Bursa Malaysia opens flat in cautious trade
At 9.15 am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) eased 3.22 points to 1,522.64 from last Friday's close of 1,525.86. The benchmark index was 0.60 of a point better at 1,526.46 at the opening bell.
Turnover stood at 266.08 million shares worth RM171.57 million.
Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said Wall Street closed lower last Friday as US markets took a breather following a decent performance for the week.
"Back home, the FBM KLCI maintained its stability to end positively (last week) amid continuous buying support by local institutions. For today, we expect bargain hunting to persist and expect the index to trend within the 1,520-1,530 range," he told Bernama.
Among the heavyweight counters, Maybank rose five sen to RM9.57, Public Bank and IHH lost one sen each to RM4.30 and RM6.56, respectively, while TNB and CIMB were both unchanged at RM13.78 and RM5.51.
Active counters were led by Nexg, which added one sen to 50.5 sen, followed by Pharmaniaga and Silver Ridge, both accumulating three sen to 18.5 sen and 23 sen respectively, while TWL was flat at 2.5 sen.
On the broader index board, the FBM Emas Index erased 32.39 points to 11,447.44, the FBMT 100 Index removed 31.72 points to 11,209.97, and the FBM Emas Shariah Index declined 56.33 points to 11,481.54.
The FBM 70 Index went down 82.02 points to 16,615.70, while the FBM ACE Index trimmed 18.82 points to 4,652.97.
By sector, the Financial Services Index put on 21.27 points to 17,376.11, the Energy Index edged down 0.73 of a point to 738.40, and the Plantation Index slipped 7.03 points to 7,434.86. The Industrial Products and Services Index shed 1.90 points to 153.48.

JOHOR BAHRU: Private employee Saiful Umar, 37, was among thousands caught off guard when around 100 Malaysian bus drivers operating to Singapore suddenly went on strike early this morning at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI). 'I was shocked, there was no information at all (on a strike),' he said. Another passenger, K. Ramesh, 40, called the situation 'ridiculous,' urging the bus company to resolve the issue swiftly. 'This affects our daily routine and careers,' he said. Bus driver Atoi, 35, confirmed about 100 drivers began striking at 5 am in protest. By evening, services resumed, with no further disruptions observed. Sarawak unity drives sustainable growth towards 2030 vision
KUCHING: The unity of Sarawak's diverse communities remains the cornerstone of the state's progress as it advances towards becoming a high-income and developed region by 2030, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Marking Sarawak Day 2025 under the theme 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), he emphasised the state's commitment to inclusive growth through the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing PCDS 2030 to ensure socio-economic prosperity for all,' he stated in a Facebook post by the Office of the Premier. The Premier also outlined key focus areas, including digital economy expansion, AI adoption, and sustainable environmental practices. Sectors like oil and gas, plantations, tourism, and modern agriculture will receive accelerated development to bolster economic resilience. Education remains a priority, with free higher education in selected fields at state-owned universities starting next year. 'This initiative allows students to focus on their studies while easing financial burdens on families,' he added. Pahang Gov't Aims To Expand Employment Opportunities, Attract More Investments
TEMERLOH, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Pahang government is committed to expanding the people's employment opportunities by attracting more investments to the state. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said they also welcome those born in Pahang but currently work elsewhere to return to work in the state, in line with the increasing investment received by Pahang. "We want to provide plenty of job opportunities so that they can return (to work) in Pahang. "I was told that those working elsewhere are willing to return to Pahang if there is an opportunity and if there are better offers,' he told a media conference after the Pahang state-level Asyura Carnival 1447 Hijrah at Surau Kampung Paya Laman, Lanchang here. The carnival, organised by the Pahang Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JAIP) in collaboration with other agencies, saw 33 teams taking part in the bubur asyura (asyura porridge) cooking competition to instil the spirit of gotong-royong as well as cultivate the culture of giving and sharing sustenance among the community. At the same time, the 46 haj pilgrims who received their offer letter late this year were presented with the Makmur Pahang Initiative in the form of RM760 cash each under the Baraqah Haji Pahang Programme. In addition, Wan Rosly said the state government has consistently expressed high commitment in efforts to increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and investment value in Pahang, which has reached RM4 billion as of June. Asked about the extraordinary appreciation to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim either tomorrow or Wednesday, Wan Rosdy hopes the good news will be enjoyed by people in all states, including Pahang.
