Aaron-Wooi Yik continue strong form in Lion City

PETALING JAYA: Top men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik maintained their impressive form at the Singapore Open with a victory over Denmark's Frederik Sogaard-Rasmus Kjaer on Wednesday (May 28).
In the first-round clash at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Aaron-Wooi Yik started strongly in the opening game. Although the Danish duo attempted a comeback in the second game, the Malaysians, buoyed by their triumph at the Malaysian Masters last week, secured their second-round spot with a 21-19, 24-22 win in 44 minutes.
This marked their second victory over Sogaard-Kjaer, having previously defeated them in the Malaysian Masters quarter-finals at Axiata Arena, considered by many as payback for the Danes' controversial win over the younger pair, Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing.
Also advancing to the next round were Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King, who defeated France's Eloi Adam-Leo Rossi 21-13, 21-18 in just 36 minutes.
However, Choong Hon Jian-Mohd Haikal Nazri saw their Singapore Open campaign end in the first round, losing to India's Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 16-21, 13-21.
Earlier, men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao advanced to the second round after receiving a walkover following the withdrawal of China's Lei Lanxi.

Pearly-Thinaah hungry for more after ruthless quarter-final win

KUALA LUMPUR: A marathon battle was expected, but Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah had other ideas as they ruthlessly swept aside Japan's Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi to storm into the Indonesia Open semi-finals in Jakarta on Friday. The world No. 4 blew away the Japanese world No. 5 duo 21-6, 21-18 in just 37 minutes in their quarter-final clash at the Istora Senayan, sealing their maiden semi-final appearance at a Super 1000 event. Iwanaga-Nakanishi had arrived in Jakarta riding high after finishing runners-up at the Singapore Open last week, but were no match for the in-form Malaysians. "We followed our game plan and are happy with our performance today. We hope to continue this momentum," said Pearly after the one-sided win. "Our performance wasn't just based on confidence, but also our communication and ability to stay calm on court. These are things we've worked on over the last few tournaments." The Malaysians had previously endured tough encounters against Iwanaga-Nakanishi. At the French Open last October, Pearly-Thinaah came through a 102-minute semi-final marathon 21-19, 19-21, 26-24 before finishing runners-up to world No. 1s Lu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China. They clashed again a week later at the Denmark Open, where the Japanese pair avenged their defeat with a 52-minute 22-20, 21-19 win on the way to the Super 750 title. This time, however, Pearly-Thinaah left no room for drama. The Malaysians will be full of confidence heading into Saturday's semi-final against China's world No. 6 Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min. The Chinese pair beat Pearly-Thinaah in their only previous meeting at the China Open last year, but Thinaah is focused on the present. "We're not thinking too much about the semi-final. For now, we just want to reflect on today's match, rest, eat well and be ready," she said. Pearly-Thinaah are gunning for their first-ever Super 1000 final, and after Friday's clinical performance, they'll believe this could finally be their moment.

Chen-Toh pass reunion test with flying colours by reaching semis in Indonesia

Malaysia's Chen Tang Jie (L) and Toh Ee Wei react as they play against Denmark's Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund during their mixed doubles quarter-final match at the Indonesian Open at Istora Senayan in Jakarta. - AFP PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have proven that their partnership has withstood tests and tribulations after reaching the semi-finals in the Indonesian Open. On Friday (June 6), the world No. 3 Tang Jie-Ee Wei battled their way to a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 win against Denmark's Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund in a pulsating 54-minute quarter-final match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta. The way they complemented one another just like old times to overcome the Danes was a sight to behold. Now that they have put behind their past troubles, Tang Jie-Ee Wei are bent on staying united in their mission to get the better of sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand in a bid to enter their first Super 1000 final on Saturday (June 7). The Thais will not be pushovers as they were in immaculate form en route to knocking out professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-16, 21-12 in another quarter-final match. The semis in Indonesia is Tang Jie-Ee Wei's best result since returning as a pair after a brief split in March due to a fallout and the former admitted that the separation had taught them to appreciate one another. "My partner played well today. We have learnt from our short break to be more patient and responsible," said Tang Jie in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation. "Playing with younger partners showed us that they have the abilities but no opportunities to play in high-level tournaments. As for us, we learnt that we needed to improve our consistency and leadership." While excited to be back on track, Ee Wei does not want to take the partnership for granted. "It was not an easy match but our coach (Nova Widianto) urged us to stay confident and trust each other," said Ee Wei. "While we are happy, we need to stay focused as this is an important week for us." Tang Jie and Ee Wei were temporarily paired with Chan Wen Tse and Loo Bing Kun respectively but thanks to encouragements from many, especially their coach Nova, they decided to give their partnership another shot and are looking to stay on for a long time. Meanwhile, Soon Huat-Shevon were left disappointed after losing to the Thais for the fifth time in eight meetings. "We've played so many times and know each other's game very well. Today, though, I didn't play well as I was not as stable and consistent as I wanted to be. The Thais capitalised on that," admitted Shevon. Added Soon Huat: "The Thais are consistent and used their speed to pressure us. We will next focus on the China and Japan Opens."
