Which Club World Cup players are at risk of suspension?

New York Times7 hours ago

FIFA's expanded Club World Cup has reached the last-16 stage, with Chelsea and Palmeiras the first teams through to the quarter-finals.
Under FIFA's rules, yellow cards are only cleared after the quarter-finals and so any player already booked in the earlier matches will miss the quarter-final should they receive another booking in their last-16 tie. The same is true for the quarter-finals and semi-finals: if a player receives their second booking of the tournament in the last-eight stage, they would mean the semi-finals.

Furthermore, for any red cards, the player will miss the following match. So, if a player is sent off in the last 16, they will miss the quarters, and a red in the semis would mean missing the final on July 13.
From the first two last-16 ties, defender Gustavo Gomez of Palmeries was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the 1-0 win against Botafogo.
He will be suspended for the quarter-final against Chelsea, who will be without Moises Caicedo after picking up his second yellow of the tournament in their 4-1 win against Benfica.
With the remaining last-16 ties taking place in the coming days, we take a look at which players have already received one yellow card at the Club World Cup and could be at risk of suspension.

(AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell) MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Flamengo star Erick Pulgar was injured and carried off the field after a tackle in the first half of the round-of-16 match against Bayern Munich on Sunday. Pulgar suffered the lower-body injury on a play in which he fouled Bayern's Harry Kane late in the first half, though the exact injury wasn't immediately known. The tackle sparked a brief skirmish between players from both sides. Advertisement Pulgar received a yellow card for the foul and will miss the quarterfinals if Flamengo advances. The Brazilian club trailed Bayern 3-1 at the half. Pulgar was also credited with an own goal that put Bayern up 1-0 in the sixth minute when he headed a cross by Joshua Kimmich into his own net. ___ AP soccer:

Follow live as Bayern Munich face Flamengo in Miami with a place in the Club World Cup quarter-final on the line Getty Images Bayern Munich are leading Flamengo 4-2 at Hard Rock Stadium in the fourth last-16 tie of the Club World Cup. The Bundesliga champion struck early with an Erick Pulgar own goal and a deflected Harry Kane strike giving them a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes. Gerson hammered a strike past Manuel Neuer to halve the deficit but Leon Goretzka restored the two-goal advantage with a great strike of his own from distance. Flamengo came again in the second half, though, with Jorginho scoring a penalty after Michael Olise's handball. Once again, Bayern gave themselves a two-goal cushion with Kane finishing brilliantly in the73rd minute. European champions Paris Saint-Germain await the winner in the quarter-final after cruising past Inter Miami earlier. Getty Images 29' Flamengo 0-2 Bayern Munich The cooling break is over but we haven't resumed play just yet. Michael Oliver is having his radio pack looked at. Getty Images 25' Flamengo 0-2 Bayern Munich Laimer tries an optimistic shot from distance that misses by a wide margin. Afterward, Michael Oliver blows for a cooling break. The temperature is currently 87F (31C) in Miami with plenty of humidity too. Getty Images Flamengo's response to their nightmare start has been really impressive. They are working their way through the Bayern press and starting to cause real problems in the final third with their fluid movement. The worry they must keep buried at the back of their minds is that too much damage has already been done. The second Bayern goal was a good example of how improved Dayot Upamecano has been under Vincent Kompany. Previously, jumping up like that, instinctively into a tackle, would lead to calamity. He'd be too eager, too aggressive and it would cost him. Now, he times so many of those decisions well that that proactive defending has become a real strength of his game. Getty Images 22' Flamengo 0-2 Bayern Munich Flamengo string together a nice passing move to break out of Bayern's press, but after advancing into the final third the cross into the box isn't accurate enough to trouble the Germans' defence. A mighty block from Manuel Neuer. No goalkeeper in my lifetime has ever made more excellent saves look so consistently easy. Just a big paw and a swat away, as if it was nothing. Getty Images 15' Flamengo 0-2 Bayern Munich Flamengo's first chance of the match and Neuer comes up with a fantastic save! Luiz Araujo has a free shot at the back post but the German goalkeeper gets over well and blocks his effort with a very strong arm. To their credit, Flamengo have gotten over or through Bayern's first line a few times. But the cohesion in Bayern's midfield and defense to push up the moment the ball enters the middle third has been excellent. Getty Images Flamengo expected Bayern to press high but they have still been overwhelmed by the German giants' pressure in these opening minutes, and already face an uphill challenge to make this a competitive game. Pulgar flicked Kimmich's corner kick into his own net after goalkeeper Rossi had lost the ball by cannoning an attempted long kick into his body, and Kane's shot came directly from Upamecano dispossessing De Arrascaeta high up the pitch. It also caught a helpful deflection off the shin of Ortiz. Getty Images Bayern are into this tournament now. They have not been shy in sharing their desire to win it, and that ambition is showing. A good, quick start, and much more of a Bundesliga rhythm to their performance. Getty Images 10' Flamengo 0-2 Bayern Munich What a finish by Harry Kane! He collects the ball after Flamengo turn it over deep in their own territory, takes a touch and lashes it past Rossi at the near post. Getty Images 6' Flamengo 0-1 Bayern Munich Kimmich hits a half-volley with his laces from the edge of the box that wins Bayern another corner. Rossi just barely manages to punch the delivery away, giving the Germans a third corner. This time, Flamengo fail to deal with it and the ball winds up in the back of the net! Looks to be an own goal, with blame assigned to Erick Pulgar. 2' Flamengo 0-0 Bayern Munich Flamengo are intent on playing out from the back and immediately put themselves under pressure, conceding a corner. Kimmich's corner is punched away by Rossi before play is stopped because a balloon is on the pitch. Don't normally see play halted for something like that... Getty Images 1' Flamengo 0-0 Bayern Munich Bayern get the ball rolling and we're underway in Miami! Bayern are wearing their white away strip for this game, which feels fitting in light of the Brazilian boos that cascaded down on their players as they were introduced by the stadium announcer. Getty Images There is a strong feeling in Spain that Flamengo are the underdogs of the tournament and will eliminate Bayern. There is also a lot of hype around Filipe Luis, as fans of Atletico Madrid who are not happy with Diego Simeone want him as their club's next coach. Liam Twomey / The Athletic There are still plenty of empty seats at Hard Rock as kick-off approaches. It can be hard to distinguish the allegiance of those who are here just by looking since both teams play in red, but the noise in the stadium makes it clear that this will be a Flamengo home game. Brazilians are very well represented in Miami, and Flamengo is the most supported club in Brazil. Getty Images Bayern Munich are coming off a 1-0 defeat to Benfica in their last match of the group stage, though they rotated heavily for that match knowing that qualification for the round of 16 had already been guaranteed. Another letdown today, however, would be quite a rare occurrence for the German club. They have yet to lose back-to-back fixtures in all competitions under Vincent Kompany since he became coach in May 2024. Furthermore, Bayern have only failed to score in back-to-back matches in all competitions once in the past 10 years! That came against Bayer Leverkusen and Lazio in February 2024. Getty Images There are no big surprises in either team as Flamengo prepare to face Bayern Munich at Hard Rock Stadium. Jamal Musiala remains among the Bayern substitutes as he continues his recovery from a calf injury sustained in the group stage against Boca Juniors. Flamengo coach Filipe Luis would not be drawn on whether attacking midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta would be fit to start during yesterday's press conference, but the Uruguay international is indeed in his starting XI.

