Father of Stephen Lawrence ‘very frustrated' at killer's parole hearing delay
David Norris was due to make a bid for freedom on Wednesday and Thursday, but the hearing was adjourned because unspecified information was not made available to the panel that is due to hear the case.
A lawyer for Stephen's father Neville Lawrence said the Government had failed to provide the details.
Guy Mitchell, from Hodge Jones and Allen, said: 'Dr Lawrence is understandably very frustrated by this last-minute delay to the hearing which was due to go ahead on Wednesday.
'We understand this is due to the Government failing to provide certain information to the Parole Board in time. Dr Lawrence is seeking a full explanation as to the reason for this failing.'
Norris was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years and three months in 2012 after he and Gary Dobson were convicted of murder in 2011 nearly 20 years after Stephen's racist killing.
A spokesperson for the Parole Board said: 'The hearing has had to be adjourned due to information directed by the panel not being made available for the case.
'Without all proper information, the panel cannot consider a parole review.
'The panel's priority must be to ensure the relevant information is available, so that they can thoroughly review the potential risks and ensure public protection.'
A new date will be set for the public hearing once the information has been provided.
Stephen was on his way to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks in Eltham, south-east London, in April 1993 when he was set upon and killed by a gang of five or six attackers who used a racist term before they struck.
Incompetence and allegations of corruption, centred around Norris's drug dealer father Clifford Norris, dogged the investigation into Stephen's death for years.
There was also outrage when it emerged that undercover officers from the Metropolitan Police had spied on justice campaigners supporting the family.
In 1999 a public inquiry into the case found that the force was institutionally racist, a conclusion repeated by Baroness Casey in 2023 in her review following the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving officer.
Parole hearings are normally held in private but a public hearing was allowed in Norris's case after an application by the media that was backed by Stephen's parents.
In a document outlining the decision, it was revealed that Norris now accepts that he was present at the scene of the murder, but claims that he punched Stephen and was not the person who stabbed him.
The other suspects in the case were Jamie and Neil Acourt, who have since been convicted of unrelated drugs offences, and Luke Knight. A sixth suspect, Matthew White, died in 2021.
The College of Policing is leading a review of the most recent stage of the investigation into Stephen's death after Dobson and Norris were convicted.

Brockton man sentenced in death of homeless man, another charged with beating victim's dog
A Brockton man found guilty of fatally stabbing a homeless man who was walking his service dog in the city in 2021 was sentenced Friday, Aug. 1, to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office. A jury found Keith Disharoom, 44, guilty Tuesday, July 29, of one count of first-degree murder in the July 2021 stabbing death of 44-year-old Eric Cohen, formerly of Holbrook, the DA's office said. Cohen was walking his service dog, Righteous, on North Main Street when the incident occured. Disharoom was sentenced Friday in Plymouth Superior Court to serve the mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. 'I hope that after today's sentencing the family of Eric Cohen can find some measure of peace and comfort knowing that justice has been served,' Plymouth County DA Timothy J. Cruz said. What happened to service dog Righteous? Another man, Mark Stroud, 29, is accused of beating Cohen's service dog, Righteous, with a baseball bat during the altercation. Stroud is currently awaiting trial on charges of first-degree murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and animal cruelty, according to the DA's office. Righteous, who survived the attack, attended Disharoom's initial arraignment in 2021 along with Cohen's family and close friends. Righteous was believed to be with Cohen for emotional reasons, Joanne Berryman, a longtime friend of Cohen's told The Enterprise during the 2021 arraignment. More clashes and arrests at UK immigration protests
Further scuffles broke out at anti-immigration protests in the UK on Saturday, with police making several arrests. Demonstrators calling for mass "remigration" gathered in central Manchester, northwest England, for a march organised by the far-right "Britain First" group, which was confronted by anti-racism groups. Meanwhile in central London, rival demonstrators converged outside a hotel housing asylum seekers, following similar recent events that have occasionally turned violent. In Manchester, the two groups clashed briefly at the start of the protest before police split them up, according to an AFP journalist at the scene. "Send them back, don't let them in -- just stop them coming in, we've got hotels full of immigrants and we've got our own homeless people in the streets begging for food but nowhere to live," said protestor Brendan O'Reilly, 66. Counter-protestor Judy, a 60-year-old retired nurse, told AFP she was there "because I don't want to see people full of hate on the streets of Manchester." "Do they want them all to go back or is it just people with brown skin? I suspect it's just people with brown skin that they want to re-migrate," she added. In London, similar clashes erupted outside a hotel in the Barbican neighbourhood before police intervened. Metropolitan Police wrote on X that officers had cleared a junction where counter-protesters had assembled in breach of the conditions in place. "There have been nine arrests so far, with seven for breaching Public Order Act conditions," added the force.
