China swimmers dope-tested most ahead of World Aquatics Championships
From Jan. 1, Chinese swimmers had an average of 8.8 anti-doping tests versus those from the U.S. who were tested 4.1 times and those from Britain who were tested 2.2 times, the report showed.
Swimmers competing as neutrals — mainly those with Russian nationality — were tested 8.2 times on average.
In total, the Aquatics Integrity Unit conducted 4,018 anti-doping tests on athletes participating in the Singapore event scheduled for July 11 to 22.
"The report underscores World Aquatics unwavering commitment to fair competition and the highest standards of integrity in aquatic sport," it said.
The China Swimming Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
China's swimming team has faced heightened scrutiny since revelations in April that 23 swimmers had tested positive for a banned heart medication in 2021 but were permitted to compete in the Tokyo Olympics that year.
The World Anti-Doping Agency accepted the findings of a Chinese investigation that the results were due to contamination from a hotel kitchen. An independent review backed WADA's handling of the case.
Testing will remain in force until the end of the event, with 830 samples to be collected during 24 days of competition, the Aquatics Integrity Unit said.
China's male freestyle sprinter Wang Haoyu was tested 13 times, while 200 meter breaststroke world record holder Qin Haiyang was tested 12 times, the report showed.

LA28 basketball to start two days before opening ceremony
Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will begin two days before the opening ceremony takes place on July 14, the sport's governing body FIBA said on Wednesday. "This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than 12:00 PM, enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters," FIBA said after a meeting of its Executive Committee. According to a preliminary version of the competition schedule released by organizers of the 2028 Olympics last month, the basketball medal matches will be held on July 29 and 30. The basketball competition will take place at the Inglewood Dome, with the United States looking to defend their men's and women's titles. The 3x3 basketball competition is scheduled to start after the opening ceremony. A number of other sports like cricket, soccer, handball, field hockey and rugby sevens are also scheduled to begin before the opening ceremony.

Cowboys optimistic Micah Parsons will play Week 1 despite trade request
Dallas Cowboys first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer said he is confident Micah Parsons will take the field for a Week 1 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Rumors have swirled since the beginning of the month when the All-Pro edge rusher requested a trade, stating on social media that "I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys." Both sides remain in a stalemate as Parsons continues a hold-in. He has sat out all training camp practices while seeking a long-term extension to make him one of the NFL's highest-paid defensive players. However, the four-time Pro Bowler has attended team meetings and walkthroughs. "The business side of it is going to take care of itself," Schottenheimer said Wednesday. "I think at the end of the day, we feel like Micah's going to be out there when we line up against Philadelphia here in 15 days or whatever it is. "I feel good about that, yeah." Parsons, 26, is under contract with a fifth-year option that would pay him $24 million in 2025. In 63 games over four seasons with Dallas, the superstar pass rusher has 256 tackles (63 for loss), 112 quarterback hits, 52.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. He tallied 12 sacks, 43 tackles and two forced fumbles in 13 games last year. The Cowboys must finalize roster cuts down to 53 players by Tuesday, and the status of Parsons will affect other moves ahead of the team's meeting with the Super Bowl champions. "I feel good that Micah's going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles," Schottenheimer said, smiling. "All those things will play into things."

Olympic champion wrestler Steveson set for MMA debut
Olympic wrestling champion Gable Steveson will make his mixed martial arts debut next month, the latest turn in a winding career path that has seen the American compete in pro wrestling and sign for an NFL team. Steveson, who won a gold medal in the super heavyweight category at the Tokyo Olympics four years ago, will fight in a Legacy Fighting Alliance (LFA) event on Sep. 12 in a heavyweight bout with Braden Peterson in Minnesota. A number of Olympic wrestlers including Henry Cejudo and Daniel Cormier have successfully made the shift into MMA, in which grappling is a key component. "The ultimate goal for me is to be the best of the best," Steveson told LFA in an interview on Wednesday. "You see guys like Jon Jones, you see Conor McGregor, you see Khamzat Chimaev, you see Daniel Cormier. You see guys that have come from a wrestling background that have made it big in this sport. "I want to be one of those guys too." The 25-year-old signed a contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) shortly after his triumph at the Tokyo Games, appearing several times on the company's programming before being released in 2024. A two-time heavyweight NCAA champion at the University of Minnesota, he was also signed by the NFL's Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent defensive tackle in May last year. He was released three months later after failing to make the cut for the team's 53-man roster.
