Why the Chrysler Building is an Art Deco icon

CNN28-04-2025

Though it only had the distinction of being the world's tallest building for 11 months, the Chrysler Building in midtown Manhattan has remained one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in the world — and a glimmering architectural icon of the Art Deco period, which celebrates its centennial on April 28.
The 1920s and 1930s gave rise to buildings such as Chicago's Tribune Tower and New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel that mixed materials and colors through the use of steel, glass, terracotta, stone and marble. This new modern style prized vertical designs that drew the eye upwards, decorative glass and metalwork with geometric and floral motifs, high-shine lacquered surfaces, and unique sculptural adornments — overall, a movement toward originality instead of references to the past.
'Until the 1920s, American architects tended to design their buildings with one eye looking over their left shoulder of Europe,' said Anthony W. Robins, a founding member and former vice president of The Art Deco Society of New York, in a phone call. Architectural styles in the US often followed revivals popular across the West, he noted, such as the Greek, Romanesque and Italian Renaissance revivals that fell in and out of favor.
But Art Deco didn't have a name for decades; in 1966, during renewed interest in the era, a group of curators named the style after the 'Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes,' which took place on April 28, 1925 in Paris and drew some 16 million visitors over seven months, forging a new period of architecture, design and decorative arts that influenced many parts of the world.
The 1,046-foot-tall Chrysler Building, completed in May of 1930, was the pinnacle of both the then-unnamed Art Deco period and the skyscraper boom that rapidly transformed New York City's skyline. It dethroned the Eiffel Tower as the world's tallest structure, and was only eclipsed by the Empire State Building before such lofty projects came to a halt as the global economy cratered during the Great Depression, Robins noted.
'(The Chrysler Building) and the Empire State Building were the culmination of this huge skyscraper race,' he said. 'They weren't the last to open up before the Depression put an end to it, but they were … the two that took the title of the 'world's tallest building.''
Designed by the architect William van Alen for the automotive magnate Walter P. Chrysler, who took over the project from the developer and politician William H. Reynolds, the tower features a steel frame and white and gray bricks that ascend skyward with three vertical columns of windows on each side, flanked by horizontal rows that appear like notches at each level. Climaxing with a cascade of curvilinear sunbursts at its peak, it tapers off to a gleaming 185-foot-tall spire — one that had to be secretly assembled and erected from the inside to deliver on its promise to become the world's new tallest building.
During construction, the Chrysler's superlative was at risk by a structure rising in tandem at 40 Wall Street. Though the New York Times reported in October 1929 that Paul Starrett, the downtown building's developer, denied competing for 'height supremacy,' the building plans had changed to accommodate additional floors. The press played up the rivalry over the course of a year, Robins noted, until Van Alen resolved it by having the spire covertly assembled from five parts on the 65th floor and quickly hoisted up in 90 minutes so that competitors would not know its final height until it was completed.
With the Empire State Building on the horizon, as well as plans for other supertalls that were never built — including the Noyes Building, a monumental, four-block wide, 1,600-foot-tall terracotta tower that, in New York's skyline, would have only fallen short of One World Trade Center today — the Chrysler Building was the symbol of a rapidly changing skyline.
'What next February's skyline will be like it would take a rash guesser to say,' the New York Times journalist H.I. Brock wrote in 1930 of the year ahead. 'But it will be different. July's skyline will be a new skyline, for that matter.'
What makes the Chrysler Building so striking can be attributed, in part, to the experimentation of the Art Deco period, with its variety of textures, colors and materials, including its use of Nirosta steel: a new type of rustproof stainless steel from Germany.
'The color in the metal — that extraordinary silvery glow of the Nirosta at the top — it just stands out. You get there when the sun hits it on a good day, and it knocks your socks off,' Robins said.
But one landmark piece of legislation also contributed to its visual appeal, Robin said. New York City's 1916 Zoning Resolution — the first citywide zoning code in the US to be established — included a requirement that large buildings taper off as they rise so as not to block the sun. Van Alen used the Chrysler Building's five step-like setbacks to vary the design at each level, including ornaments on each ledge. Steel eagle heads and sculptural pineapples can be spotted on different levels, as well as replicas of Chrysler's 1929 radiator hub caps — a tribute to innovation as well as a direct reference to the building's original owner.
'It's very common among Art Deco skyscrapers that the ornaments, aside from being ornamental, will… tell us who the building was built for and include the building itself in the ornament somewhere,' Robins said.
Those motifs continue inside, where the skyscraper's dramatic vertical entrances of polished black granite and recessed glass panels lead visitors into the red marble and yellow travertine lobby. On the ceiling, Edward Trumbull's monumental mural, 'Transport and Human Endeavor,' is dedicated to the human ingenuity and technology that created the building, with a depiction of the skyscraper itself included.
For all its favorable attention today, the Chrysler Building was completed to mixed reviews. Architecture critics considered the last-minute spire to be a stunt, according to the New York Times. In 1931, the acclaimed critic Lewis Mumford wrote: 'Heaven help the person who critically looks at this building without the help of distance and heavy mists. The ornamental treatment of the facade is a series of restless mistakes.'
The architectural tides also shifted drastically as the International Style architectural movement swiftly rose to prominence in the 1930s, prizing functionality in its blocky concrete forms with no decor — the antithesis of its predecessors. But with Art Deco's revival in the 1960s — along with its official name — as well as the skyscraper's designation as a federal and city landmark in 1976 and 1978, respectively, the Chrysler Building's renown grew with time.
That wasn't the case for its architect, however, as Van Alen's promising career dwindled, and he became mired in litigation with his client, Chrysler, over payment for the project. (The courts ultimately ruled in Val Alen's favor and he received his fee.)
'The Chrysler is the building in his life, and it was the last major building in his life,' Robins said.
Though the building was completed in 1930, it took until 1981 for Van Alen's full vision to be realized, when lighting technicians illuminated the skyscraper's crown for the first time according to the architect's original designs.
'There's no spire that looks anything like that,' Robins said. 'You're flying over Manhattan — that's the one that just catches your eye.'

