
China's services activity growth hits 14-month high in July, S&P PMI shows
The S&P Global China General Services PMI rose to 52.6 in July from 50.6 the previous month, marking the fastest pace since May last year. The 50-mark separates expansion from contraction.
The reading contrasted with China's official survey, which showed services activity edging down slightly to 50.0 in July from 50.1 in June.
The S&P PMI is considered a better read of trends among smaller, export-oriented firms, particularly along the east coast, while the official PMI primarily tracks large and medium-sized enterprises, including state-owned companies.
Meanwhile, the S&P China General Composite PMI dipped to 50.8 in July from 51.3 the previous month.
China's economy, the world's second largest, slowed less than expected in the second quarter helped by policy measures and factories leveraging the U.S.-China trade truce to front-load shipments. However, concerns remain about the second half of the year as export momentum weakens, prices decline and consumer confidence remains subdued, partly hurt by a prolonged property market downturn.
According to the S&P Global survey, the fastest growth in new business in a year supported the rise in activity heading into the second half of the year. The new export orders sub-index rose for the first time in three months, bolstered by stronger tourism activity and more stable trade conditions.
Last week, U.S. and Chinese officials agreed to pursue an extension of their 90-day tariff truce after two days of what both sides called constructive talks in Stockholm.
The survey showed that after reducing staffing levels in June, service providers increased employment at the quickest rate since July 2024, driven by higher workloads and improved confidence. This led to a slower accumulation of backlogged work.
Rising costs for raw materials, fuel and salaries kept average input prices in expansion territory in July. As a result, service providers raised their selling prices for the first time in six months.
With new business and activity on the rise, overall business confidence improved.

OpenAI takes on Meta by launching free and customisable AI models
OpenAI is taking on Mark Zuckerberg's Meta by launching its own freely available artificial intelligence models. The ChatGPT developer has announced two open-weight large language models, which are free to download and can be customised by a user. Meta's Llama models are available on a similar basis, and OpenAI's move marks a departure from ChatGPT, which is based on a 'closed' model that cannot be customised. Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, said the company was excited to add to a stack of freely available AI models 'based on democratic values … and for wide benefit'. He added: 'We're excited to make this model, the result of billions of dollars of research, available to the world to get AI into the hands of the most people possible.' Zuckerberg, similarly, has said that making models freely available and customisable will 'ensure that more people around the world have access to the benefits and opportunities of AI' and that power is not concentrated in the hands of a small number of companies. However, Meta has said his company may need to be 'careful' about taking a similar approach with highly advanced AI models. DeepSeek, a Chinese rival to OpenAI and Meta, has also released powerful models that can be downloaded and customised freely. OpenAI said the two models, called gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b-two, outperform similarly sized models on reasoning tasks, with the larger, 120b model achieving a near-equal performance to its o4-mini model in terms of core reasoning. Open AI added that during the testing process it had created 'maliciously fine-tuned' versions of the models to simulate biological and cybersecurity threats but found that they were 'unable to reach high capability levels'. The existence of freely available, powerful AI models that can be customised by developers has alarmed some experts who have warned that they could be adapted to cause serious harm, such as developing bioweapons. Meta has defined its Llama models as 'open source', meaning they can also be downloaded and customised freely, while their training datasets, architecture and training code are also provided. However, the Open Source Initiative, a US-based industry organisation, has said the restrictions Meta places on using its models mean it does not qualify as fully open source. OpenAI has used the term 'open weight', effectively a notch down from open source, which means the model can still be fine tuned – but its workings are not fully transparent to the developer. OpenAI's announcement came amid speculation that a new version of the model that underpins ChatGPT could be released soon. On Sunday Altman shared a screenshot of what appeared to be the company's latest AI model, GPT-5. Meanwhile, Google has outlined its latest step towards artificial general intelligence (AGI) with a new model that allows AI systems to interact with a convincing simulation of the real world. The Genie 3 'world model' could be used to train robots and autonomous vehicles as they engage with realistic recreations of environments such as warehouses, according to Google. The US technology company's AI division, Google DeepMind, argues that world models are a key step to achieving AGI, a hypothetical level of AI where a system can carry out most tasks on a par with humans – rather than just individual tasks such as playing chess or translating languages – and potentially do someone's job. DeepMind said such models would play an important role in the development of AI agents, or systems that carry out tasks autonomously. 'We expect this technology to play a critical role as we push toward AGI, and agents play a greater role in the world,' DeepMind said.

