
New clues point to why colorectal cancer is rising in young people
In a study recently published in Nature, scientists unveiled a link between the rise in young colorectal cancers and a toxin called colibactin. For years, we've known that colibactin, produced by certain strains of bacteria like E. coli, can mutate our DNA and potentially cause colorectal cancer.

Colibactin is only one of the many known triggers for colorectal cancer. But what researchers recently discovered is that people with colorectal cancer who are under age 40 are far more likely to have colibactin-linked mutations in their tumors compared with older adults — more than 3.3 times more likely.
Here's where the plot really thickens.
Thirty to 40 percent of healthy adults have colibactin-producing bacteria in their microbiomes, the trillions of bacteria inside our gut that help with digestion and support the immune system. Only a fraction of those people will get colorectal cancer. So something else is reacting with colibactin and paving the way for cancer.
It turns out that X factor may be your childhood diet.
How fiber can protect our gut
In a separate study published in Nature Microbiology, researchers found that fiber may impact colibactin's role in the gut. They found that the guts of mice fed a low-fiber diet became colonized with higher numbers of colibactin-producing bacteria. Their colons also developed chronic low-grade inflammation, which accelerated colorectal tumor production.

But when scientists fed the mice a fermentable soluble fiber each day, their microbiomes transformed: That inflammation subsided, and they became resistant to colonization by colibactin-producing bacteria.
In other words, fiber prevented colibactin-producing bacteria from causing cancer.
This tracks well with data in human studies. With every 10 grams of fiber you eat each day — that's about the amount in a cup of beans — there's a 10 percent lower risk of colorectal cancer.
Colorectal cancer can take years to fully blossom, so the idea is that when these processes take hold in early childhood, cancer manifests at a younger and younger age. In fact, research has shown that colibactin can start setting the stage for cancer before we turn 10 years old.
This is why I tell my patients to eat a diversity of fiber-rich plants - and to make sure their children do the same.
A parent's role in shaping the microbiome
Our microbiome is most malleable during early childhood. It's heavily shaped by things like our mother's health, whether we were born by a cesarean or vaginal birth, our exposure to animals and, of course, our diets. For instance, a recent study in JAMA Network Open found that girls born via cesarean delivery had greater odds of developing colorectal cancer before age 50 compared with those delivered vaginally (for reasons that are still unclear, this does not appear to be the case for boys, but scientists speculate that this may be due to how sex hormones influence the microbiome). And the Nurses Health Study II revealed that for each serving of a sugary beverage - such as soft drinks or sports drinks - consumed daily in adolescence, participants had a 32 percent higher risk of developing colorectal cancer before age 50.

Childhood risk factors are notoriously difficult to study, and there are many remaining questions about how different factors - including the environment, chemical exposures in daily life and our mother's health - may influence the risk of colorectal cancer. But scientists are developing experiments to collect information and samples — like stool or blood — early in life and plan to track them into adulthood. Those will take time to give us answers, but it's a payoff we really need.
Many of my patients worry about how antibiotics might disrupt the microbiome. This isn't usually a concern for adults: Antibiotics might disrupt the microbiome temporarily, but it usually bounces back.
It's more complicated when antibiotics are given to people who are pregnant or babies because these affect a developing microbiome at a very impressionable time. However, antibiotics — in infancy or otherwise — have not been shown to 'cause' cancer in any study. While you shouldn't take antibiotics unnecessarily, you should use them if your doctor recommends them.
Lowering your risk of colorectal cancer
Besides increasing your overall fiber intake, here are three things you can do to reduce the risk for you and your family:
Make simple healthier food swaps: Sugar-sweetened beverages, processed and red meats, refined grains and
Trade out sedentary activity for physical activity: Small steps, like exercising a half hour each week instead of sitting on the couch, can build to a big impact. In one study of almost 90,000 female nurses, those who spent about two hours per day watching TV had a 69 percent increased risk of getting colorectal cancer at a young age compared with people who watched less than one hour of TV per day - even after controlling for factors like BMI, family history, smoking and diet.
Stay up-to-date on screenings: Colonoscopies are a great screening tool, but they also prevent colorectal cancer by removing polyps — small, abnormal growths — before they turn into cancer. If you're between the ages of 45 and 75, then you should be screened.
What I want my patients to know
It worries me that fewer than 20 percent of people ages 45-49 are up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening. The most common symptom of colorectal cancer among younger people is rectal bleeding. While blood in your poop can be due to any number of less worrisome causes such as hemorrhoids, which are incredibly common, it's never normal. If you see blood, inform your physician.

