Chen-Toh pass reunion test with flying colours by reaching semis in Indonesia
PETALING JAYA: Mixed doubles shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei have proven that their partnership has withstood tests and tribulations after reaching the semi-finals in the Indonesian Open.
On Friday (June 6), the world No. 3 Tang Jie-Ee Wei battled their way to a 17-21, 21-16, 21-14 win against Denmark's Jesper Toft-Amalie Magelund in a pulsating 54-minute quarter-final match at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
The way they complemented one another just like old times to overcome the Danes was a sight to behold.
Now that they have put behind their past troubles, Tang Jie-Ee Wei are bent on staying united in their mission to get the better of sixth seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand in a bid to enter their first Super 1000 final on Saturday (June 7).
The Thais will not be pushovers as they were in immaculate form en route to knocking out professionals Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie 21-16, 21-12 in another quarter-final match.
The semis in Indonesia is Tang Jie-Ee Wei's best result since returning as a pair after a brief split in March due to a fallout and the former admitted that the separation had taught them to appreciate one another.
"My partner played well today. We have learnt from our short break to be more patient and responsible," said Tang Jie in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation.
"Playing with younger partners showed us that they have the abilities but no opportunities to play in high-level tournaments. As for us, we learnt that we needed to improve our consistency and leadership."
While excited to be back on track, Ee Wei does not want to take the partnership for granted.
"It was not an easy match but our coach (Nova Widianto) urged us to stay confident and trust each other," said Ee Wei.
"While we are happy, we need to stay focused as this is an important week for us."
Tang Jie and Ee Wei were temporarily paired with Chan Wen Tse and Loo Bing Kun respectively but thanks to encouragements from many, especially their coach Nova, they decided to give their partnership another shot and are looking to stay on for a long time.
Meanwhile, Soon Huat-Shevon were left disappointed after losing to the Thais for the fifth time in eight meetings.
"We've played so many times and know each other's game very well. Today, though, I didn't play well as I was not as stable and consistent as I wanted to be. The Thais capitalised on that," admitted Shevon.
Added Soon Huat: "The Thais are consistent and used their speed to pressure us. We will next focus on the China and Japan Opens."

Cincinnati Open rain delays Zverev and Pegula mid-match
RAIN and lightning disrupted play at the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open, leaving key matches unfinished. Alexander Zverev was leading Brandon Nakashima 6-4, 5-4 when the weather forced a stoppage. Jessica Pegula was locked in a battle with Magda Linette, trailing 7-6 (7/5) but winning the second set 6-3 before the delay. Toronto champion Ben Shelton's match against Roberto Bautista Agut was postponed entirely due to the storm. Carlos Alcaraz avoided the chaos, defeating Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4 earlier in the day. 'Medjedovic doesn't like to run that much, so I tried to move him around as much as possible,' Alcaraz said. The Spaniard now has 13 consecutive Masters 1000 wins and 50 victories this season. He will face Luca Nardi in the quarter-finals after the Italian's opponent, Jakob Mensik, retired mid-match. 'I was really happy to get the win in a very difficult match,' Alcaraz added. Karen Khachanov secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jenson Brooksby in another completed match. Francisco Comesana edged Reilly Opelka in a gruelling three-setter, saving three match points. Opelka required medical attention for dizziness and high blood pressure before losing 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5. Comesana will next face Andrey Rublev, who overcame Alexei Popyrin in a tight three-set battle. In the WTA draw, Coco Gauff advanced without playing as Dayana Yastremska withdrew due to illness. Jasmine Paolini and Ella Seidel also progressed with straight-set victories. Barbora Krejcikova defeated Iva Jovic in three sets to reach the next round. The tournament continues with rescheduled matches as players adjust to the disrupted schedule. - AFP