US trade gap skids to 2-year low; tariffs exert pressure on service sector
Aug 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in June on a sharp drop in consumer goods imports, and the trade gap with China shrank to its lowest in more than 21 years, the latest evidence of the imprint on global commerce President Donald Trump is making with sweeping tariffs on imported goods. Trump's tariffs are leaving their mark on the U.S. economy beyond trade, as a measure of activity in the vast services sector hit stall-speed in July, with businesses saying the swarm of new import taxes is driving up costs and making business planning more difficult. The overall trade gap narrowed 16.0% in June to $60.2 billion, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Tuesday. Days after reporting that the goods trade deficit tumbled 10.8% to its lowest since September 2023, the government said the full deficit including services also was its narrowest since then. Exports of goods and services totaled $277.3 billion, down from more than $278 billion in May, while total imports were $337.5 billion, down from $350.3 billion. Imports of consumer goods and industrial supplies and materials were both the lowest since the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, while exports of capital goods hit a record high. The diminished trade deficit contributed heavily to the rebound in U.S. gross domestic product during the second quarter, reported last week, reversing a drag in the first quarter when imports had surged as consumers and businesses front-loaded purchases to beat the imposition of Trump's tariffs. The economy in the second quarter expanded at a 3.0% annualized rate after contracting at a 0.5% rate in the first three months of the year, but the headline figure masked underlying indications that activity was weakening. Last week Trump, ahead of a self-imposed deadline of August 1, issued a barrage of notices informing scores of trading partners of higher import taxes set to be imposed on their goods exports to the U.S. With tariff rates ranging from 10% to 41% on imports to the U.S. set to kick in on August 7, the Budget Lab at Yale now estimates the average overall U.S. tariff rate has shot up to 18.3%, the highest since 1934, from between 2% and 3% before Trump returned to the White House in January. 'Last week's trade announcement reduced policy uncertainty, but businesses hoping tariffs were just threats must now adjust to the reality they are here to stay,' Nationwide Financial Markets Economist Oren Klachkin said in a note. 'We think the negative impact of high tariff rates will outweigh any positives from lower policy uncertainty.' A centerpiece of Tuesday's report was the latest steep drop in the U.S. trade deficit with China, which tumbled by roughly a third to $9.5 billion in June to its narrowest since February 2004. Over five consecutive months of declines, it has narrowed by $22.2 billion - a 70% reduction. U.S. and China trade negotiators met last week in Sweden in the latest round of engagement over the trade war that has intensified since Trump's return. The U.S. currently imposes a 30% tariff on most Chinese imports, which have fueled a steep drop-off in inbound goods traffic from China. Imports from China dropped to $18.9 billion, the lowest since 2009. The trade negotiators have recommended that Trump extend an August 12 deadline for the current tariff rate to expire and snap back to more than 100%, where it had briefly been earlier this year after a round of tit-for-tat increases by both sides. "We're getting very close to a deal," Trump said Tuesday in an interview on CNBC. "We're getting along with China very well." The deficit with China was not the only one to narrow. Amid a continuing impasse on trade talks with Canada and hefty tariffs imposed on autos, steel and aluminum, the trade gap with the United States' northern neighbor was the smallest in nearly five years at $1.3 billion. The trade deficit with Germany also slid, coming in at $3.8 billion and the lowest in five years. But a pair of key Asian trading partners - Taiwan and Vietnam - both posted record surpluses. The tariff effects showed signs last month of spilling over into the domestic services sector, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of total U.S. economic activity. Business activity unexpectedly flatlined in July with little change in orders and a further weakening in employment even as input costs climbed by the most in nearly three years, underscoring the ongoing drag on businesses from tariff policy uncertainty. The Institute for Supply Management's nonmanufacturing purchasing managers index slipped to 50.1 last month from 50.8 in June. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the services PMI would rise to 51.5. A PMI reading above 50 indicates growth in the services sector, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy. The survey's measure of services employment fell to 46.4, the lowest level since March, from 47.2 in June. It has indicated contraction in four of the last five months, and the reading followed the release last week of the Labor Department's surprisingly soft U.S. employment report. Price pressures, meanwhile, continue to mount. The survey's prices paid index rose to 69.9, the highest level since October 2022, from 67.5 in June. Inflation until now has largely remained moderate because businesses have been selling merchandise accumulated before import duties came into effect, but data last week showed prices in some categories of goods like home furnishings and recreational gear have begun rising briskly. More benign inflation from the services sector has helped keep overall inflation in check, but the ISM data brings into question whether that trend will continue or further fan concerns about the emergence of stagflation. Respondents to the ISM survey frequently mentioned tariffs as a drag. 'Trade uncertainty causing client reevaluation of feasibility for projects in certain sectors, resulting in some delays or cancellations," a respondent from the construction sector said.