AI is finding its way into the public sector and its latest entry point is the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which announced yesterday that it had rolled out an agency-wide generative AI tool called Elsa. The FDA plans to use the AI system to locate high-priority inspection targets, generate code to create databases and summarize information for safety assessments and scientific reviews. Now let's get into the headlines. Meta, which generates 97% of its revenue by advertising on Facebook and Instagram, is developing AI tools that aim to help brands fully create and target ads, according to the Wall Street Journal. It's also planning to use AI to personalize ads by tweaking them for different users based on factors like location and budget. Chip giant Nvidia reported $44.1 billion in revenue for its latest quarter ending April 27, beating Wall Street forecasts. But the company's year over year earnings are ebbing, Forbes reported, in part thanks to an almost $50 billion hit after the Trump administration stopped it from exporting its H20 AI chips to China. Academic journals and scientific websites are being swamped by bots scraping hundreds of millions of documents and photographs to train generative AI models, according to Nature. The aggressive bot scraping activity has pushed some sites to the brink of closing their doors, both by skyrocketing costs thanks to overloading servers and slowing down site functions for legitimate users. Alex Ratner, CEO of Snorkel AI, remembers a time when data labeling —the grueling task of adding context to swathes of raw data and grading an AI model's response— was considered 'janitorial' work among AI researchers. But that quickly changed when ChatGPT stunned the world in 2022 and breathed new life (and billions of dollars) into a string of startups rushing to supply human-labeled data to the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic to train capable models. Now, the crowded field of data labelling appears to be undergoing another shift. Fewer companies are training large language models from scratch, leaving that task instead to the tech giants. Instead, they are fine-tuning models and building applications in areas like software development, healthcare and finance, creating demand for specialized data. AI chatbots no longer just write essays and haikus; they're being tasked with high stakes jobs like helping physicians make diagnoses or screening loan applications, and they're making more mistakes. Assessing a model's performance has become crucial for businesses to trust and ultimately adopt AI, Ratner said. 'Evaluation has become the new entry point,' he told Forbes. That urgency for measuring AI's abilities across very specific use cases has sparked a new direction for Snorkel AI, which is shifting gears to help enterprises create evaluation systems and datasets to test their AI models and adjust them accordingly. Data scientists and subject matter experts within an enterprise use Snorkel's software to curate and generate thousands of prompt and response pairs as examples of what a correct answer looks like to a query. The AI model is then evaluated according to that dataset, and trained on it to improve overall quality. The company has now raised $100 million in a Series D funding round led by New York-based VC firm Addition at a $1.3 billion valuation— a 30% increase from its $1 billion valuation in 2021. In what may have been among the most expensive acquisition announcements, OpenAI spent nearly $3 million to produce a 9-minute video of CEO Sam Altman and LoveFrom founder Jony Ive walking through the streets of San Francisco and discussing their ambitions to create a new device for interacting with ChatGPT, according to the San Francisco Standard. The AI model maker hired Oscar winning director Davis Guggenheim to film the video and obtained permits to shut down roadways in the city. The video was part of OpenAI's splashy announcement of its acquisition of Ive's hardware startup io in a $6.5 billion all-stock deal. Chatbots are sucking up to their users (even if that means giving them harmful advice) in order to keep them hooked on the technology, according to a new study, The Washington Post reported. In one scenario, an AI chatbot suggested a fictional recovering drug addict 'take a small hit of meth,' to stay focused. Tech giants and top AI companies like OpenAI, Meta and Google have recently released updates to make their AI models more personalized— learning more about the user from their chat history and internet activity and serving up content that best aligns with their preferences–in order to make it less tempting to start using a competitor's product.

