Zoe Ball returns to BBC Radio 2 with new Saturday show

RTÉ News03-05-2025

Radio presenter Zoe Ball has returned to BBC Radio 2, four-and-a-half months after she left her breakfast show on the station, jokingly declaring she is "back once again with the ill behaviour".
Ball previously left the station to "focus on family" and opened her new Saturday afternoon show with A Taste of Honey's Boogie Oogie Oogie.
Speaking at the start of the show, she said: "It's me - Ballette. Back once again with the ill behaviour.
"Should we kick off with this? Let's get this show on the road, seat belts off, doors to manual."
Ball's opening remark was taken from Renegade Master by DJ Wildchild, which was remixed by her ex-husband Norman Cook, who is best known as Fatboy Slim, in 1998.
As Booker T and the MGs' Green Onions played in the background, Ball went on to ask if she still needed to do time checks on the afternoon show or whether "everyone is just so relaxed and laid back that we don't even need those anymore".
She continued: "It's lovely to be back on a Saturday. This is where it all began for me, back in the day when I used to sweep up and make the teas. I used to do early mornings, and then I did the slot where Rylan (Clark) is."
"In fact, I said to producer Geoff with a g, I went, 'Well, I'll pop in then about two, alright? And then we'll run things through'. And he went, 'Halfway through your show, love. Might want to come in a bit earlier than that'.
"I made it. I made it thanks to Geoff with a g's daughter Emily, who made me a cake. It is absolutely magnificent, Emily.
"And, apparently, when Geoff with a g got home last night, she'd made one, wasn't happy with it, made another. She made three cakes.
"Emily, you're an absolute queen. Thank you very much indeed.
"See Nelly, my daughter, who was out at a rave on the beach last night - that's what you could be doing, clean living life - thank you very much."
When saying goodbye to her breakfast show in December 2024, Ball received messages from singer Kylie Minogue, England footballer Alessia Russo, and Doctor Who star David Tennant.
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills took over her slot in January 2025, and his previous weekday slot of 2pm to 4pm has been filled by Trevor Nelson.
Ball took a break from hosting The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show in the summer of 2024 before returning last September.
After making the decision to leave last November, she revealed she wakes up most days with "awful headaches" due to a health condition that causes pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles.
She said she had a temporomandibular (TMJ) joint disorder, which affects the movement of the jaw.
Ball was the BBC's highest-paid on-air female presenter in 2023/24 with a salary between £950,000 and £954,999.
The ranking saw her second on the list of top-earning talent behind Gary Lineker, according to the corporation's annual report published in July 2024.
She was previously married to musician and DJ Cook, and the pair have two children together: a son, Woody Fred Cook, born in 2000, and a daughter, Nelly May Lois Cook, who was born in 2010.
Ball was the first woman to present the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show solo when her co-host Kevin Greening left the show in 1998.
She departed the role in 2000 and went on to become the first permanent female breakfast show host at BBC Radio 2 almost 19 years later.
Ball will present her new BBC Radio 2 show from 1pm to 3pm on Saturdays.