Stephen Miller Melts Down as Musk Exits With His Wife and an Attack on Trump

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller spammed social media Tuesday night in a raging display of his unwavering support for President Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' as it faced increasing backlash from MAGA figures, including Elon Musk. The Trump loyalist went in hard to sell the 1,038-page document that passed the House by a single vote on May 22. Miller's comments came hours after former DOGE chief Musk attacked the mega-spending bill as the legislation moves to the Senate, labeling it a 'disgusting abomination.' The world's richest man also threatened to 'fire all politicians who betrayed the American people' at next year's midterm elections. 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore,' Musk wrote on X. Miller responded by calling Trump's bill 'the most essential piece of legislation... in generations' and 'the most MAGA bill ever passed by the House.' Miller pointedly described those on Trump's side of the argument as the president's 'closest allies.' It is unclear how much personal animus there is between Miller and Musk after the tech billionaire walked out on the administration, taking Miller's wife Katie with him. Katie Miller was hired by DOGE under the same 'special government employee' status as Musk, meaning that she was also time-limited to 130 days in office, but that has done little to quell unsubstantiated internet speculation about Musk and the Millers. She will now reportedly work for Musk full-time. Miller began his own barrage of posts on X, first by claiming Trump's bill would fund increased deportation. '[The bill] will increase by orders of magnitude the scope, scale, and speed of removing illegal and criminal aliens from the United States,' Miller wrote. 'For that reason alone, it's the most essential piece of legislation currently under consideration in the entire Western World, in generations.' 'Now or never,' the 39-year-old wrote in another post. Trump's bill is estimated to increase the budget deficit by approximately $600 billion in the next fiscal year. Miller tried to explain his take on the bill by breaking it down into three sections: 'The most significant border security and deportation effort' in history, a full 'extension and expansion' of Trump's tax cuts and finally cutting almost $2 trillion through 'the largest welcome reform in history.' 'Item 1 alone (border security + deportation),' Miller wrote, 'makes this the most important legislation for the conservative project in the history of the nation.' Critics of Trump's bill fear it would lead to millions of Americans losing health coverage by slashing Medicaid and introducing budget cuts to food assistance programs, with spending on border security and military programs increased. Some Republicans have also expressed fears about the rising cost of the bill, despite a deadline of July 4 to get the measure passed and signed into law. Miller's flurry of posts included him bragging that the bill 'was designed by President Trump and his allies in Congress to deliver on his core campaign pledges to voters and that is exactly what it does. This is the most MAGA bill ever passed by the House, and it's not even close.' 'The bill was designed by President Trump, his loyal aides, and his closest allies in Congress to deliver fully and enthusiastically on the explicit promises he made the American People,' he wrote in another post. Miller also called out GOP Kentucky senator Rand Paul, who told Fox Business his biggest objection to Trump's bill was the addition of '$5 trillion to the debt ceiling' over the next decade. 'Why doesn't Rand ever fight this hard to deport illegals?' Miller asked in a post. Miller clarified Trump's bill would not fund the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, or the Environmental Protection Agency. Experts have, however, warned the bill could ruin student loan borrowers and universities and will have an environmental impact through increased mining and logging of public lands to raise revenue. 'We could have never dreamed of a bill like this in 2017,' Miller posted on X. Miller's loyalty comes as other Republican senators have joined Musk in questioning the contents of Trump's bill. At least four are demanding changes, according to Reuters. They include Sen. Mike Lee and Sen. Ron Johnson. While Republicans have a 53-47 seat majority in the Senate, they cannot afford to lose support. Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene revealed she had not read a part of the bulky bill that would prevent states from regulating artificial intelligence systems for a decade. 'Full transparency, I did not know about this section on pages 278-279 of (the bill) that strips states of the right to make laws or regulate AI for 10 years,' Greene posted on X. 'I am adamantly OPPOSED to this and it is a violation of state rights and I would have voted NO if I had known this was in there.' California Republican Jack Kimble was also critical of the bill on Tuesday. He posted on X: 'Full transparency, I did not know that the big beautiful bill was a real budget and would be used to determine spending levels. It seems to me that this is something that should have been made known to those in the House of Representative[s].' When a follower told him 'you're supposed to read the bills before you vote on them' Kimble replied 'Yeah, my bad.' Ron Johnson also agreed with Musk's 'disgusting abomination' comments on the bill. Speaking to NewsNation's The Hill on Tuesday, Johnson said, 'He's telling the truth... that's all I'm doing, too.' 'The trajectory of deficits is up, and no matter what the 'big, beautiful bill' does, it does not address that long-term prospect, it does not bend the deficit curve down. It supports it going up.' White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was already aware of 'where Elon Musk stood on this bill' and that he would not be changing it. 'This is one, big, beautiful bill,' Leavitt said on Tuesday. 'And he's sticking to it.'

