturday night. Gray was best on-field as the Rabbitohs beat the Eels 20-16, taking them out of wooden spoon calculations. Gray had 27 runs for a whopping 221 metres, making six tackle-breaks, a line-break and a try assist. But it was his work on the defensive side of the ball that was most noteworthy. The Rabbitohs posted footage on Sunday of Gray's incredible field coverage on three-consecutive plays to deny Parramatta a try. Early in the second half, the diminutive fullback cut down the speedy Isaiah Iongi with a try-saving tackle when his opposite number looked destined to score. But not content with the brilliant tackle, Gray then raced across field and held Dylan Walker up close to the line on the very next play. Mitchell Moses then put in a grubber from 5m out on the next play, and once again it was Gray who was there to clean it up. "He is everywhere. I can't believe it," Steve Roach said in commentary for Fox League. "There must be two of him out there." But Gray wasn't finished. With two minutes remaining and the Eels trying to score the match-winning try, Iongi once again burst through the line and looked certain to score. But once again it was Gray who was there to cut him down with a stunning legs tackle, with the help of Tallis Duncan. View this post on Instagram A post shared by South Sydney Rabbitohs (@ssfcrabbitohs) Latrell Mitchell could be forced to switch permanently NRL fans were in awe of Gray's performance, with many saying it shows he should be the Rabbitohs' permanent fullback. Wayne Bennett usually prefers Mitchell in the No.1 jersey, but Gray was received plenty of playing time in 2025 due to injuries for Latrell. Mitchell made his return from a quad injury in the centres last week, before a pinched nerve in his back ruled him out of the Eels game. Bennett will be hard-pressed taking the fullback role off Gray even when Mitchell is back to full fitness. RELATED: Family first as Cameron Smith makes major career decision Brutal call made on Cherry-Evans before 350th game in NRL Leading commentator Andrew Voss wrote on social media on Sunday: "Not expecting Jye Gray to receive one of the existing awards at the Dally M's this year, but can we come up with one? Wouldn't be too many more admired players for 100% effort in the NRL." Voss pointed out that Gray will be a prime target for the new Perth Bears side once they enter the competition in 2027. If the Rabbitohs want to hold onto him, they might need to ask Mitchell to make a permanent switch to centre - where he's shined for NSW and Australia. Tellingly, a poll of over 50,000 Yahoo readers show the overwhelming majority believe Mitchell should be playing centre for Souths. The Rabbitohs have now won six out of 13 games this year when Gray starts at fullback, compared to two out of seven with Mitchell in the No.1 jumper. 'I just think Jye Gray, in that particular side, is the energiser bunny. I think he is a first-grader and his only position is fullback," Voss said on SEN radio. Social media is awash with calls from Rabbitohs fans for Mitchell to be shifted to centre permanently. Fans were blown away by Gray's display on Saturday night, and many believe Bennett has to keep him at fullback long-term. Jye just continues to amaze week in week out. Two of the best try saving tackles to finish the game a few nights ago. — oneonethreeinvesting (@113investing) August 17, 2025 I said at the start of the season Jye Gray Fullback. Latrell centre. — yoelmonaro (@yoelmonaro) August 16, 2025 South's fans, Latrell needs to find another position. Jye Gray is your fullback. Outstanding game from him tonight! — Duane Dowell (@DuaneDowell) August 16, 2025 You cannot move Jye Gray from fullback. Such an energiser bunny, and the threat Latrell can create at left centre is too good to refuse #NRLSouthsEels — Jay Keegan (@JayMK1994) August 16, 2025 Man jye gray is good. To think there was a time he was dropped so they could play Latrell there. — Emily (@Emilyrenee_13) August 16, 2025