US dollar rises as market eyes Fed chair successor
NEW YORK/MILAN, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar rose against most currencies on Tuesday, but remained within striking distance of Friday's lows, with the market still in consolidation mode. The market is focused on President Donald Trump's nominations to the Federal Reserve Board after the resignation of Fed Governor Adriana Kugler last Friday as well as his choice for commissioner of Bureau of Labor Statistics. Trump on Tuesday said he would announce decisions soon on a short-term replacement for Kugler, including his pick for the next Fed chair. He ruled out U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as a contender to replace current chief Jerome Powell whose term ends in May 2026. Bessent wanted to remain in his current job. The White House is looking at four candidates to replace Powell. "These last two days we have been consolidating. And the data this week doesn't really matter so much. With the Q2 GDP out, most of the data is old news," said Marc Chandler, chief market strategist, at Bannockburn Forex. "What we're waiting for is the next day or two, people are expecting Trump to announce who's going to replace the retiring Fed governor, and who's going to be at the BLS." Trump said on Sunday he a new BLS commissioner within three or four days. Analysts said Kugler's exit and the firing of the BLS's commissioner could harden views that the Federal Open Market Committee's independence is protected, recalling that the new appointee will be just one vote on the FOMC. Tuesday's data, meanwhile, had little impact on the currency market. U.S. services sector activity unexpectedly showed a flat outcome in July, with little change in orders and a further weakening in employment even as input costs climbed by the most in nearly three years. Weak U.S. jobs data last Friday had boosted bets on Federal Reserve rate cuts and triggered a sharp dollar selloff. U.S. rate futures are now pricing in an 88% chance of the Fed cutting rates in its next meeting in September, compared with 35% a week earlier, according to the CME's FedWatch. They also indicate 60 basis points (bps) of cuts by end-December and 130 bps in rate declines by October 2026, 30 bps more than the levels seen on Friday before the U.S. jobs data. Goldman Sachs expects the Fed to deliver three consecutive 25 basis-point rate cuts starting in September, with a 50 basis-point move possible if the next jobs report shows a further rise in unemployment. The dollar rose 0.2% to 147.42 yen , after minutes of a June policy meeting showed a few Bank of Japan board members said the central bank would consider resuming interest rate increases if trade frictions de-escalate. Sterling was flat against the dollar, as traders expect the Bank of England to maintain its rate guidance at this week's policy meeting. It was last little changed at $1.3292 . The focus, however, remains on tariff uncertainties, after the latest duties imposed on imports from dozens of countries last week by Trump increased worries about the health of the global economy. The 15% tariff that European Union goods face when entering the U.S. is all-inclusive, a senior EU official said on Tuesday. The Swiss franc , on the other hand, was flat at 0.8072 per dollar, after dropping 0.5% in the previous session. But it was still above the levels seen before Friday's data at around 0.8128. Switzerland is looking to make a "more attractive offer" in trade talks with Washington, to avert a 39% U.S. import tariff on Swiss goods that threatens its export-driven economy.
