Gujarat: Crackdown at alleged Bangladeshi settlement sparks concerns of displacement
The Gujarat government has intensified its crackdown on suspected illegal settlements following the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir last month, impacting Bangladeshi nationals residing near Chandola Lake in Ahmedabad. The area is often referred to as 'mini-Bangladesh' due to its significant population of illegal immigrants.
Launched on April 29 by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Gujarat police, authorities reclaimed over 1.5 lakh square yards of encroached land by Thursday.
'The operation marks Gujarat's firm stance against illegal settlements and anti-national elements,' said Sharad Singhal, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
The crackdown focused on multiple criminal networks operating in the area. Months ago, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had arrested four members of the banned Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) from the same area, according to Singhal. All four were Bangladeshi nationals, and their case is currently under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), he added.
Intelligence inputs suggest that terrorists from groups such as Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) and Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), recently released from prisons in Bangladesh, have been attempting to infiltrate India, according to Singhal. The demolition specifically targeted locations suspected of harboring such elements.
In addition to terror links, the area had become a hotspot for drug trafficking, with several cases involving Bangladeshi operatives, according to police. A major human trafficking and prostitution racket was also busted during the drive.
Over 70 earth movers, 200 dumpers, and 2,000 police personnel together razed approximately 4,000 illegal structures, including a 2,000-square-yard farmhouse linked to Mehmoodkhan Pathan, alias Lallu Bihari, who is accused of aiding illegal immigrants with forged documents, said a government official aware of the matter.
An FIR has been filed against him by the crime branch, and investigations continue to uncover ties to local politicians and police, highlighting his role in sustaining the illegal settlements for about one-and-a-half decade, the official added.
On Thursday, the AMC focused on clearing the remaining 40,000 square yards of illegal structures, deploying JCBs and dumpers with heavy police presence, the official said.
On April 30, the Gujarat cabinet, chaired by chief minister Bhupendra Patel, met to chart the future course of action for Chandola Lake. The cabinet, which includes home minister Harsh Sanghavi, approved a two-phase plan: first, completing the clearance of 40,000 square yards of illegal structures to restore the 2,965-acre water body under the Gujarat Land Revenue Code, and second, transforming the lake into a public amenity with potential green spaces and recreational facilities, backed by drone surveillance and police patrols to prevent re-encroachment.

Bengal CEO orders inquiry into voter with 'links' to Dhaka student unrest
The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has directed the District Electoral Officer (DEO) and district magistrate of South 24 Parganas district to enquire and report on a person who is reportedly listed as a voter in South 24 Parganas district's Kakdwip but at the same time was allegedly involved in Bangladesh's students' movement last August. "We have requested the concerned DEO and DM South 24 Parganas to enquire and report to us," WB-CEO Manoj Agarwal told ET. Several photographs of the alleged person, identified as Niutan Das , participating in the 2024 quota reform protests in Bangladesh, which toppled the Hasina government in Bangladesh, have reportedly surfaced online, people in the know said. Das has claimed Indian citizenship and has documents, including a PAN card and Aadhaar card, to support his claim, sources said. Das has claimed that he has Indian citizenship and had gone to Bangladesh and was caught during the protest. ET couldn't independently verify the authenticity of the photos, videos or the documents. "In 2024, I had to travel to Bangladesh in connection with our ancestral property and was caught up in the revolution there. I have been a voter in Kakdwip since 2014. Although I lost my voter card in 2017, I managed to get a new one in 2018 with help from local MLA Manturam Pakhira. I had cast my vote during the 2016 Bengal assembly elections," Niutan has claimed in a video message. He did not clarify if he resides in India or Bangladesh and if he is also a Bangladeshi citizen. Conflicting statements have emerged with Niutan Das's cousin, Tapan, telling media persons that Niutan was "born in Bangladesh and exercises voting rights in both countries. He came to India after the pandemic to sell some ancestral land and has stayed here since." A political slugfest began when a photograph of Niutan Das cutting a birthday cake in the presence of Trinamool's Sundarbans organisational district student wing president Debashis Das, came to the fore. Debasish clarified that he knew Niuton Das but had no idea that he was a Bangladeshi citizen. The authenticity of the video could not be ascertained by ET independently. "The photo going around was taken at a birthday celebration. I urge the authorities to investigate," he added.

Political Row Erupts After Man Linked To 2024 Bangladesh Protests Found On Bengal Voter List
Last Updated: The man, identified as Newton Das, reportedly took part in the 2024 protests in Bangladesh that triggered a regime change. He was found on the voter list in West Bengal's Kakdwip. A fresh political storm erupted in West Bengal after a person allegedly involved in last year's student-led protests in Bangladesh that resulted in the ouster of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina turned out to be a voter from the state's Kakdwip area. The man, identified as Newton Das, appeared in several images circulating on social media showing him taking part in the 2024 protests in Bangladesh, which triggered a regime change. The protests were triggered by a controversial quota system for government jobs. However, Newton insisted that he was an Indian citizen and showed documents, including a PAN card and Aadhaar card, to support his claim. However, he did not clarify on whether he lived in India or Bangladesh. 'Unexpectedly Got Caught Up' 'I had travelled to Bangladesh in 2024 for some issues related to our ancestral property, but I unexpectedly got caught up in the revolution there. I have been a voter in Kakdwip since 2014," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying in a video message. 'Although I lost my voter card in 2017, I managed to get a new one the following year with help from the local MLA, Manturam Pakhira. I also cast my vote during the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections." However, Newton's cousin Tapan offered a contradictory account, saying Newton was born in Bangladesh and exercises voting rights in both countries. 'Niutan was born in Bangladesh and holds voting rights in both countries. He came to India after the pandemic to sell some ancestral land and has stayed here since. He should be held responsible for registering as a voter in both places, that's clearly not right," Tapan told reporters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on the controversy, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of encouraging illegal immigration to manipulate electoral outcomes. 'This is the TMC blueprint — flood Bengal's voter rolls with illegal infiltrators and secure elections with ghost votes," the West Bengal BJP said on X. Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said, 'Another shining example of the so-called 'Egiye Bangla Model"! The same Newton who was seen wielding a stick during Bangladesh's quota reform movement is now a registered voter in Kakdwip, West Bengal!" 'Thousands of Bangladeshi 'Newtons" voting in Bengal—courtesy of Mamata Banerjee's infiltration theory and appeasement politics. With illegal voters and these lathi-wielders miscreants as her support base, she's not running West Bengal… she's scripting a blueprint for Greater Bangladesh," he added. Another shining example of the so-called 'Egiye Bangla Model"!The same Newton who was seen wielding a stick during Bangladesh's quota reform movement is now a registered voter in Kakdwip, West Bengal! Thanks to the special encouragement of the failed Chief Minister… — Dr. Sukanta Majumdar (@DrSukantaBJP) June 7, 2025 His statements were echoed by the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who said there are lakhs of Bangladeshi nationals who are included in the voter rolls of West Bengal. BJP Mathurapur organisational district secretary Sanjay Das alleged that 'the Trinamool Congress is actively helping Bangladeshi infiltrators to enter India. In response, the TMC rejected the allegations, shifting the blame to the Centre and the Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the Indo-Bangladesh border. 'Our state government will do its part, but it's up to the Union government to ensure security," TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said. Debashis Das, TMC's Sundarbans organisational district student wing president, was seen cutting cake with Das in a viral birthday party photo. " had no idea he was involved in the Bangladesh protests. The photo going around was taken at a birthday celebration with many people present. If someone like him managed to cross the border, it just shows the BSF isn't doing its job properly," he clarified.
