Search continues for 30 missing after Bali ferry accident

SBS Australiaa day ago
Rescuers are searching for more than 30 people that remain missing in rough seas after a ferry sank near Bali, Indonesia. Indonesia's Search and Rescue agency says four bodies have been recovered and 30 people have been rescued, many of them unconscious after drifting in choppy waters for hours. The National Search and Rescue Agency says the ferry sank about half an hour after leaving East Java's Ketapang port, en route to Bali's Gilimanuk, a 50-kilometre trip. There were 53 passengers and 12 crew members aboard when the ferry sank. One survivor says it was a long and terrifying wait for rescue. "After the boat sunk I met two other people whom I eventually joined. Then another person joined, so there were four of us in total, each using a life jacket. Until this morning, one of us died while the other three survived." Search and Rescue say the search for the 30 missing people is being hampered by strong currents and winds, but they've deployed a helicopter to the location and 13 underwater rescuers. A man from Northern New South Wales has died after contracting an extremely rare, rabies-like bat virus. New South Wales Health confirmed the man in his 50s has died, after being bitten by a bat several months ago. The deceased was the first Australian bat lyssavirus case ever recorded in the state and only the fourth in the country. Bat lyssavirus transmits from infected bats to humans when virus in their saliva enters the body through a bite or scratch. It is extremely rare for the virus to transmit to humans because it does not spread through the air. There is no effective treatment. The alleged importers of a load of mosaic tiles have been accused of hiding $333 million worth of methamphetamine in a shipment from the Middle East. The shipment was intercepted by border authorities in Sydney in April leading to the arrests of three men who are now facing drug charges. Forensic testing found the 360 boxes in a storage facility in Chullora containing about 360kg of methamphetamine. Acting Commander for Australian Federal Police Peter Fogarty says the haul sends a strong message to criminals. "No matter how elaborate your attempts are to import illicit drugs into the community, the AFP and our partners have the skills, the experience and the technology to stop them. All we need is one opportunity and you face the prospect of spending a significant part of your life in a jail cell." Australia's arts community has welcomed the reinstatement of Lebanese Australian artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino as the country's representatives at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Creative Australia apologised to the artistic duo for dropping them from the globally renowned arts exhibition, over concerns regarding one of Mr Sabsabi's early works, which depicted a leader of Lebanese group Hezbollah. Creative Australia had feared including Mr Sabsabi could be divisive and jeopardise public support for the Australian arts community. The organisation reversed this decision after significant backlash. Sarah Mansour, a Lebanese Australian lawyer and artist, tells SBS Arabic she is relieved by the decision to reinstate the pair as Australia's representatives. 'Yeah, I am really elated. It's kind of reinstated my hope in the Australian private sector and creative Australia specifically. It's illustrated the importance of risk mitigation and risk management procedures. As an artist, I feel like my faith has been restored.' Aussie Jordan Thompson has fought his way through another five-set battle to earn a spot in the third round at Wimbledon. Thompson beat Benjamin Bonzi in five sets, taking the first set before losing in a second set tie-break and then dropping the third set. He then charged back to comfortably dominate the Frenchman in the fourth and fifth sets, winning out in just under four hours. The Sydneysider came into this championship wearing a brace for a niggling back injury. After the match, which lasted just under four hours, he tells Stan Sport had been brutal on his back.
"Yeah, well, I've adjusted my service technique, the way I position myself on return, obviously I think I've seen snails miove quicker than me on the court. So it's been really tough, but I've just been trying to take the game on and get to the net because I do feel like when I get to the net it doesn't really bother my back as much. so, just got to try and get there."

Wife of Bali shooting victim Zivan Radmanovic delivers letter

The wife of an Australian who was gunned down while holidaying in Bali has delivered a heartbreaking letter about the man she described as 'the best dad in the world'. Jazmyn Gourdeas allowed family lawyer Sary Latief to read out a handwritten letter at a press conference on Tuesday, in which she memorialised her husband and thanked the Indonesian police for all their help and support. 'My husband was a loving man and the best dad in the world, now I have the unimaginable (task) of going home to tell (the kids) that he's no longer here,' the letter read. 'Please respect our privacy so we can grieve his loss.' Addressing the media, Ms Latief said Ms Gourdeas was 'not coping very well with the tragedy'. '[She] doesn't have the appetite to eat, she's lost a lot of weight, she looks very pale, she's really worried, she wants to go home.' Zivan Radmanovic, 32, with his wife Gourdeas Jazmyn. Picture: Supplied Ms Latief said Ms Gourdeas' mother and brother had travelled to Indonesia to support her. Ms Gourdeas was a witness to the savage alleged killing, which took place when three men allegedly breached the entrance of a villa the couple had rented in celebration of her 30th birthday. While Ms Gourdeas hid from the attackers, Mr Radmanovic was allegedly badly beaten, before being shot and killed. Sanar Ghanim, 34, suffered wounds in the attack. Picture: Supplied Another man, Sanar Ghanim, was shot during the ordeal, but managed to escape. Ms Gourdeas is now a single mother of six children aged between 9 months and 13 years. A fundraiser has been launched for her by close family friend Jamie Lee. Ms Lee said the 'sudden and devastating loss' had shattered Ms Gourdeas, and the weight of single motherhood would begin to weigh on her without appropriate support. 'While only married for just under a year, the couple were deeply in love and shared a family together,' Ms Lee said. 'Now Jazmyn faces the unimaginable challenge of caring for their large family alone, including three children diagnosed with epilepsy who require ongoing medication, therapies and frequent medical appointments.' A GoFundMe has been set up for Jazmyn. Picture: Supplied The alleged premeditated murder happened on June 14 inside a villa that Mr Radmanovic and his wife had booked for their stay in Bali. The Indonesian Police have arrested three Australian men in connection with the alleged slaughter. 'We are certain these three are the perpetrators. They are Australian nationals according to their passports,' Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya said. According to Indonesian law, the men could face the death penalty if they are convicted of murder. The dramatic moment police saved the life of a woman after she became trapped in a unit which caught fire has been revealed, with officers smashing down walls in the burning building in order to rescue her. Emergency services were called to a unit on Percy St in Townsville's West End shortly after 9pm after reports a number of units were on fire. By the time police arrived, the fire had spread to a second unit, where a woman, 54, was living. In footage released by Queensland Police, the woman can be heard screaming as the fire engulfs her property, leaving her trapped inside. 'I just had someone screaming in here,' an officer says in the terrifying footage. One begins kicking the door to the unit, but when it fails to give way another officer to launches his body at the side of the wall, knocking it down. The woman can be heard yelling as police throw garbage bins out of the way. Officers cough and splutter as they tried to gain entry, with one saying they 'can't breathe' as smoke fills the property. Officers can be heard shouting: 'Where are you, dear?' and 'Follow me!' The woman was safely escorted from the unit by police. She suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Townsville University Hospital for treatment. The officers also sustained minor smoke inhalation and were treated at Townsville University Hospital. They have since been discharged. 'The cause of the fire is under investigation,' Queensland Police said in a statement, who are classifying it as 'suspicious'.
