STEM enrolment climbs, but jobs lag behind
PETALING JAYA: Rising enrolment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects in Malaysian schools may signal progress towards long-standing policy targets, but experts warn the labour market is not ready to absorb the growing number of science and technology graduates, risking a worsening underemployment problem. Universiti Malaya employability analysis expert Dr Diana Abdul Wahab said the rationale for prioritising STEM remained strong, particularly in high-demand fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics and cybersecurity. 'The Malaysian government has invested billions into digital transformation initiatives, creating thousands of new tech jobs. Furthermore, the country's engineer-to-population ratio of 1:170 is considerably lower than the 1:100 ratio seen in developed nations, highlighting an urgent need for more engineering professionals. But a numerical target alone is insufficient without ensuring the skills developed align with high-growth sectors,' she said. She cited Malaysian Employers Federation data showing that 70% of graduates were in low- or semi-skilled jobs, with many working outside their fields of study. Diana added that the policy's binary 'STEM versus arts' framing was outdated, pointing to a 2024 graduate employability study by the Higher Education Ministry which found that applied arts disciplines such as accountancy and business achieved among the highest graduate employability rates. 'This challenges the idea that STEM alone is the key to career success,' she said. She noted Singapore's adoption of the STEAM model, which integrates arts into STEM to encourage creativity and design thinking alongside technical skills. 'This is not a rejection of STEM but an enhancement of it,' she said, warning that outdated, passive teaching methods in Malaysia continued to limit students' higher-order thinking skills regardless of stream. Universiti Malaysia Kelantan industrial relations expert Prof Dr Balakrishnan Parasuraman shared similar views, saying the government's prioritisation of STEM aligned with the nation's shift towards high-tech industries such as AI, engineering, biotechnology and agribusiness. While supporting the 60:40 STEM-to-arts enrolment policy target, Balakrishnan cautioned that the increase in STEM graduates must be matched with the creation of high-value jobs. 'Many engineers end up as Grab drivers because of limited career development. We must grow high-tech industries and transform SMEs into semi-skilled or high-skilled sectors so graduates are in demand. Otherwise, we only invest in training them, but they leave because the opportunities are better and larger in number overseas,' he said. Balakrishnan stressed that non-STEM roles remained critical, particularly in industries where technical and non-technical skills were integrated. 'Digital marketing, TikTok and creative content are now major business areas. But even these need the integration of STEM and arts. Engineers make products, arts graduates market them. Everything is interlinked.' He called for a coordinated employability policy led by the prime minister and involving the Education, Higher Education and Human Resources ministries. 'We must reform the labour market, ensure employability preparation for both streams and give students a chance. Don't reject them without giving an opportunity.' In a written reply in Parliament to Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN–Kubang Pasu) on Aug 5, the Education Ministry said 50.83% of Form Four students were in the STEM stream in 2024, up from 45.73% in 2023, describing it as a positive step towards the 60:40 target. The ministry said it would continue to strengthen STEM education through initiatives to attract more students, positioning it as key to producing a skilled and competitive workforce.

Privacy nightmare? Instagram's location-sharing feature draws comparisons to Snapchat
The feature, which was quietly introduced this week, allows users to share their precise, real-time location with selected friends. The feature, tucked at the top of your direct message inbox, lets you see exactly where your friends are and vice versa but only if both parties opt in. - Photo illustrated by Sinar Daily Instagram has rolled out a new 'Friend Map' in the United States (US), a move that has drawn comparisons to Snapchat and triggered backlash over privacy concerns. The feature, which was quietly introduced this week, allows users to share their precise, real-time location with selected friends. Many users, like Piper Foxx (@Piperfoxxi), reported that their location settings had been enabled without warning. On paper, it's all about staying connected. In practice, people are calling it a privacy nightmare waiting to happen. The feature, tucked at the top of your direct message inbox, lets you see exactly where your friends are and vice versa, but only if both parties opt-in. The backlash was so loud that Instagram head Adam Mosseri had to post a clarification on Thursday, assuring users their location will only be shared if they choose to. "We're double-checking everything, but so far it looks mostly like people are confused and assume that, because they can see themselves on the map when they open it, other people can see them too," he said. He added that the feature is designed to require "double consent" to ensure no one shares their location without explicitly choosing to do so. That hasn't stopped the avalanche of warnings flooding X and TikTok. One viral all-caps tweet with nearly 200,000 likes urged people to turn the location off on Instagram right away. Many users, like Piper Foxx (@Piperfoxxi), reported that their location settings had been enabled without warning. Instagram's new feature might be dressed up as a cute way to connect, but it's also a reminder that oversharing online has consequences. "Instagram turning on our exact location for thousands of people to see is actually terrifying. That's insane. Make sure to turn that off," she posted. If this is giving you déjà vu, you're not wrong. Snapchat rolled out its Snap Map back in 2017 and got roasted for similar reasons, with safety groups warning users not to share their precise location with strangers. Meta insisted Instagram's Friend Map is also opt-in and your location is off by default. But here's the catch: if you've ever tagged a location in a Story or post, your phone's location services may already be on and that makes it a lot easier to accidentally switch the feature on. Experts warn that while the idea of tracking your best friends at brunch might sound fun, your location data is worth a lot more to Big Tech than just casual hangouts. Instagram's new feature might be dressed up as a cute way to connect, but it's also a reminder that oversharing online has consequences. If you value your privacy and safety, double-check your settings before you accidentally give the internet a live feed of your life. Because in 2025, the only people who should know your exact location are your family and close friends. More Like This

WhatsApp takes down 6.8 million accounts linked to criminal scam centers, Meta says
In a Tuesday (Aug 5) announcement, Meta said it was also rolling new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams. — AP Photo/Patrick Sison, File NEW YORK: WhatsApp has taken down 6.8 million accounts that were "linked to criminal scam centres' targeting people online around that world, its parent company Meta said this week. The account deletions, which Meta said took place over the first six months of the year, arrive as part of wider company efforts to crack down on scams. In a Tuesday (Aug 5) announcement, Meta said it was also rolling new tools on WhatsApp to help people spot scams – including a new safety overview that the platform will show when someone who is not in a user's contacts adds them to a group, as well as ongoing test alerts to pause before responding. Scams are becoming all too common and increasingly sophisticated in today's digital world – with too-good-to-be-true offers and unsolicited messages attempting to steal consumers' information or money filling our phones, social media and other corners of the internet each day. Meta noted that "some of the most prolific' sources of scams are criminal scam centres, which often span from forced labour operated by organised crime – and warned that such efforts often target people on many platforms at once, in attempts to evade detection. That means that a scam campaign may start with messages over text or a dating app, for example, and then move to social media and payment platforms, the California-based company said. Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram, pointed to recent scam efforts that it said attempted to use its own apps – as well as TikTok, Telegram and AI-generated messages made using ChatGPT – to offer payments for fake likes, enlist people into a pyramid scheme and/or lure others into cryptocurrency investments. Meta linked these scams to a criminal scam centre in Cambodia – and said it disrupted the campaign in partnership with ChatGPT maker OpenAI. – AP .
