American Muslim Activist Abdullah Akl At Staten Island Mosque: Columbia University Activist Mahmoud Khalil Was Targeted By President Trump; They Claim He Is Antisemitic, But He Just Stood Up For Gaza; It Is Your Right Not To Open The Door To ICE; Call CAIR For Help; Will You Protect, Hide Your Brothers And Sisters?
Abdullah Akl, an organizer with Within Our Lifetime and director of advocacy at MAS Staten Island Center, discussed the March 8 arrest of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil during Tarawih services at the Staten Island mosque on March 10, 2025. He condemned President Trump's statement "Shalom Mahmoud" in Hebrew, which claimed Khalil was antisemitic, while Akl argued that all Khalil did was stand up against the "genocide" in Gaza, like many of the worshipers at the mosque.
Akl stressed that it is time for the Muslim community to protect themselves by not cooperating with immigration officials and by knowing the number of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) by heart. He said that the MAS Staten Island Center will not cooperate with immigration officials. He also asked whether community members are willing to "hide" Muslim brothers and sisters and protect them "against all harm." He urged Muslims in America to learn from the people of Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, who "put their entire lives on the line." Akl called on participants to join a protest for Mahmoud Khalil, which was set to be held the following day.
Khalil was arrested for aligning with Hamas, a U.S. designated terror organization. For more about Mahmoud Khalil, see MEMRI TV clip no 11883.
It is worth noting that Abdullah Akl has participated in several protests where Hamas paraphernalia was brandished, as well as photos of assassinated members of U.S.-designated terrorist organizations, such as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Hizbullah military leader Fuad Shukr.
Abdullah Akl: "Just two days ago, Mahmoud Khalil, a student of Columbia University... In the middle of the night, Department of Homeland Security in collaboration with ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] raided his apartment.
[...]
"The reason why he was targeted, as the White House puts out just this morning, the White House puts his picture on the front cover in collaboration with the President of the United States, Donald Trump, mentioning 'Shalom Mahmoud.' This is the country that we live in, brothers and sisters. The President of the United States is saying goodbye in Hebrew to a young Columbian activist, a negotiator during the Columbia protests. Why? Because they claim that he was antisemitic when all he did was stand up against the genocide in Gaza, like many of, all of us, here today.
[...]
"Now more than ever it is time to protect ourselves as a community. It is time for us to know our rights. And you will be seeing it posted across our pages on our centers. Know your rights by not opening the door for immigration officials. Know your rights by understanding what it means to see a judge warrant. Know your rights by knowing the Council on American-Islamic Relations [CAIR] phone number like the back of your [hand].
[...]
"If immigration officials ever come to our door MAS Staten Island is prepared to tell them no.
[...]
"Are you of that community that is willing to hide, willing to sanction, willing to protect your brothers and sisters against all harm?
[...]
"As we look to Gaza, as we look to Syria, as we look to Lebanon, and we look to our countries. And we say that they are committing and putting their entire lives on the line. They are being tested, the true test. I ask you brothers and sisters, do you not think this is a test as well?
[...]
"Tomorrow there is a protest being held in lower Manhattan. It is against everything that the Trump administration and Mayor Eric Adams stands for. We stand with that protest."

Son of late shah urges Iranians to break with Islamic republic
Washington – The son of Iran's late shah appealed Friday to the country's security forces to abandon the cleric-run state, voicing hope for toppling the Islamic republic after Israel launched military strikes. Reza Pahlavi blamed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei for having 'dragged Iran into a war' with Israel and described the government in Tehran as 'weak and divided.' 'It could fall. As I have told my compatriots: Iran is yours and yours to reclaim. I am with you. Stay strong and we will win,' he said in a statement. 'I have told the military, police, and security forces: break from the regime. Honor the oath of any honorable serviceman. Join the people.' 'To the international community: do not throw yet another lifeline to this dying, terrorist regime,' he said. Pahlavi was crown prince in Iran's pro-Western monarchy, which collapsed in 1979 in a mass revolution that quickly brought to power the clerical establishment that declared an Islamic republic. Pahlavi, who lives in exile near Washington, says he is not necessarily looking for the restoration of the monarchy and wants to use his name to support the movement for secular democracy. Israel sees the Islamic republic as an existential threat but was allied with Iran under the late shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Reza Pahlavi has also enjoyed warm relations with Israel, which he toured two years ago. Iranian diaspora pro-monarchists, waving the old imperial flag, have figured prominently in protests in support of Israel since the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas. Pahlavi has repeatedly described the Islamic republic as frail, including after mass protests broke out in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by morality police who enforce modest dress on women.

US judge extends detention of pro-Palestinian protest leader
New York – Pro-Palestinian student protest leader Mahmoud Khalil remained in US detention Friday despite an expected release, his lawyer said, following reported accusations of inaccuracies in his permanent residency application. US District Judge Michael Fabiarz had issued an order Wednesday that the government could not detain or deport Khalil, a legal permanent resident, based on Secretary of State Marco Rubio's assertions that his presence on US soil posed a national security threat. The order gave the government until Friday to release Khalil. But by Friday afternoon, the Trump administration 'represented that the Petitioner is being detained on another, second charge,' the judge wrote. The Department of Homeland Security has provided the court with press clippings from various American tabloids suggesting Khalil, who is married to a US citizen, had failed to disclose certain information about his work or involvement in a campaign to boycott Israel when applying for his permanent resident green card, ABC News reported. 'The government is now using cruel, transparent delay tactics to keep him away from his wife and newborn son ahead of their first Father's Day as a family,' Khalil attorney Amy Greer said in a statement, referring to the US holiday observed on Sunday. 'Instead of celebrating together, he is languishing in ICE detention as punishment for his advocacy on behalf of his fellow Palestinians. It is unjust, it is shocking, and it is disgraceful.' Since his March 8 arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Khalil has become a symbol of President Donald Trump's willingness to stifle pro-Palestinian student activism against the Gaza war, in the name of curbing anti-Semitism. At the time a graduate student at New York's Columbia University, Khalil was one of the most visible leaders of nationwide campus protests against Israel's war in Gaza. Authorities transferred Khalil, who was born in Syria to Palestinian parents, nearly 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) from his home in New York to a detention center in Louisiana, pending deportation. His wife Noor Abdalla, a Michigan-born dentist, gave birth to their son while Khalil was in detention.
