Single hand can't clap, says SC, gives interim bail to rape accused

Supreme Court
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday gave interim bail to a 23-year-old accused of raping a 40-year-old, noting that charges had not been framed even though he had been in jail for nine months.
In scathing comments, a bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma also asked how Delhi Police could file a rape case against the man, a social media influencer, when the woman had gone voluntarily with him.
"A single hand can't clap. On what basis have you filed case under Section 376 of IPC. She is not a baby. The woman is 40 years old. They have gone together to Jammu. Why have you invoked 376. This lady goes to Jammu seven times and the husband is not bothered," the bench observed.
It directed that the accused be produced before the trial court and granted interim bail subject to terms and conditions.
According to the police complaint, the woman first came into contact with him in 2021 through social media while seeking a social media influencer to promote her clothing brand. During initial interactions, the accused allegedly requested an iPhone to enhance content creation, which she arranged through an authorised Apple Store in Jammu.

However, their professional relationship soured after the accused attempted to resell the device.
In December 2021, the man visited the woman at her house in Noida to return the Rs 20,000. He subsequently persuaded her to travel for a brand shoot in Connaught Place. During the journey, the accused allegedly gave her sweets laced with intoxicants and she lost consciousness. Contrary to assurances that she would be taken to Hindu Rao Hospital, the man allegedly took her to a secluded area, sexually assaulted her, stole money from her purse, and captured her nude photographs.
Thereafter, the woman was allegedly coerced into travelling to Jammu where she was subjected to continued sexual abuse, extortion, and threats over a two-and-a-half-year period, according to the complaint.

Arizona: Explosive report claims drama professor accused of forcing student to undress onstage, watch porn

Arizona: Explosive report claims drama professor accused of forcing student to undress onstage, watch porn. (Pic credit: MCC website) A shocking investigative report by the Arizona Republic has unveiled disturbing allegations against a drama professor at Mesa Community College, Mace Archer, 56, who is accused of coercing students to strip, flirting, and exposing them to pornography during class. School officials have launched an investigation into the claims, though students assert their complaints were ignored for months before the probe. According to the report, students in Archer's drama class maintained a shared file documenting two years of alleged "sexual depravity." This file reportedly contains over a dozen anonymous accusations. Among the most unsettling allegations are claims that Archer coached a student to "dive into" her personal experience of sexual assault for performance purposes and, in another alleged incident, straddled a student during a "demonstration." He is also accused of playing "orgy porn" videos for his students. Most disturbingly, Archer is alleged to have coerced three female students, some of whom were still teenagers, into taking off their clothes on stage. Under the guise of "vulnerability exercises" for midterms, students were reportedly forced to strip down to their underwear or go completely nude in front of Archer and their classmates. A student in Archer's class, told the Republic that the purpose of the midterm was for students to face their fears, not to end up nude. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo However, she and other female students claim Archer made it precisely about that. "On the first day, two women stripped down to their underwear. The person who got naked was on the second day," the student recounted. "We all knew what to expect." She described the scene of one student stripping silently, "She was just silent. She just took her clothes off. People were kind of shocked, but it was silent. No music, no talking, nothing." The student was one of approximately 16 students in a second-level acting class taught by Archer, which she said was intended to test the limits of students' fear. While school officials would not confirm to the Arizona Republic whether encouraging or watching students undress in an acting class constituted an explicit policy violation, the publication noted that school rules prohibit "any unwelcome conduct that a reasonable person would find so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it denies a person equal educational access." Administrators for Maricopa Community Colleges, the district overseeing Mesa Community College, declined interview requests from the Arizona Republic. Lindsey Wilson, a spokesperson for the district, said in a May 19 email, "Because this is an active personnel matter, we cannot provide specific details to protect the privacy of those involved." Wilson added, "Our colleges take any allegations of misconduct seriously and are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for students, faculty, and staff," assuring that appropriate action would be taken based on the investigation's outcome. The Mesa Police Department confirmed it is not currently investigating the accusations.