Nova: Chen-Toh must be mentally tougher to go far in Paris
Giving their all: Mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei training at the Academy Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara ahead of the World Championships in Paris. — ART CHEN/The Star PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei need to adopt the champions' mentality to win the biggest titles. Mixed doubles coach Nova Widianto believes his charges are lacking mental toughness and grit needed to overcome obstacles and win matches in the big tournaments. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei have been stopped five times in the semi-finals this year and have yet to reach a final since finishing runners-up in the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou last December. The pair's best result in their careers so far was the second place finish in the Tour Finals while their biggest title was the World Tour Super 500 Korean Open last August. With the World Championships fast approaching from Aug 25-31 in Paris, Nova wants Tang Jie-Ee Wei to toughen up and find ways to win even when they are not in their best form. 'The top pairs are not always at their best but they still find ways to win and Tang Jie-Ee Wei need to learn to overcome challenges in matches too,' said Nova, after overseeing a training session at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'Currently, they are not tough enough to overcome the obstacles. They are lacking the champions' mentality and this is holding them back in the big tournaments. 'This is reflected in their results this year. Their performances have dropped compared to the last two years. 'We are trying to find ways to help them overcome this issue by giving them a challenging environment in training. If they can come up with solutions during training, then surely they can do better in tournaments.' Nova has called on Tang Jie-Ee Wei to re-ignite their season by winning a medal in the world meet. It has been 19 years since Malaysia last won a medal in the mixed doubles in the tournament and the Indonesian wants the pair to end the country's long wait. Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty, who won bronze in the 2006 edition in Madrid, are still Malaysia's sole medallists in the mixed doubles in the world meet so far. Nova feels Tang Jie-Ee Wei have a genuine chance this time as they will be seeded fourth in the tourney and will avoid the likes of China's top two seeds Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping and Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin as well as Thailand's third seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran at least until the semi-finals. 'Looking at Tang Jie-Ee Wei's seeding, they should at least reach the semi-finals and win a medal,' said Nova. 'Luck has not been good for Malaysia in the mixed doubles in the World Championships for so long and hopefully this time we can deliver better results.' The much anticipated draw for the prestigious event will be released today.

Indonesian pair Jafar-Felisha capable of going further in world meet
Indonesia's Jafar Hidayatullah (front) and Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu play a point during their mixed doubles semi-final against China's Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin at the China Open badminton tournament in Changzhou, in China's eastern Jiangsu province on July 26, 2025. (Photo by AFP) / China OUT PETALING JAYA: Watch out for fast-rising Indonesian mixed doubles shuttlers Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Pasaribu in the World Championships. Jafar-Felisha only combined a year ago but have clicked quickly and rose to No. 1 in the mixed doubles in Indonesia. The world No. 11 duo are set to pose a threat to their rivals in their first appearance in the world meet from Aug 25-31 in Paris. Jafar-Felisha proved their capabilities by bagging the World Tour Super 300 Taiwan Open title in May. The pair also captured bronze in their debut Asian Championships in April and reached the semi-finals of the Super 1000 China Open last month. Indonesian doubles coach Rionny Mainaky has backed Jafar-Felisha to defy the odds again and reach the final in Paris. 'I have seen that Jafar and Felisha are capable of handling pressure. 'I want them to prove themselves in the World Championships,' said Rionny in an interview posted in the Indonesian National Badminton Association website. 'They have the skills and they are ready. Now, it only depends on their commitment and fighting spirit. 'They only lost matches in Super 750 and 1000 tournaments due to small mistakes. We have analysed these and they know where they went wrong now. 'If they are fully focused and can stay fit, I'm confident they can reach the final in Paris. They are young and have plenty of potential,' added Rionny. Tantowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir were the last Indonesians to win the mixed doubles gold in the world meet when they triumphed in the 2017 edition in Glasgow. Tantowi-Liliyana also won the title in 2013 in Guangzhou. Indonesia have struggled to hit similar heights in the mixed doubles since the legendary pair's retirement. Jafar, 22 and Felisha, who only turns 20 next month, could be the ones to finally fill the void left behind by Tantowi-Liliyana. The youngsters will be keen to prove that they can follow in their seniors' footsteps with a good showing in Paris.
