Jordanian-Iraqi electricity interconnection to be fully operational in August
Ammon News - Director General of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Sufyan Bataineh, announced on Tuesday that work on the electricity interconnection project between Jordan and Iraq (phase two) has almost reached its final stages. In a press statement, Bataineh expected that entire phase, which aims to supply Al-Qa'im region in Iraq with 400 kilovolt electricity, to be completed by the end of August 2025.Bataineh stated that despite the challenges facing the Jordanian-Iraqi interconnection project, they were successfully overcome. He expects the amount of energy supplied to the Iraqi side after the project's completion to reach approximately 150-200 megawatts. He also emphasized the importance of the project within efforts to enhance regional integration in the energy sector, as the Jordanian electricity system is simultaneously linked to the Egyptian electricity grid via a 550 megavolt-ampere submarine cable at 400 kilovolts, in addition to a connection to the Syrian electricity grid via a single-circuit overhead transmission line at a similar voltage. In the same context, Jordan continues to supply the Palestinian side with electricity via the Ramah substation at a voltage of 33 kilovolts to feed loads in the Jericho and Jerusalem areas, amounting to approximately 80 megawatts. The Rutba area in Iraq is currently being supplied with electricity at a voltage of 132 kilovolts from the Risha substation in Jordan, with loads estimated at approximately 40 megawatts.
The regional electricity interconnection is expected to be enhanced through the Jordanian-Saudi electricity interconnection project, with a capacity of 500 megawatts for the first phase, that will provide broad prospects for inter-regional electricity exchange, strengthen the Arab common market, and achieve security of electricity supply. The two sides are completing the preparation of the project's agreements, which will be signed and implemented.

Agricultural producer prices jump 9.3% in early 2025
Ammon News - Jordan's Agricultural Producer Price Index (PPI) saw a significant 9.3% increase in the first four months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to a report issued Sunday by the Department of Statistics. The index, a key measure of inflation at the farm level, rose to 111.5 points, up from 102.0 points in the first third of 2024. According to the department's analysis, this overall increase was driven by sharp price hikes in crops such as sweet green peppers, cauliflower, and hot peppers, which collectively hold a 34.3% weighting in the index. The rise occurred despite price drops in several heavily weighted crops, including eggplant, potatoes, and tomatoes (65.7% weighting). On a year-on-year basis for the month of April, the price surge was even more pronounced. The agricultural PPI for April 2025 stood at 119.9 points, a 24.6% jump from 96.3 points in April 2024. This was primarily fueled by higher prices for green chickpeas, tomatoes, and melons. However, the month-on-month data showed a notable decrease. The April index marked a 7.4% drop from the 129.6 points recorded in March 2025. This monthly decline was attributed to falling prices for seasonal produce like loquats, watermelon, and zucchini.

Additionally, retirees, including civilian and military pensioners, will be granted 300,000 Syrian pounds. This comes just almost two months after the government had issued a similar one-time bonus for Eid al-Fitr, which amounted to the equivalent of a full month's salary for state workers. The bonuses are part of government efforts to ease the economic burdens facing Syrians amid a deepening financial crisis and high inflation rates.