Store brands become retail's secret weapon against tariffs

Retailers are supercharging their store brands to boost sales and keep prices low in the face of rising tariff pressures. Why it matters: The popularity of private-label products could soar as tariffs threaten to drive national brand prices higher. "Private label is growing faster than mainstream retail and part of the reason is that consumers can save money by switching," GlobalData managing director Neil Saunders told Axios. "This has been happening for a long time and the trend might be accelerated if tariffs push up prices," Saunders said. The big picture: Store brands are no longer the generic knockoffs of the past. They are a "destination driver" for many retailers, Sally Lyons Wyatt, global executive vice president and chief industry adviser at Circana, told Axios. Private brand products cost 20% less than national brands, Lyons Wyatt said. The price gap between private label and national brands has grown by 38% since 2019, according to data firm Numerator's Private Label Perceptions report. Tariffs and store brands State of play: Store brands aren't immune to tariffs, but large retailers have more control to minimize the impact because they have better leverage to negotiate terms with suppliers and reduce production costs. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told Axios in April that the retailer has more "visibility and control over what happens" with its store brands. Retailers have been diversifying where their private brand products are manufactured and pushing for more American-made products. What they're saying: "Private brand will continue to be a way that we show great value to customers," McMillon said. Costco has been adding new products to its Kirkland Signature brand and seeing the brand's sales outpace the company's overall sales, CEO Ron Vachris said in a May 29 earnings call. "In times of consumer uncertainty, our Kirkland Signature brand is uniquely positioned to provide our members with great quality and great values," Vachris said. Aldi: "Nobody else is 90% private label" Zoom in: A poster child for the private brand is discount grocer Aldi, where 90% of products are store-owned brands. "Nobody else is 90% private label. If you have all these (national) brands, you're really at the mercy of what the brand says the cost is going to be," Scott Patton, Aldi's chief commercial officer, told Axios. "We get to control that. The private label is really our differentiator." Patton said just 4% of Aldi's assortment "is impacted by tariffs." "We do have some globally sourced items," Patton said, noting imported wines from Chile as an example. "So there are going to be some areas of the store that are subject to a tariff. That doesn't mean that we're going to take that tariff and pass it on the consumer." Summer savings: Aldi lowers prices The intrigue: Aldi announced Thursday that it is dropping prices on more than 400 products — nearly 25% of its in-store selection — to help consumers save this summer. Patton said the prices have dropped on products throughout the store, including produce, meats like baby back ribs and grass-fed ground beef, chips, breads, yogurt, frozen items and the retailer's prebiotic Popz soda. Consumers will see red price tags throughout the store to identify price drops. Yes, but: Two Aldi categories that have had price increases are chocolate and coffee, Patton said. Costco was "continuing to move more items to locally sourced production, which is allowing us to lower prices in those markets," CFO Gary Millerchip said last week.
