Jayasuriya decimates Bangladesh as Sri Lanka win by innings and 78 runs
Bangladesh lost six wickets within 33 runs as their batters were unable to repeat the heroics that secured a draw in the first test in Galle on Colombo's spin-friendly track.
"There was a difference between (the) two matches ... that's a good morale booster for us, losing the toss and putting the opposition under pressure," Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
After Bangladesh posted 247 in their first innings, opener Pathum Nissanka scored 158 in a player-of-the-match performance, aided by Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84) as Sri Lanka secured a commanding 211-run lead with a total of 458.
Anamul Haque (19) tried to give Bangladesh a fast start in the second innings but fell to Asitha Fernando (1-22), while his opening partner Shadam Islam (12) mistimed a cover drive and got caught just three balls later as Jayasuriya (5-56) took his first wicket of the match.
De Silva (2-13) trapped fellow skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored twin centuries in the first test, with a leg before wicket dismissal to leave the visitors reeling at 70-4.
"Very disappointing after how we finished the first Test, the way this one went," Shanto said. "We had opportunities but... always took easy options and made mistakes while batting."
Mushfiqur Rahim (26), Bangladesh's other centurion in the previous match, was the next to fall as he was bowled by Jayasuriya, kicking off a collapse where Bangladesh lost their last five wickets in less than 11 overs.
Sri Lanka will play three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 matches against Bangladesh next month, with the first ODI set for Wednesday. REUTERS

He doubled his tally in the 42nd minute, latching onto Sumi's lofted pass before coolly finishing into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. The Sailors' troubles deepened shortly after the restart when Kazama curled a free-kick into the top corner to stretch the lead to three. They eventually pulled one back in the 87th minute when Tsiy William Ndenge dispossessed Jacob Mahler and set up Leonard Thy, who rifled past Stags goalkeeper Nalawich Intachareon, with a virtual assistant referee (VAR) check confirming the goal after checking for a foul in the build-up. Twelve minutes of added time gave the Sailors a glimmer of hope, but just a minute into stoppage time Buhagiar punted a long ball to Hide Higashikawa, who outpaced Toni Datkovic before firing home to seal the win in front of 1,328 spectators. Akbar credited his players and his predecessor for laying the foundation for their first silverware in five years. He said: 'This is just one game – we should be happy, we should enjoy the victory, it's a sweet victory, but after that we have to regroup, reassess and focus on our upcoming season because we cannot let one victory define us.' For Buhagiar, who joined from Azerbaijan Premier League side Kapaz, the match was a chance for Tampines – who were runners-up last season – to send a strong signal of intent. He said: 'The Sailors might not have been at their best today but we showed up and showed everyone what we can do this season. We're ready to go out and fight in every game. 'It's more of a message from the team that we are ready for the season and we want to fight for every title we can. Personally it's good for me, but as a team it's more important to win trophies like this and compete at the highest level.' It was not the result that the Sailors, who had swept all domestic honours last season, had hoped for. In 2024/25, they also added the Singapore Cup and reached the Asian Football Confederation Champions League Two final, narrowly losing 2-1 to Sharjah FC of the United Arab Emirates. The Brazilian forward struck in the 10th minute, converting a cross from new recruit Mohammed Kudus, before the pair combined again on the hour mark for a spectacular second goal that showcased Richarlison's aerial prowess. Brennan Johnson added the third six minutes later but it was no meek surrender from the visitors, as they managed to take nearly as many shots as Tottenham without finding the net. Antoine Semenyo thankful for support as police arrest man on suspicion of racial abuse

Semenyo was targeted by a man in the crowd during the first half, with referee Anthony Taylor stopping play to address the incident. Taylor spoke to both managers and captains before play resumed. Merseyside Police said a 47-year-old man had been ejected from Anfield. On Aug 16, they confirmed the man from Liverpool had been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and taken into custody to be interviewed. 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever - not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together,' Semenyo wrote on Instagram.
