Victory against Chimaev is no different to any of my preceding victories, says Du Plessis

Dricus du Plessis aims to prove his status as the Greatest Of All Time in the UFC Middleweight division as he faces Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319. | AFP The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) middleweight champion, Dricus du Plessis, emphasised that beating the number three-ranked middleweight fighter Khamzat Chimaev will carry the same weight as beating any of his opponents in the UFC thus far, despite Chimaev being highly rated. Du Plessis will face Chimaev at UFC 319 in Chicago in the early hours on Sunday morning (South African time), a fighter that many consider to be "The boogeyman" of the UFC. Because of the dominant nature of the majority of Chimaev's victories in the UFC, coupled with his unbeaten record in his career, many fighters fear him, making him one of the highly rated fighters that the South African has faced in his career. However, despite all the aforementioned reasons, Du Plessis made it clear that beating Chimaev does not carry any more weight than beating Israel Adesanya, Sean Strickland or any of his opponents in the UFC. The trash talk king added that Chimaev has been respectful to him, a feat that contributed in the lack of trash talk or banter in the pre-fight press conference on Friday. "This will mean for me exactly what it meant to beat every other guy before this. It's not about the opponent, it's not about who I face, it's about defending this belt every time somebody steps up to try and take it from me. That's all that matters to me," said Du Plessis. "This is the first time meeting him this week. I don't know the man. He seems respectful up until now, that's why there's no trash talk."

Unstoppable style: Giovanna Barbosa transforms football discipline into fashion power

From Coventry City FC's pitches to the global fashion scene, Giovanna Barbosa blends athletic discipline, legal smarts and creative flair into a boundary-breaking career. From the disciplined pitches of Coventry City FC to the high-gloss world of international fashion, Barbosa has fused athletic precision, legal acumen and creative daring into a career that defies convention. South African-born Giovanna Barbosa doesn't just break moulds - she reinvents them. As the visionary behind the bold 'Miss Unforgettable' campaign, she's proving that presence, authenticity and fearless storytelling aren't just qualities for the runway - they're a way of life. Barbosa is an international fashion model and creative director, celebrated for merging high-concept visuals with emotional storytelling. Her editorial work challenges traditional norms of beauty and femininity, crafting campaigns that prioritise authenticity, power and aesthetic depth. Yet, her journey to the creative spotlight was far from linear. Before fashion became her stage, Barbosa was a professional footballer for Coventry City FC. 'Football taught me discipline, resilience and the value of teamwork - qualities that are invaluable in modelling and creative work,' she explained. 'It also taught me to perform under pressure, to read situations quickly and to adapt. On a shoot or when directing a campaign, every second counts - just like on the field.' Transitioning from football to fashion and creative direction stemmed from a lifelong affinity for aesthetics. 'Even as a child, I was drawn to self-expression,' Barbosa said. 'After football, I wanted a career that allowed me to combine creativity, storytelling and impact. Modelling and creative direction gave me the freedom to explore those passions while challenging myself in entirely new ways.' Her academic background in law also informs her creative process. 'Studying law sharpened my analytical skills and attention to detail,' she noted. 'From contracts to project execution, I learned how to balance creative vision with practical implementation. Creativity without structure doesn't last.'

SA man on cross-carrying mission to Israel

Motorists driving on the N14 in the Muldersdrift area yesterday (August 14), might have seen a man walking with a South African flag and a large cross. This man, Reini Coetzee, is on a mission to walk from Signal Hill in Cape Town all the way to Jerusalem, Israel. Tomorrow, August 16, he will have been on the road for five months after he kicked off his journey on March 16. 'I have walked 1 469km so far, however, this is not my first walk. I have undertaken two previous walks, the first in 2020 from Cape Town to Musina, and the second in 2023 from Cape Town to Namibia,' he said. He added he has had a great experience so far. He will pass through Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Sudan, and Egypt before reaching his final destination in Jerusalem. But why is he doing this? 'I'm doing it in support of Israel. The cross I am carrying is a message and a symbol of hope for South Africa. I'm praying for our nation, our continent and to expand the kingdom of God,' he explained. He was escorted by a local security company supporting his cause. Guardmax Protection Services' director, Jan Venter, called him a true Samaritan.
