Bhubaneswar: Odisha police on Monday launched a statewide crackdown against criminals to ensure the Rath Yatra in Puri on June 27 passes off peacefully.
The operation, while primarily focused on Puri, would extend across the state to foil potential plans of outside criminals during the festival that will draw lakhs of tourists, including VIPs from the country and abroad.
"We directed DCPs of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, and SPs of all districts to launch the special anti-criminal drive from Sunday evening. They have been instructed to remain particularly vigilant about criminals from outside Puri and Odisha who might attempt to target the massive gathering," DGP Y B Khurania told TOI.
The DGP said the coordinated statewide crackdown aims to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all visitors during Rath Yatra.
"Safety and security of pilgrims is our utmost responsibility. State police headquarters will monitor the implementation of the enforcement drive, whose main objective is to help maintain peace, and law and order across the state in general and Puri in particular during the festival," Khurania said.
The security measures include intensified patrolling, verification drives in hotels, and monitoring of known criminal hideouts.

Special attention is being paid to areas surrounding the Jagannath Temple and Grand Road, where the main festival activities will take place.
Police officers said the operation involves multiple police units, including special task forces and intelligence teams. Police are also implementing advanced surveillance systems and deploying additional personnel to manage the arrival of domestic and international visitors.
Police sources said the special drive's focus is to prevent property offences like theft, burglary, robbery and snatching. All police stations have been asked to execute pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and arrest offenders on the run in several cases. Besides, police officers have been asked to secure bond of good conduct from habitual offenders, who would pledge not to indulge in any criminal activities during the festival.
The DGP highlighted that AI-enabled CCTV systems being installed throughout Puri would assist in crime prevention. While AI cameras were used during last year's Rath Yatra, this year's deployment is more extensive. "We are in the process of installing 300 advanced cameras equipped with AI technology for security, crowd control and traffic management," Khurania said.
SP (Puri) Vinit Agrawal said, "Given the possible participation of VIPs, including Union ministers and chief ministers of several NDA-ruled states, we are leaving no stone unturned in our security arrangements."

Two-time World Series champ takes bold stand against Donald Trump's immigration policy amid California protests

Kike Hernandez lashes out at Trump's 'violating' immigration stance (Getty Images) As protests continue to surge across California in response to the controversial immigration crackdowns, Los Angeles Dodgers veteran Kiké Hernández has stepped forward with a powerful message. In a heartfelt statement, the Puerto Rican-born baseball star criticized Donald Trump's handling of the situation, expressing solidarity with immigrant communities facing what he described as ongoing 'violation' and 'abuse.' Donald Trump's immigration crackdown blasted by MLB star as 'abuse' of power Over the past two weeks, Trump's administration has drawn heavy backlash for deploying masked federal agents across California, arresting and deporting individuals without due process. The sweeping arrests sparked an outpouring of protests statewide. Rather than de-escalating tensions, Trump doubled down by sending the National Guard—bypassing California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was neither informed nor consulted about the action. Among the many speaking out, Hernández has emerged as one of the first high-profile athletes to directly address the growing crisis. 'I may not be born and raised here, but this city adopted me as one of their own. I am so sad and enraged by everything that is happening in the country and in our city,' he shared. 'Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me, and shown me nothing but kindness and love. This is my second home.' His frustration didn't end there. In an unfiltered show of support for the immigrant community, he added, 'I cannot tolerate watching our community continue to be violated, attacked, abused, and torn apart. All people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, and their human rights. I stand with you #CityOfImmigrants.' Just two months earlier, Hernández and his teammates had visited the White House following their World Series win. That visit took a strange turn when Trump asked star pitcher Shohei Ohtani to pose with the Declaration of Independence—an odd moment that now feels more surreal given the tense political backdrop. Meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom didn't hold back when voicing concern over Trump's recent behavior. Speaking with FOX News, Newsom stated, 'He is not the same person that I dealt with just four years ago. He is incapable of even a train of thought. He's making things up and he's putting people lives at risk.' As tensions between California's leadership and the federal government escalate, Trump remains defiant. 'We made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California,' he declared. With the nation watching closely, voices like Hernández's are increasingly important in amplifying the concerns of communities that feel unheard and unprotected. Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Sonam Raghuvanshi declared mentally sound, crime scene recreation next

SHILLONG/INDORE: Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is in custody for the murder of her husband, Raja, was taken to Meghalaya Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences on Monday for a mental health assessment and was found mentally sound in a psychiatric examination, police sources said. In Indore, Sonam's brother Govind said he has been summoned for questioning by Shillong police. The couple from Indore were honeymooning in Sohra last month when Raja was murdered. Sonam and four other accused — all from outside Meghalaya — remain in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities plan to take the five suspects to Sohra on Tuesday to recreate the crime scene, police sources said. A local court had initially granted eight-day police remand on June 11 to facilitate further investigation. Police are likely to seek extension of custody. In Indore, over 2,200km away, the 'tehrvi' (13th-day death ritual) for Raja was held at his home on Monday, attended by only close family and relatives, including Govind. 'Shillong police have called me for questioning. They said I need to give a statement and sign it,' he said. Raja's other brother, Sachin, said that the family had prepared all of Raja's favourite dishes for the ritual, including gulab jamun, Manchurian, noodles, dal-chawal, dry fruits, bananas, and papaya. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo 'We are not organising it like a typical tehrvi for a natural death; only family members are participating,' Sachin added. The Raghuvanshi family continues to grapple with unanswered questions. 'The same question keeps coming to our minds: why did Sonam got her husband murdered just days after their wedding?' said Sachin, wondering if anyone apart from the five accused was also involved. The family has demanded a narco analysis test of all five accused.
