The Saskatchewan Roughriders held the CFL's highest-scoring offence in check on Saturday. Article content Hosting the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 33,350 at Mosaic Stadium in Week 11 of the CFL season, the Roughriders came away with a 29-9 win for their fourth straight victory to improve to 8-1 on the season. Article content Article content Hamilton, who averaged a league-high 32.3 points per game heading into the contest, fell to 6-4. Article content Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris finished the game having completed 20 of 26 passes for 298 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Article content On the other side, Saskatchewan's defence intercepted Hamilton's Bo Levi Mitchell twice and held him to just 201 passing yards and no touchdowns. Article content With the wind in their face to start the game, it was a tough start for Harris as he was nearly picked off on his first pass of the game. Article content On Hamilton's first possession, Mitchell threw a deep ball to receiver Kenny Lawler, but cornerback Tevaughn Campbell took a 24-yard pass interference penalty on the play. Article content After a 16-yard run by Hamilton's Greg Bell, Saskatchewan was able limit the Tiger-Cats to a field goal as Marc Legghio connected from 11 yards to make it 3-0. Article content On Saskatchewan's second drive, Harris was intercepted this time as Destin Talbert cut in front of receiver KeeSean Johnson to secure the turnover on the Tiger-Cats 41-yard line. Article content After the Tiger-Cats picked up three first downs to get to Saskatchewan's 13-yard line, the Roughriders defence was able to limit Hamilton to a 21-yard field goal which made it 6-0. Article content Harris was more effective on Saskatchewan's third drive of the game as he threw first-down passes to A.J. Ouellette, Johnson and Dohnte Meyers. However, the Roughriders came away with just a single point on the drive as Brett Lauther missed a 28-yard field goal wide right before the ball went through the back of the end zone. Article content Article content In the second quarter, Saskatchewan's fifth drive of the game lasted just one play as Harris found a wide-open Meyers for a 58-yard touchdown. Ouellette rumbled in a two-point convert as the Roughriders went up 9-6. Article content Two drives later, the Roughriders added to their lead. After head coach Corey Mace successfully challenged for pass interference which moved the ball 29 yards down field, Harris hit Tommy Nield for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 16-6 with the convert. Article content With time winding down in the first half, Mitchell fumbled the ball near midfield after being hit by Riders defensive end Shane Ray and the Green and White turned that into three points as Lauther connected on a 59-yard field goal as Saskatchewan took a 19-6 lead into the half.

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Heywood Yu A sold-out Mosaic Stadium got what they came to see Saturday, as the hometown Saskatchewan Roughriders improved their record to 8-1, defeating the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-9. The win continues Saskatchewan's win streak, now at four games. The Riders' last two wins were in blowout fashion, giving up a combined 15 points, scoring 60 over that span. Led by a committee of defenders, 19 different Riders made a tackle in the game. Holding Ti-Cats QB Bo Levi Mitchell to 201 yards through the air, going 16/30, throwing no touchdown passes and two interceptions. Riders' defensive backs Rolan Milligan Jr. and Tevaughn Campbell each caught an interception. Mitchell was also sacked six times. Hamilton receiver Kenny Lawler, who had been Mitchell's most dangerous offensive weapon leading up to the game, was blanketed all game long – making just three catches for 62 yards. On the offensive side, Trevor Harris continued his MOP-level play with 298 yards passing on 20 completions, 26 attempts, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Three different receivers caught a TD pass from Harris, with Dohnte Meyers, Tommy Nield and Joe Robustelli each finding the endzone for majors. Harris' 76 per cent completion rate grows a CFL-record streak of games over 70 per cent to 12 games. Harris left the game for the final three minutes of the game after taking a high hit. Back-up Jake Maier finished the game under centre for Saskatchewan. The sellout 33,350 announced attendance was the Roughriders' first at Mosaic for a non-Labour Day Classic game since the pandemic. At 8-1, Saskatchewan now sits comfortably atop the West Division with 16 points, a full two wins better than second place Calgary. It is the Riders best record since 2013, when they went 8-1 through the first nine games that season – going on to win the Grey Cup. The Riders next opponent is the Stampeders in Week 12. That game is scheduled for Saturday Aug. 23.

Apprentice jockey Pietro Moran guides Mansetti wins $1-million King's Plate race

Apprentice jockey Pietro Moran rode Mansetti to a wire-to-wire win in the $1-million King's Plate on Saturday in Toronto. Moran, 20, earned trainer Kevin Attard his third Plate victory as Mansetti, an 18-1 pick, covered the 1 1/4-mile race in two minutes 3.38 seconds. Tom's Magic was second, 2 1/2 lengths back, while Notorious Gangster finished third in the 13-horse field. Moran earned the Plate victory in just his second start in the race. His father, David, also rode in the race aboard William T. The second jewel of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown is the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes, which goes Sept. 9 at Fort Erie Racetrack. Earlier, She Feels Pretty took the lead on the final turn then held off a hard-charging Diamond Rain to win the $750,000 E.P. Taylor turf event by a head. That earned She Feels Pretty an an automatic berth into the US$2-million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf event Nov. 1 at Del Mar. She Feels Pretty, the 2/5 favourite ridden by John Velazquez, won the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:00.80. Ready for Shirl came on late to finish third ahead of Valencia.
