Majors-best Tigers end 6-game skid with All-Star Tarik Skubal's strong start
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner and starter in Tuesday's All-Star Game cruised into the seventh inning with a two-hit shutout and a tenuous 1-0 lead. He left with runners at the corners and two outs, and the Rangers' Adolis García scored on a wild pitch by Tyler Holton.
But Detroit's Matt Vierling hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Will Vest entered in the eighth and got four straight outs — against the top four batters in Texas' order — for his 16th save for the Tigers (60-40).
Skubal left the park still with 10 wins (one shy of the AL lead), 164 strikeouts (one behind Boston's Garrett Crochet) and a 2.19 ERA (tied with Crochet for the best in the American League).
'We're the first to 60, right? That matters more (than his personal stats),' Skubal said. 'We just haven't particularly been playing our best baseball, I don't think, for the last couple weeks. That's just part of the season. Not from lack of effort or anything like that. But I knew I wanted to win today. I expect every time I go out there to put our team in position to win, and we were able to do that.'
Skubal struck out 11 and walked none in his seventh double-digit strikeout game this season. His final batter was a strikeout of Jonah Heim that left him at 105 pitches, three short of his career high.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Skubal 'emptied his tank' on the Heim at-bat and made the pitching change to avoid overworking him.
'If we're going anywhere (this season), we're going with him,' Hinch said.
Two of Texas' four hits off Skubal were by Corey Seager, the lone left-handed hitter in the starting lineup against the lefty Skubal. Seager went 2 for 3 off Skubal, improving to 8 for 12 in his career.
Skubal said he asked Seager during last year's All-Star festivities: 'Bro, how do I get you out? Can you tell me?' Seager, Skubal said, politely declined and claimed not to see the ball well when hitting against him.
'When he's right, the stuff he does at the dish, the best in the league,' Skubal said.
Skubal is again among the best in baseball on the mound. He did his part in ending what was the majors' longest active losing streak, even without getting a personal W.

LSU football coach Brian Kelly talks the return of Whit Weeks and Harold Perkins
LSU football kicked off training camp on Wednesday. The practice marked the much-anticipated return of two LSU stars: linebackers Whit Weeks and Harold Perkins. Weeks and Perkins both missed the entirety of spring practice after recovering from injuries suffered in 2024. Perkins tore his ACL vs. UCLA in week 4, missing the rest of the year. Weeks injured his ankle vs. Baylor and required surgery. There were positive reports about the recoveries of both players throughout the offseason, with head coach Brian Kelly and defensive coordinator Blake Baker saying Weeks and Perkins would be ready for the start of fall camp. That was made official on Wednesday. Kelly was happy to see his impact defenders back on the field. "Presence is impactful, right? You see them, you feel them, you hear them. And so when somebody's not around in a room, you can kind of feel the temperature change a little bit. The temperature's a little bit different when those two guys are in the room," Kelly said. For Kelly, it's not just about what Weeks and Perkins can do as playmakers, but the tone they set for the defense. "People talk about missing somebody. It's hard to replace great players, but it's even harder to replace great leaders. And those guys lead by example and make a huge difference," Kelly said. Weeks is garnering All-American hype as he enters his junior campaign. He was one of the SEC's most productive linebackers in 2024, ranking No. 2 in the conference in pressures and stops. Perkins opted to return to LSU for a fourth season. He emerged as a star pass rusher in 2022, but 2023 and 2024 were up and down. LSU looks for Perkins to re-emerge in 2025 as he takes on Baker's STAR role.

Dodgers Predicted To Land Michael Conforto Alternative In Orioles Trade
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Though their roster has more talent than any other roster in Major League Baseball, it appears the Los Angeles Dodgers still have work to do at the trade deadline. The pitching staff could use reinforcements, but the surprise issue for the Dodgers has been the outfield. Andy Pages and Teoscar Hernández will have starting spots no matter what, but the Michael Conforto contract certainly hasn't worked out the way the Los Angeles Dodgers had hoped. Conforto, who signed a one-year, $17 million deal to join the defending World Series champions, owns a .654 OPS and -0.3 bWAR thus far in 93 games. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 05: Michael Conforto #23 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat against the Miami Marlins in the second inning at loanDepot park on May 05, 2025 in Miami, Florida. MIAMI, FLORIDA - MAY 05: Michael Conforto #23 of the Los Angeles Dodgers at bat against the Miami Marlins in the second inning at loanDepot park on May 05, 2025 in Miami, positional flexibility means the Dodgers could acquire a player at any of the three outfield positions if they're looking for a Conforto upgrade. And it would appear that the team with the most outfield talent to spare is the Baltimore Orioles. That's why on Thursday, Jesse Yomtov of USA Today predicted that the Dodgers would acquire one of two potential trade chips from the last-place Orioles by the 6 p.m. ET deadline. "The reigning champions need help in the outfield and they'll swing a deal with Baltimore for Cedric Mullins or Ramon Laureano," wrote Yomtov. Mullins, a true rental, has a .732 OPS and 15 home runs this season, and has lately made a habit of robbing home runs. Laureano, who has a club option for next year, has a shocking .887 OPS and 2.9 bWAR; you could make the argument he's been the Orioles' best player. It will be fascinating to see if the Dodgers agree with Yomtov's argument that their outfield is insufficient. They also have the ability to shift six-time Gold Glove right fielder Mookie Betts back to his natural position, as they did last year, if things get desperate. More MLB: Tigers-Pirates Blockbuster?