'I want to live here' is the sentence I find myself saying over and over as I walk through the boutique hotel Eriro, nestled at an elevation of 1,500 meters among the peaks of the Zugspitze, Germany's largest mountain. Space, pace, and a fluid relationship to nature: These are the main motifs for this cozy nine-suite retreat surrounded by majestic mountains, lakes, and the dense pine forest of Seebenwald. It is not a coincidence that in ancient German the word eriro means 'forest entrance.' The chalet feels like a portal to a green aquatic world. All around, the presence of water is tangible. Down the hill from the hotel flows the Loisach river, which crosses an ancient mossland and separates Ehrwald and Lermoos. Up in the mountains above Eriro are the wonderful lakes Seebensee (Seeben Lake) and Drachensee (Dragon Lake). There is snow in the winter with skiing and in summer mountain bikes and hiking trails among the wildflowers. At the hotel the experience is visual, tactile, and sensorial: Wood, stone, wool, and glass are the dominant materials. Guests are encouraged to touch, smell, and engage with everything. This place feels like an actual dream home, a magical dwelling that is both familiar and wild. And the spa center certainly reflects this philosophy. Every bedroom comes equipped with a small wooden box, the place where phones go to die. Wi-Fi is present but not visible. The challenge is clear: Relaxation begins once we access our inner self, and this requires a true forfeiting of manic screen life. (Another great touch is each room's vinyl record player and collection.) The spa exemplifies Eriro's ethos of reconnecting to nature and disconnecting from the digital realm. It is situated on the bottom floor with all the larger suites, its architecture encouraging a grounding experience. (One of the guest rooms has a gorgeous, built-in sauna, and all the suites have bathtubs made from carved pine.) The floors are rough, the wood is only partly treated, and the water comes from a mountain spring collected from Eriro's own well. A feeling of freedom and fluidity runs through this very special place. The spa has no opening or closing hours. The hotel is a collaboration between hoteliers Amelie and Dominik Posch, Christina and Martin Spielmann, and South Tyrolean architect Martin Gruber, who decided to renovate a 1936 Alpine hut and transform it into a refuge for the soul and mind. (A nice touch: Most of the wood here is recycled from old barns or the inn's first 1930s incarnation.) The inn's original owner loved this place so much that he wanted to ensure it would be sold to people who would maintain its original spirit. This means there is no grand entrance, no driveway, no arrival procedure. The official entrance is actually through the back door. The minute you cross the threshold, you are immediately in the main room, which is a kind of spacious yet cozy living room with stunning views of the valley below. The main idea for the spa is to access as many outside elements as possible, so you would be remiss to skip the water therapy. There are three hot-water relaxation pools, and the water from the pools and showers is all filtered in-house, without chemicals or chlorine. In the summer, the grasslands are visible from the large pool windows, giving the impression that you're floating over a wild field of flowers. Along with the pools and sauna is a so-called straw room, inspired by the stables used to store straw and hay for animals in winter. Here you will find the only television of Eriro, screening exclusively produced footage of the surrounding mountain peaks and lakes. Deerskin swings and infrared vibrations help the relaxation process. My masseuse showed me a collection of mountain arnica, St. John's wort, and stinging nettle she picked herself. 'Everyone is so afraid of nettle,' she says. 'But it's one of the herbs with the greatest variety of benefits. It boosts immunity, controls inflammation, cures arthritis, and helps with diabetes.' The hotel purposefully chooses not to work with cosmetic brands, using local, natural products instead. An array of herbal teas—Alpine mix, chamomile, and mint—is served at all times; the herbs are collected in the summer and dried for the winter season. After the massage, I took a contemplative walk around a lake, followed by a breathing meditation on the water with a Tibetan bowl. Before reaching Eriro I made a pit stop at a sister property, an Alpine hideaway called La Posch in the gorgeous chalet village Biberwier—and you might want to extend your trip at Eriro to include this spot as well. The idea running through both La Posch and Eriro is that the spa should be a seamless experience. Who can go? Eriro is for adults only. Children under 16 are not permitted as guests. Because of its intimate, almost domestic feeling, the spa is also open exclusively for hotel guests. Reaching the chalet is a romantic adventure in itself, so guests must keep that in mind when venturing up.