Billie Piper appears to be new Doctor as Ncuti Gatwa leaves Doctor Who

Ncuti Gatwa has left Doctor Who and said he "loved every minute of it" as he is seen regenerating into Billie Piper in the season finale. Piper, 42, first appeared in the series as the companion to the ninth Doctor in 2005, playing Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston's Time Lord – and then again for the 10th Doctor played by David Tennant. Piper appeared to replace Gatwa, who leaves Doctor Who after two seasons in the science-fiction series, as she arrived on screen with the words "Oh, hello!". Piper said: "It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that Tardis one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see." Shortly after the finale aired, the actress shared a post on Instagram holding a rose with the caption that read: "A rose is a rose is a rose !!!" Born in Rwanda before moving to Scotland, Gatwa's time on the long-running science fiction programme came to an end as The Reality War episode brought this season to a close on Saturday. The two-part season finale saw the Doctor face the Rani in a battle to save the world after making the decision to save the life of one little girl. As he bid farewell to companion Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu, he said: "I hope you'll see me again, but not like this." Speaking about his decision to leave the series, Gatwa said: "You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. "This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. "I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor." The finale also saw Jodie Whittaker, the 13th doctor, make a guest appearance as Gatwa's Doctor appeared to be travelling through alternate universes. The credit at the end of the programme said: "Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper." Sex Education and Barbie star Gatwa has played the 15th Doctor since Scottish actor David Tennant bi-generated in 2023, after his version of the character was brought back to life as the 14th Doctor. Whittaker, the first woman to play the Time Lord, announced in July 2021 that she would depart after three series as the 13th Doctor. Russell T Davies, Doctor Who showrunner, said: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights. "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the Tardis, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!" Actress Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday – one of the companions to Gatwa's Doctor, shared a post on Instagram with photographs of the two together adding that the actor made the character "even more special". She wrote: "Nothing can put into words the experience we've shared. I am forever grateful to have been a part of it and watched you bloom into the fabulous Doctor the world has got to know and adore. "You have made this incredible character even more special with who you are and how good you wear clothes. "You're my forever friend and doctor and I'll be here cheering you on watching you on your further successes with every new companion you meet along the way. Thank you for taking me to the stars." Gatwa will soon star in the West End premiere of Born With Teeth, a play that re-imagines the relationship between rival playwrights Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare. Since Piper left the Whoniverse, she starred in the ITV series, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, and portrayed Newsnight producer Sam McAlister in Netflix's Scoop, which tells the behind-the-scenes story of Emily Maitlis's momentous interview with Britain's Duke of York.

Doctor Who fans hail return of Billie Piper and Jodie Whittaker

However, one viewer condemned Saturday's episode as 'EastEnders in space', criticising the plot and writing. In the finale, Ncuti Gatwa leaves Doctor Who and is seen regenerating into Piper, who first appeared in the series as the companion to the ninth Time Lord in 2005. Retired teacher Steve Hatcher, 66, of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, who runs Whoovers – a Doctor Who fan club – told the PA news agency: 'The question in the mind was, is it going to be a regeneration to a new Doctor, which it was, or is it just going to be a regeneration to black and an uncertain future? 'So I'm very relieved that they've found a new Doctor and she's a brilliant actor and I'm sure that'll be terrific, so Doctor Who continues, I would say, on the basis of that, it was a terrific episode. 'I think it gave us everything that we wanted to see from it, there was nothing left unexplained at the end of it apart from those things that don't need explaining because there's an inherent mystery to it all, but it was terrific, I enjoyed it a lot.' Mr Hatcher, who watched the episode with other fans at the Derby Quad cinema, said the regeneration was 'handled really nicely' and the overwhelming mood was positive. He went on: 'What a lovely surprise to see Jodie Whittaker come back as well tonight.' James Ashway, 27, from Bristol, who helps run the Doctor Who Appreciation Society's magazine, said: 'It was an episode which threw the kitchen sink in terms of returning characters, Jodie Whittaker and obviously now Billie Piper as well, as the new Doctor. 'I'm a bit speechless, to be honest, there's quite a lot of stuff to take in, but I think it was an interesting episode which pivoted in the middle to tell two different stories, one wrapping up the end of that season and obviously telling Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration as well, so very enjoyable.' However, Brendan Noble, 57, of Middlesbrough, a former English teacher who runs the Sense Sphere YouTube channel, said: 'I think we've just had what I would have called EastEnders in space. I am absolutely shocked, irritated, frustrated, people are contacting me now in absolute shock and horror at what's just happened. 'It's lazy writing, hodgepodge of exposition, escapism, nonsense, (Russell T Davies) was throwing every toy from the Doctor Who box at the telly, hoping that some of it would make sense in the way of entertaining you.' Mr Noble told PA it was a 'shame' that Gatwa 'never had any decent stories', calling it an 'absolute waste of a Doctor'.