'Cost him the race': F1 driver facing the axe after incident with Oscar Piastri

Alpine driver Franco Colapinto is reportedly in danger of losing his spot on the F1 team, and a crazy incident involving Oscar Piastri in the Austrian Grand Prix won't do him any favours. Piastri finished second behind McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who cut the Aussie's lead in the championship to just 15 points. But it was nearly so much worse for Piastri, who came perilously close to not finishing the race when he was inadvertently forced off track by Colapinto on lap 55. Norris and Piastri were moving past the lapped Alpine driver, who moved out of the way for Norris but didn't appear to realise Piastri was also right there. Colapinto moved straight back into Piastri's path and forced the Aussie driver onto the grass, who managed to keep his composure and get back on track. Piastri narrowly avoided disaster, but the incident cost him precious ground on Norris and ruined his chances of overtaking his teammate late in the race. Piastri was then blocked by Colapinto's Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly on lap 57, and the Aussie driver was left fuming. He reportedly said on team radio: 'Alpine still manages to find a way to f*** me over all these years later." Piastri was referencing his controversial switch from Alpine to McLaren in 2022, when Alpine tried to block the move. F1 fans were left filthy with Colapinto's mistake, with many joking he's trying to take out as many Aussies as possible. The Argentine replaced Aussie driver Jack Doohan earlier this season, who was sacked after six races. But new reports have claimed Colapinto is also in the gun after failing to impress. 'Racing News 365' is reporting that Alpine are considering dumping Colapinto as well, with pressure intensifying after the incident with Piastri that could have caused massive embarrassment for the team had it affected the championship race even more. Alpine's plan was to give Colapinto five races to show what he's capable of, and those five races are now completed. The Argentine hasn't scored a single point, but neither did Doohan in his six races. Apline had seemingly backflipped on that plan and guaranteed Colapinto's immediate future, but their stance has reportedly now changed. According to 'Racing News 365': "Alpine has informed Colapinto and his management team that the Argentinian needed to start performing." Colapinto, who was hit with a five-second penalty during the race and one penalty point on his record afterwards, said: "I'm not really concerned. I think (team principal) Flavio Briatore has been very supportive and he has trust on the decision he's made. I, and the team as well, are focusing on improving the car. We looked a bit weak today, and we just need to take some steps forward. "The car has been a bit tricky for me to drive at the moment. It's not very consistent. It's quick, but it just didn't give me the confidence I needed to push in the high speed here. It was a tough weekend. Overall, we did some steps forward, but it felt like something didn't click." Colapinto cost Piastri the race. Without that lost second from being driven off the track, Piastri would be in DRS by lap 64 or 65 and at that point, anything could have happened. — AJ Ansari (@AJAnsariX) June 29, 2025 Colapinto trying to take out every Aussie in F1 — Ignition Australia (@Ignition_AU) June 29, 2025 Almost caused him to crash and take a deep hit in the WC — juvid (@JuvidX) June 29, 2025 It wasn't the only hairy moment for Piastri on Sunday, who locked up his wheels during a dual with Norris on lap 20. "It was a good battle. A bit on the edge at times and probably pushed the limits a bit far," he admitted afterwards. "But that's what we're here to do: try and race each other and try and fight for wins. And that's what we did today. It was close for me, but not quite enough." RELATED: Oscar Piastri cops official sanction over illegal act following crash F1 fans in frenzy over return of Daniel Ricciardo with Oscar Piastri It was almost a repeat of the drama that unfolded in Montreal two weeks ago, when Norris ran up the back of Piastri and failed to finish. Team principal Andrea Stella praised Piastri's immediate accountability after the incident on Sunday, saying: "As soon as he crossed the finish line, he opened the radio and he said, 'Sorry for the situation in corner four. My bad. I know what I have to do'. We have come out stronger and even more united."
