150/1 Glorious Goodwood winner stings bookies as firms suffer 'big blow'

Qirat stole the Visit Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday after none of the other runners in the race could get to the pacemaker.
Supplemented for the Group 1 last week at a cost of £70,000, the Ralph Beckett-trained 150/1 outsider was a pacemaker for 1/3 favourite Field Of Gold.
However, the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line.
Despite Qirat's huge price, a number of punters collected on him, with William Hill reporting that 10% of all bets they took on the race being on the gelding.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: 'Like most, we were shocked to see Qirat steal the Sussex Stakes from the front, and it's cost us dearly.
'We're often happy to lay the rank outsiders in these big Group 1 contests, and often we're not punished, but this has been a big blow with around 10% of all bets placed being for the 150/1 winner. It will go down as one of the most expensive Sussex Stakes results in recent memory.'
Meanwhile, one Ladbrokes punter in England remarkably turned £50 into £7,550 after taking a chance on the plucky outsider.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: "Hardly anyone saw that result coming, but Qirat's Sussex Stakes upset left one punter in particular £7.5k better off in one of the biggest shocks we've seen at Glorious Goodwood."

McCoy tells of sadness as racecourse he rode first winner at announces closure

Irish racing was dealt a seismic blow with the shock announcement on Friday morning that Thurles racecourse would close with immediate effect. Cheltenham Gold Cup winners Don Cossack and Sizing John both won at the track, as did dual Ryanair Chase victor Allaho. Thurles also provided Rachael Blackmore with her first ever winner, as it did AP McCoy. 'Thurles will always be a special place for me," said William Hill ambassador McCoy. "It's where I rode my first winner back in 1992 aboard Legal Steps, a second-string of Jim Bolger's, riding against the likes of Christy Roche and Mick Kinane. It's sad that it's closing, because I always used to think it was 'the only all-weather track in Ireland', because they'd race there no matter what the weather was like! 'It's very sad to see any racecourse closing, and it's just a sad day. You've had plenty of good horses winning there over the years, and the likes of Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott were never afraid to send their best horses to the track. You obviously had Don Cossack, Allaho, and Sizing John win there over the years, and that's just a testament to the place. 'Rachael Blackmore rode her first winner there too, and it was one of my favourite tracks in Ireland due to having ridden my first winner there. It's a loss to Irish racing and it's never good to see a track close.' Willie Mullins recorded more than 250 winners at the venue and told of his shock at the immediate closure. He told the PA news agency: "It was a major shock this morning to hear the news. It will be a huge blow for Irish racing, more specifically Irish jump racing and winter jump racing. "Thurles is a track that always had beautiful ground in the winter when other tracks couldn't. "It's the last family-run track in Ireland, I believe. Pierce Molony ran it for years, his father ran it before him and Riona and family have run it since Pierce died and they've been fantastic for the Irish jump fraternity over the years."

Field Of Gold found to be lame after Sussex Stakes loss

Plans are on ice for Field Of Gold after the Classic and Royal Ascot hero was discovered to be lame following his below-par display in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. John and Thady Gosden's star three-year-old was sent off the 1-3 favourite to emulate his sire Kingman and thrive against his elders on the Sussex Downs, but could only finish fourth as his Juddmonte-owned pacemaker Qirat caused a seismic shock at 150-1. The Clarehaven training team suggested the "engine wasn't there" in the immediate aftermath of the contest and now a potential reason for his disappointing performance could have been found. "We don't have the full picture yet, but he is lame on his left-hind," Barry Mahon, European racing manager for Juddmonte, said. "John called me this morning at 7am and said he was 'off' behind with a bit of swelling in his leg and the vet is due out to see him later today so until we have the full picture we can't fully diagnose it. "But the fact he is lame suggests that could potentially be why we didn't see the true horse that we know yesterday. We just have to sit tight now until the vet can run through all the tests he can run through." With the severity of Field Of Gold's setback still to be determined, it is unknown at this stage when one of the standout performers of the 2025 season will be next seen in competitive action. Mahon continued: "Plans are on ice and the thing with these things is, it might be a week before anything will show up on an X-ray or whatever, so it's not something you will have an answer for straight away. "But the fact the horse is lame indicates there is an issue and we have to address that. What that is and whether it will be a short fix or a long fix, we just don't know at this stage." Despite Field Of Gold's surprise reversal, there was still plenty of joy for the Juddmonte team with Ralph Beckett's Qirat stealing the spotlight, with Mahon reflecting on a race of contrasting fortunes. He added: "It was disappointing from a Field Of Gold point of view, but from a Juddmonte point of view the winner is a home bred and won it in good style and there has to be some satisfaction in that. "As someone said to me yesterday, it was bittersweet but there was still plenty of sweet."
