Ronaldo reflects on cup glory with broken leg pledge

Another trophy for Cristiano Ronaldo. More records, more adulation.
The Portugal star shed tears after helping his team win the UEFA Nations League at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Sunday.
Ronaldo scored to help his side draw level with Spain 2-2 in the final, then watched as his teammates won the penalty shootout 5-3.
"I have many titles with my clubs, but nothing is better than winning for Portugal," he said.
"These are tears. It's mission accomplished and so much joy."
The 40-year-old had been the first to run out onto the field for the pre-game warm-up, sparking a huge roar from supporters.
Three days after helping Portugal to their first win over Germany for 25 years, scoring the winner for a 2-1 victory in the Nations League semi-finals, Ronaldo conceded that he won't be able to play forever.
On Sunday he was driving the team again, though it was initially a frustrating game as his chances were limited by Spain's hard-working defenders.
Nuno Mendes fired Portugal level after Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring. Then Mikel Oyarzabal put Spain ahead 2-1 at the break.
But Ronaldo was in the right place at the right time to fire home the equaliser in the 61st minute, setting off joyous scenes among his faithful fans. It was Ronaldo's 138th international goal. Nobody has ever scored more for their country.
Ronaldo kept trying in what was his record-extending 221st appearance for the country, but eventually had to go off in the 88th to standing ovations from fans and a hug from coach Roberto Martinez.
"I had already felt it during the warm-up, I had been feeling it for some time, but for the national team, if I had to break my leg, I would have broken it," Ronaldo said.
"It's for a trophy, I had to play and I gave it my all."
Ronaldo's future is uncertain as his contract with Saudi club Al-Nassr only runs to the end of June.
That didn't stop him celebrating Portugal's second Nations League triumph, having won the inaugural tournament in 2019.
"We are small in size but we are big in talent, big in personality," Manchester United's Portuguese captain Bruno Fernandes said.
"We knew it would be a very difficult game. Spain are one of the best national teams in the world. But we also have a very good team. When we have this togetherness it is very difficult to beat us."
Earlier on Sunday in Stuttgart, Kylian Mbappe scored one and set up the other as France beat Germany 2-0 for third place.
Aurelien Tchouameni set up club teammate Mbappe to score just before the break after the hosts had dominated the first half.
The Real Madrid superstar then set up substitute Michael Olise to seal the result in the 84th minute after a much-improved second-half performance from the visitors.

Sensational six for LIV Golf's hot Chilean

Joaquin Niemann has birdied the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th holes to cap off a bogey-free, eight-under-par 63 for his final round and hang on to win LIV Golf Virginia in Gainesville. The 26-year-old Chilean went 15-under 198 for the week at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club and beat Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (66) and Anirban Lahiri of India (68) by a single stroke. Lahiri had a birdie attempt at his final hole on Sunday to force a playoff with Niemann but could not convert. Niemann's sixth LIV win - all coming in a 17-month span - broke a tie with Brooks Koepka for the most victories in the Saudi-backed league's brief history. He had to endure a rain delay and fend off a crowded field of players to finish the job. "I felt like there was a lot going on during the rain delay," Niemann said. "Tried to keep my mind on the right thoughts, and having Bryson (DeChambeau) coming off pretty clutch at the end, Phil (Mickelson) as well, Anirban... "It could have been for anybody, and I felt like I was all day just behind, especially since the beginning of the week, and I feel like the only word that I was telling myself from last night was just have faith. There's nothing else I can do, have a good attitude, and just wait." The win propels him into next week's US Open, where he is in the field on an exemption reserved for one of the top players in the league. "I feel like I'm still pretty far away of winning (a major)," Niemann added. "I'm just happy to be playing at the US Open. It's going to be a great course, pretty tough conditions. I'm just looking forward for that challenge and have a fun week." After a two-putt birdie at the par-5 14th hole, Niemann sank a nine-footer at the 15th and a 10-footer at the par-3 16th. He reached 15 under par when he stuck his second shot at No.17 to about a foot from the pin to set up a tap-in birdie. DeChambeau and Mickelson each shot six-under 65s to get into a tie for fourth at 13 under with Belgium's Thomas Pieters (63) and Bubba Watson (67). Marc Leishman (66) was the leading Australian at nine under and in joint 10th, with Cameron Smith (68) five under, Lucas Herbert (68) three over and Matt Jones (70) seven over. In the team standings, the DeChambeau-captained Crushers GC went 15 under for the day to finish 36 under par and secure the team title by two strokes over 4Aces GC. Football world in mourning as fan falls to death during Portugal's win over Spain in Nations League final

The football world is in mourning after a spectator died during the Nations League final between Spain and Portugal on Sunday. It's understood the fan fell from the second tier of the main stand at the Allianz Arena in Munich. The incident happened during the first period of extra-time, with the match continuing as the fan received treatment from paramedics. 'There was a medical emergency at the Munich arena, and despite the best efforts of the medical team, the person sadly passed away,' UEFA said in a statement. 'Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this difficult time.' Portugal went on to win the match on penalties to given 40-year-old legend Cristiano Ronaldo yet another trophy to add to his collection. But celebrations were somewhat withdrawn after the players learned of the tragic incident. 'I would like to express my condolences to the family of the fan that died,' Portugal defender Nuno Mendes said. 'It casts a pall on our victory today.' Spain coach Luis de la Fuente addressed the incident at the start of his post-game media conference. 'Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today,' de la Fuente said. 'My condolences to the family.'
