Which Club World Cup players are at risk of suspension?
FIFA's expanded Club World Cup has reached the last-16 stage, with Chelsea and Palmeiras the first teams through to the quarter-finals. Under FIFA's rules, yellow cards are only cleared after the quarter-finals and so any player already booked in the earlier matches will miss the quarter-final should they receive another booking in their last-16 tie. The same is true for the quarter-finals and semi-finals: if a player receives their second booking of the tournament in the last-eight stage, they would mean the semi-finals. Advertisement Furthermore, for any red cards, the player will miss the following match. So, if a player is sent off in the last 16, they will miss the quarters, and a red in the semis would mean missing the final on July 13. From the first two last-16 ties, defender Gustavo Gomez of Palmeries was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in the 1-0 win against Botafogo. He will be suspended for the quarter-final against Chelsea, who will be without Moises Caicedo after picking up his second yellow of the tournament in their 4-1 win against Benfica. With the remaining last-16 ties taking place in the coming days, we take a look at which players have already received one yellow card at the Club World Cup and could be at risk of suspension. PSG: Fabian Ruiz, Joao Neves, Marquinhos Inter Miami: Luis Suarez, Federico Redondo, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Tomas Aviles Flamengo: Erick Pulgar, Gonzalo Plata, Bruno Henrique, Gerson Bayern: Leon Goretzka Inter: Lautaro Martinez, Sebastiano Esposito, Denzel Dumfries, Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella, Carlos Augusto, Kristjan Asllani Fluminense: Rene, Nonato, Martinelli, Keno, Facundo Bernal, Jhon Arias City: Abdukodir Khusanov (Rico Lewis serves final game of three-match suspension for red card on matchday 1) Al Hilal: Mohammed Al-Qahtani, Ruben Neves, Renan Lodi, Kalidou Koulibaly, Moteb Al-Harbi Madrid: Vinicius Junior Juventus: Khephren Thuram, Weston McKennie, Pierre Kalulu, Federico Gatti, Francisco Conceicao, Andrea Cambiaso Dortmund: Felix Nmecha, Yan Couto, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ramy Bensebaini, Jobe Bellingham, Maximilian Beier Monterrey: Stefan Medina, Fidel Ambriz, Alfonso Alvarado, Erick Aguirre,

Estevao subbed, Paulinho strikes: Palmeiras edge Botafogo in Club World Cup
PHILADELPHIA, June 29 — Substitute Paulinho scored an extra-time winner to settle a Brazilian battle of attrition as Palmeiras edged Botafogo 1-0 yesterday to win through to the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The winger came on at the same time in the second half as Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira withdrew teenage sensation Estevao Willian, a move that appeared baffling at the time but ultimately proved inspired. The tie had reached the 100th minute when Paulinho collected a pass by Richard Rios on the right flank and was afforded the time and space to come inside into the box before slotting a low shot into the far corner. That sparked wild celebrations among the Palmeiras fans who made up the vast majority of the 33,657 crowd inside Lincoln Financial Field, and the side from Sao Paulo held on to win the last-16 showdown despite having captain Gustavo Gomez sent off late on. 'I am really happy. Luckily I managed to get the goal,' the former Bayer Leverkusen player, who has struggled with injury since signing for Palmeiras at the start of the year, told broadcaster DAZN. 'The coach is doing all he can to help me settle into the squad in this difficult time for me, because I had a serious injury which still causes me pain. 'There is no time to feel sorry for yourself in this competition. You have to make things happen and that is what I am doing.' Winners of the Copa Libertadores in 2020 and 2021, Palmeiras will now stay in Philadelphia for a last-eight tie next Friday against either Benfica or Chelsea, who meet later Saturday in Charlotte. They had been the more dangerous side throughout in this meeting of the top two in last year's Brazilian league, with almost all of the chances falling the way of the men in green. Rio de Janeiro side Botafogo pipped Palmeiras to the domestic title and also won the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history in 2024. They then lost their coach and several key players, but still managed to beat European champions Paris Saint-Germain during the group stage of the Club World Cup as they qualified for the knockout phase ahead of Atletico Madrid. Nevertheless Palmeiras were the more lively of the two teams in a game played in warm midday conditions in Philadelphia. Estevao taken off All eyes were on Estevao, the 18-year-old winger who will join Chelsea once the tournament is over and is seen as Brazil's next big thing. He found it hard to make an impact in what was for long spells a disappointing game pockmarked by moments of quality. Colombian midfielder Rios came close to scoring in first-half stoppage time with a thunderous shot from the edge of the box that was deflected onto the roof of the net. Estevao then came to life after the restart, forcing a good save from Botafogo goalkeeper John Victor and then putting the ball in the net only to be denied by an offside flag. There was surprise around the stadium when the starlet was taken off just after the hour alongside striker Vitor Roque, with Luighi and Paulinho sent into the attack. A Mauricio header from a Joaquin Piquerez cross was tipped over and Paulinho then blazed high from a good position as normal time ended goalless. Into the extra half-hour they went. A Rios pile-driver was parried behind before the goal finally arrived thanks to the once-capped Brazil winger who played in the Atletico Mineiro side beaten by Botafogo in last year's Libertadores final. The substitute was then promptly substituted, his job done for the day. Botafogo pushed for an equaliser that would have led to penalties, but could not find it even after Paraguayan centre-back Gomez walked for a second booking in the 116th minute for grappling off the ball with Alexander Barboza. — AFP

Paulinho's extra-time goal sends Palmeiras into Club World Cup quarters
PHILADELPHIA :Paulinho came off the bench to score a dramatic extra-time winner as Palmeiras edged out fellow Brazilians Botafogo 1-0 on Saturday to book their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. The match, played in Philadelphia's sweltering summer heat, remained goalless after 90 minutes of cagey and ill-tempered football. In the 100th minute, Paulinho delivered the decisive moment, cutting in from the right, dribbling past two defenders and firing a low angled shot into the bottom corner, beyond the reach of Botafogo keeper John. Botafogo pushed for an equaliser but failed to capitalise, even after Palmeiras were reduced to 10 men when Gustavo Gomez received a second yellow card for a tactical foul. Palmeiras held firm to secure their first win against bitter rivals Botafogo in nearly two years, and will next face Benfica or Chelsea on Friday in Philadelphia. It was a tense, compelling clash between familiar foes who have met in several significant games in recent years. Palmeiras overturned a three-goal deficit to beat Botafogo 4-3 in 2023, a result that derailed the Rio club's Brazilian league campaign. Botafogo responded by eliminating Palmeiras en route to their 2024 Copa Libertadores triumph and had since gone unbeaten against them in five consecutive matches until Saturday. The first half was a sluggish affair, with Palmeiras dominating possession but struggling to break down a deep-lying Botafogo defence. Teenage winger Estevao, bound for Chelsea in a 60 million- euro deal after the tournament, provided Palmeiras' only spark down the left flank. However, chances were few, and the first half saw just one shot on target, a fierce strike from Richard Rios that John superbly parried. Botafogo looked far from the side who inflicted a shock defeat on Champions League winners Paris St Germain last week, and Palmeiras dominated possession against the South American champions. Palmeiras returned with more urgency after the break, and Estevao tested John with a low shot from outside the box. Botafogo responded through Artur, whose curling strike was comfortably saved by Palmeiras keeper Weverton, but they kept struggling to create clearcut chances. Estevao had a goal ruled out for offside in the 50th minute before being substituted, a decision that proved pivotal as his replacement Paulinho came up with a deserved winner for Palmeiras.