What led Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. to hire security for himself and his daughter

What led Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. to hire security for himself and his daughter (Image Source: Getty Images) Lance McCullers Jr., a pitcher for the Houston Astros, took the unusual step of hiring private security all the time for his family after threats against his 5-year-old daughter Ava became more severe on the internet. Because the threats got so serious, Lance McCullers' wife, Kara, had to discuss them by phone in front of their daughter. The veteran pitcher has had to comfort his daughter after she innocently asked him about the meaning of threats and the possibility of harm to their family. These serious dangers have changed normal family life so much that security services are now necessary. Online harassment reaches dangerous new levels for Houston Astros families The issue with Lance McCullers Jr. is part of a troubling trend for players and their families, as online attacks have turned from basic complaints to actual threats. After learning about the threats made against the McCullers family, the Houston Astros called both the MLB security team and the Houston Police Department. Police representatives have stated that the case is still under investigation as authorities attempt to determine who sent the threatening messages. Earlier this month, Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks experienced the same problems when his family was threatened after he struggled against the New York Mets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The 36-year-old pitcher, who recovered from non-Hodgkin lymphoma, said online trolls wished he had died of cancer, showing just how far these bullies will go. The reaction from bettors in both events suggests that sports betting has made fans angrier, and they now direct their frustrations at the players. Security measures and league response to protect Major League Baseball families Lance McCullers Jr. acknowledged that hiring 24-hour security became an absolute necessity once threats escalated to include his children, stating simply, "You have to at that point." The Houston Astros organisation has implemented comprehensive security protocols, including uniformed police officers stationed in family seating sections during home games, measures that were established even before the recent threats against the McCullers family. Milwaukee Brewers All-Star Christian Yelich, the 2018 National League Most Valuable Player, confirmed that receiving online abuse has become "a nightly thing" for most players across the league. Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene completely deleted his Instagram account due to constant harassment from angry bettors, while Chicago White Sox outfielder Mike Tauchman noted that some teammates have endured racist and homophobic slurs both online and at ballparks. Major League Baseball and individual franchises have developed cybersecurity programs specifically designed to identify and remove threatening social media accounts, though Boston Red Sox spokesperson Abby Murphy acknowledged the difficulty in tracking anonymous online harassers. The league continues expanding security measures for player families both at home venues and during road trips. Also Read: Top 10 tallest players in MLB history: Where does Aaron Slegers rank? The McCullers incident serves as a stark reminder that professional athletes' families, including young children, should never become targets for fan frustration, regardless of on-field performance or betting outcomes.

WBSSC issues notice for recruitment of over 35,726 school teachers

The West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) has issued a notice for recruitment of 35,726 teachers of classes 9-10 and 11-12 at state-aided schools abiding by the Supreme Court directive to issue notification by May 31. As per the notice, uploaded on the WBSSC site on late Thursday night, there will be recruitment of 23,312 teachers for classes 9-10 and 12,514 teachers for classes 11-12 in the secondary and higher secondary schools respectively. In a significant clause, the notice stipulated the age limit from 21 years-40 years. 'Upper age limit is, however, relaxable by 5 years for scheduled caste/scheduled tribe candidates, 3 years for backward class candidates and 8 years for physically handicapped candidates,' the notice said. Candidates will be given carbon copies of OMR sheets which will be preserved for three years. The online applications will be received from June 16, 5 pm till June 17, 5 pm, it said. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, on April 3, upheld the Calcutta High Court verdict of April 22, 2024, invalidating the appointment of teachers and staffers in the state-run and aided schools, terming the entire selection process 'vitiated and tainted'. On April 17, the top court extended till December 31 the services of the terminated teachers found untainted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), after taking note of the state government's submissions that the mass terminations have adversely impacted teaching in the schools. The Supreme Court said the advertisement for fresh recruitment will be published on or before May 31 and the entire process including the examination will be completed by December 31 this year. The court asked the state government and its West Bengal School Service Commission to file a compliance affidavit on the initiation of the recruitment process on or before May 31.
