Upendra: My son Aayush got his debut purely on merit
21-year-old Aayush is stepping into the film industry, a world deeply familiar to him, since he is the son of Upendra and Priyanka Upendra, two stalwarts of Kannada cinema.
Aayush is set to make his debut in a film produced by Abhishek Sirivantha and directed by Purushotham, known for helming the Yash-starrer Modala Sala (2010). But unlike typical star-kid launches, this film began rather quietly without much fanfare, with a simple script pooja. 'We wanted it to be simple, much like how life should be,' says Upendra.
Upendra expressed his happiness about how Aayush doesn't just want to ride on his lineage but chart his own course. 'All I want is for my children to be happy,' Upendra shares, adding, 'Even if Aayush chose not to work at all and found peace in that, I'd support it. This career is his choice entirely.'
Joining him behind the scenes is his sister, Aishwarya, stepping in as an assistant director. From scripting to editing, she's immersing herself in the creative process. 'It's like an internship,' says Upendra. 'She's exploring what storytelling means to her.'
Upendra points out that more than just the debuts of his children, the crew's bonding makes it all the more special. 'Producer Abhishek, director Purushotham, and cinematographer Venu—they're people I know well. Venu is like family. And with Aayush and Aishwarya on board, it's even more special.'
Asked if he ever considered directing his son's first film, Upendra quips, 'No. I've never believed in planning too much. If something has to happen, it will. I came into this industry without expectations—just a desire to do something meaningful and give back to society. Aayush was chosen purely on his merit. The director saw something in him and approached him directly. He's entering on his own.'
'Every individual has their own journey. Mine was unplanned and unconventional. I hope the same freedom guides Aayush and Aishwarya,' says Upendra.

KSP moves Karnataka HC seeking intervention in plea filed against relief of 'Thug Life'
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce has resolved to ban the release and distribution of Thug Life in Karnataka as actor Kamal Haasan refused to tender an apology over his controversial statement that Kannada was born out of Tamil. Questioning this decision, Raajkamal Films International, for which Kamal Haasan is one of the directors, moved the HC. In its impleading application filed to this petition, KSP contended that the statement in question amounts to intentional or reckless speech that denigrates the dignity of the Kannada language and added that so far, the actor has not made any bonafide effort to tender an apology over his remarks. The KSP has also opposed the prayer made by the petitioner for police protection to release a movie in Karnataka, saying that police resources are not meant to provide protection to a commercial interest. The KSP is approaching the court in the public interest to seek permission to intervene in the petition and to place on record relevant constitutional, linguistic and cultural issues arising from recent events that have caused public unrest and hurt to the sentiments of the Kannada-speaking community.

‘Thug Life' day 1 box office collection: Kamal Haasan's film collects ₹17 crores on opening day
Ace filmmaker Mani Ratnam's much-anticipated Tamil film Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, collected ₹17 crores on its opening day, June 5, at the Indian box office. The film arrived in theatres with sky-high expectations, especially since it marked a reunion between Mani and Kamal after 38 years. However, the opening figure falls short of even Kamal's previous film, the widely panned Indian 2, which opened to ₹25.2 crores, according to Sacnilk. That Thug Life hasn't been released in Karnataka following the controversy surrounding Kamal's remark on Kannada is a major factor for the drop in the collections. For comparison, Indian 2 had raked in ₹3.45 crores on the opening day in Karnataka. According to Sacnilk, the Tamil version of the film saw its highest occupancy in Pondicherry, with 70.25 per cent, followed by Chennai with 69.25 per cent. Thug Life, one of the biggest Tamil films of the year, reunites Kamal and Mani Ratnam after the iconic Nayakan (1987). With music scored by A.R. Rahman, the gangster drama also stars Silambarasan T.R. in a pivotal role alongside Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Bhagavathi Perumal, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra and Ali Fazal among others. The film is produced by Kamal's Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies. The Hindu's review of the film read, 'A 163-minute chronicle of an elderly gangster's tryst with love, destiny, guilt and death, Thug Life is a gangster crime drama with stretches so generic and cold that you might wonder if it was really the filmmaker at the helm.'
