Wrexham opens next season against ex-Premier League side Southampton

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Wrexham will play relegated Premier League team Southampton in its opening game of the season.
Wrexham will begin its first campaign in 43 years in English soccer's second tier away at St Mary's on Aug. 9.
The Welsh team has enjoyed a spectacular rise under celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Just two years ago, Wrexham was playing non-league soccer in England's fifth tier.
After three straight promotions, it is one tier below the Premier League and faces a Southampton team that was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal last season.
The game will be screened live in the U.K., another sign of the growing interest in Wrexham.
Fixtures for the second-tier Championship were published on Thursday. Wrexham plays former Premier League champion Leicester on Sept. 30.
It plays Ipswich, also relegated from the top flight last season, on Nov. 22 and Sheffield United on Boxing Day.
Winnipeg Jets Game Days
On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop.
The Championship is renowned as one of the toughest divisions in soccer. That was illustrated last season when Luton — in the Premier League a year before — dropped down to the third tier after back-to-back relegations.

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn signs a 1-year deal to stay with his only NHL team

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has signed a one-year contract to stay with the only team he has played for in his 16 NHL seasons. 'Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,' general manager Jim Nill said Thursday. The deal has a base salary of $1 million, plus an additional $3 million in potential performance bonuses. This past season was the end of Benn's $76 million, eight-year contract extension. 'There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season,' Nill said. 'We are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.' Hall of Fame center Mike Modano is the only player in franchise history with more than Benn's 1,192 regular-season games, 399 goals and 956 points. He has played in 120 postseason games. Benn, who turns 36 on July 18, had 16 goals and 33 assists in 80 regular-season games. It was the 13th time in his career to be over 40 points in a season, though he had only one goal and two assists in Dallas' 18 postseason games. The Stars have been to the Western Conference final three seasons in a row but haven't been to the Stanley Cup Final since 2020. Their only Stanley Cup title was in 1999. Ilia Topuria seeks to join elite UFC company when he meets Charles Oliveira for lightweight title

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria will enter the octagon for potentially the biggest fight of his career on Saturday, when he faces former lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira for the vacant UFC lightweight championship. Just don't tell him that. 'I don't know what to tell you, it feels exactly the same to be honest,' Topuria said with a coy smile during Wednesday's media availability. Topuria (16-0) moves up to the 155-pound weight class for UFC 317 following a successful 2024 at featherweight. He claimed that belt with a second-round knockout of Alexander Volkanovski and defended his title by finishing Max Holloway in the third round of their October bout in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The 28-year-old dual citizen of Georgia and Spain, ranked fourth on UFC's pound-for-pound list, now moves up a division hungry to win another belt and join nine others who have held a UFC belt in two weight classes. 'I think that I am a better fighter right now,' Topuria said. 'More mature, more experienced. You're going to see, for sure, a better version of myself. 'When I was fighting in the featherweight division at this point, I was feeling really, really bad. I think I made a great decision. This is one of the best training camps that I've ever had.' Topuria, who is heavily favored with -550 odds at BetMGM Sportsbook, has registered eight wins by submission, including six by knockout, and has nine first-round finishes to his credit. Oliveira (35-10) will also be searching for history, as he looks to become the first fighter to win the lightweight belt on separate occasions. Last year, he lost a tough-luck decision to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 300 before bouncing back with a decision win over Michael Chandler at UFC 309 in New York City. The victory moved him into a three-way tie with Donald Cerrone and Andrei Arlovski for the second-most wins in UFC history. Oliveira, who has the most finishes in UFC history, has scored 21 victories by submission, including 10 via knockout. Despite his longevity in the sport, the 35-year-old Brazilian said he hasn't changed his approach. 'A guy that continues to be thirsty, a guy who is hungry for the win,' said Oliveira, the No. 2-ranked UFC lightweight contender. 'Yeah, he is younger, comes in undefeated. But does he want it more than I do, does he have more hunger and more thirst than I have? 'This is for my legacy, this is for my history. I'm ready for this fight.' In the co-main event, flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja (29-5) and Kai Kara-France (25-11) will meet for a second time, nine years after their quarterfinal clash on the reality show 'The Ultimate Fighter.' Pantoja won the first meeting by unanimous decision. This time, the winner will leave the octagon with the flyweight belt. Pantoja, who carries a seven-fight win streak, won the title two years ago, beating Brandon Moreno by decision. Since then, the 35-year-old Brazilian has defended the title three times, most recently at UFC 310 in December against Kai Asakura. Kara-France, 32, is hoping to make the most of his second opportunity at a UFC title after falling short against Moreno when the two battled for the interim flyweight title at UFC 277. Kara-France, the fourth-ranked flyweight contender, has 12 wins by knockout and three by submission. ___ AP sports:

Buccaneers extend coach Todd Bowles, GM Jason Licht

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Buccaneers signed general manager Jason Licht and coach Todd Bowles to multi-year contract extensions on Thursday. Bucs owner and co-chairman Joel Glazer said in the team's announcement the two have been critical to the team's recent success. 'The winning culture they have established has us well positioned for the future,' Glazer said in a statement. 'The continuity and stability they provide will play a large role in our ability to compete for additional championships.' The team did not provide terms of the extensions. Bowles is coming off his third year as coach in which he led the Bucs to a fourth-straight NFC South title. He was promoted in 2022 after Bruce Arians stepped down following the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory. Bowles had previously served as the team's defensive coordinator for three seasons. His 27 regular-season victories are the franchise's second-best total through three seasons behind Arians. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'I am excited to continue working with Jason for years to come as we build on the success we've enjoyed and keep reaching for even bigger and better goals. My family loves Tampa and we're looking forward to delivering more great moments for our fans in the coming seasons,' Bowles said in a statement. 'I also appreciate the confidence that the Glazer Family has shown in my abilities to lead this football team. It is a responsibility I do not take lightly and am honored to have.' Licht is the fifth longest-tenured general manager in the league as he enters his 12th season. Along with drafting and re-signing key players in Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Tristan Wirfs, Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr., Licht played a significant role in the acquisition of Tom Brady. 'I am very grateful to the Glazer Family for the trust and belief they have shown in what we are doing here,' Licht said in a statement released by the team. 'I am also very excited to continue working alongside Todd well into the future as we continue our mission of finding and developing talented players and chasing additional championships for our fans.' ___ AP NFL:
