1,500 Palestinians lost their eyesight in Israeli genocide in Gaza - War on Gaza
Around 1,500 Palestinians have lost their eyesight in the besieged Gaza Strip due to the ongoing Israeli genocidal war, Palestinian medical officials said on Sunday.
They added that another 4,000 Palestinians are at risk of a similar fate.
Dr. Abdulsalam Sabah, director of the Eye Hospital in Gaza City, said in a press statement on Sunday that the health sector faces a severe shortage of essential medical equipment and surgical supplies related to eye care, leading to the collapse of ophthalmic surgical services in the Strip.
He noted that the hospital has only three reusable eye scissors, which are repeatedly used in ophthalmic surgeries, thus posing serious risks to patients' health and safety.
According to the hospital's director, the Eye Hospital in Gaza is on the verge of shutting down completely as essential medical equipment nears total depletion.
Moreover, Palestinian ophthalmologists indicated that the relentless Israeli bombardment has led to a near-total breakdown in medical services for cases involving retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and trauma-related internal bleeding.
Critical supplies such as hyaluronic acid and ultra-fine surgical sutures are nearly exhausted.
Many eye injuries caused by explosions urgently require these materials, and without them, treatment is impossible, Palestinian doctors said.
On 2 March, Israel blocked the entry of all lifesaving supplies, including food, medicine and fuel, plunging the territory of 2.3 million people into what is believed to be the worst humanitarian crisis since the war began.
Two weeks later, Israel shattered an eight-week-long ceasefire deal in Gaza by resuming deadly bombardment, killing at least 2,700 Palestinians since then.
In its latest update, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Sunday that 19 people were killed and 81 others wounded in Israeli strikes on Gaza over the past 24 hours.
The latest figures bring the total number of Palestinians killed by Israel since October 2023 to 52,829 people, mainly children and women, with 119,554 others wounded.

Gaza civil defence says 15 killed near aid centre - War on Gaza
The Gaza civil defence agency said that 15 people were killed Tuesday when Israeli forces fired at people trying to enter a food distribution centre, while Israel's military acknowledged firing "warning shots". There have been a series of deadly incidents since the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) first opened aid distribution points in the Palestinian territory on May 27, with Israel facing mounting international protests over humanitarian conditions. Gaza civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 12 people were killed when Israeli quadcopters opened fire on people waiting to enter a GHF distribution centre in central Gaza, "at 6 or 7 am" Tuesday. Bassal also said that between 2:30 am and 5 am on Tuesday, three people were killed by Israeli fire and shelling north of Wadi Gaza as they waited to enter the same distribution centre. "Several thousand civilians and hungry individuals had gathered in the hope of reaching the American aid centre near the Wadi Gaza bridge and the Netzarim corridor", Bassal told AFP. The Netzarim corridor is a strip of land militarised by Israel that bisects Gaza from the Israeli border to the Mediterranean and cuts off the north from the rest of the territory. Al-Awda hospital in central Gaza's Nuseirat camp said it had received three bodies and 100 wounded from the incident near the Wadi Gaza bridge. In light of restrictions imposed on media in the Gaza Strip and the difficulties of access on the ground, AFP is not able to independently verify the death tolls announced by the civil defence agency. WHO Chief Warns Al-Amal Hospital in Gaza ‘Virtually Non-Functional' Amid Intensified Hostilities
Ahmed Emam The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned on Monday that Al-Amal Hospital in Gaza is now "virtually out of service" due to escalating violence in its vicinity. In a post on the social media platform X, Dr. Tedros stated that intensified hostilities around the hospital have severely hindered access, 'preventing new patients from receiving care and leading to avoidable deaths.' "Patients remain inside the hospital in need of treatment," he added, "but it is no longer accepting new admissions." According to Dr. Tedros, two emergency medical teams — one local and one international — are still operating under dire conditions, doing their best to care for the remaining patients with extremely limited medical supplies. He further noted that with Al-Amal Hospital now incapacitated, Nasser Medical Complex has become the only facility in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, still operating an intensive care unit. On June 5, WHO had already raised alarms about both Nasser and Al-Amal hospitals being overwhelmed and functioning beyond their capacity, as the influx of casualties continues. Hospitals Face Shutdown Within 48 Hours Due to Fuel Shortages, Says Gaza's Health Min.
Ahmed Emam Hospitals in the Gaza Strip are on the verge of a complete shutdown within the next 48 hours due to a critical fuel shortage, the Palestinian Ministry of Health warned on Wednesday, raising alarms over the imminent collapse of the healthcare system. Dr. Khalil Al-Daqran, spokesperson for the ministry in Gaza, stated that the few remaining operational hospitals are struggling to function as fuel supplies dwindle. 'We are facing a total breakdown of the health sector,' he said, citing Israeli restrictions on fuel deliveries and aid access. According to Al-Daqran, fuel is not delivered directly to hospitals but is stored by United Nations agencies and then distributed under Israeli supervision. Currently, Israeli forces are reportedly blocking these organizations from reaching fuel storage locations, threatening the continuity of medical services across the territory. Of Gaza's 16 government hospitals, only five remain even partially operational, and just three — Al-Shifa, Al-Aqsa Martyrs, and Nasser hospitals — are still admitting patients. Even so, these facilities are functioning at minimal capacity. 'Al-Shifa is operating at less than 20% of its normal capacity due to the severe shortages of fuel, medications, and essential supplies,' Al-Daqran said. He also noted that Israel has blocked the entry of medical aid and medications for over 90 days, even during declared ceasefires. As a result, more than 80% of Gaza's healthcare infrastructure has collapsed. The pressure on medical staff has reached breaking point. Al-Daqran described a state of 'total exhaustion' among healthcare workers, who have been working nonstop for more than 20 months. Many are receiving only 8% of their salaries and continue to work under extreme hardship. 'Medical teams are operating under life-threatening conditions,' he said. 'Over 1,800 healthcare workers have been killed, and more than 3,000 have been injured since the beginning of the war.' He also claimed that Israeli forces have deliberately targeted specialized doctors and shut down multiple hospitals, causing a significant loss in medical expertise. Many doctors have not left their hospitals in months, choosing to stay with their patients despite limited food, supplies, and even basic meals. 'They left their families behind to keep saving lives,' Al-Daqran said, 'in one of the harshest and most dangerous healthcare environments in the world.'
