‘Pee-wee Herman' actor Paul Reubens hid shocking secret from documentary director until his death

New York Post28-05-2025

Paul Reubens did not tell his director, Matt Wolf, that he was dying from cancer.
The actor and comedian, who famously starred as Pee-wee Herman in the 1980s, passed away in 2023 at age 70.

Before his death, he gave over 40 hours of interviews on camera about his life and career for a two-part documentary, 'Pee-wee as Himself,' now streaming on HBO Max.
'I was scheduled to do a final interview with him the week after Paul Reubens passed away, and we had a conversation a week before he died,' Wolf told Forbes on Monday.
'I could tell something was up with his health, but I didn't understand the gravity of it,' the filmmaker shared. 'I had no reason to believe he was terminally ill, but we had a meaningful private conversation that gave me the assurances I needed to move forward with this film.'
'I left that conversation feeling like it was intense but not thinking too much about it,' Wolf continued. 'I found out on Instagram that he [had] died, along with the rest of the world; only a very small group of close friends were aware that he was dying.'

According to Wolf, they spoke about everything — Reubens' childhood, his complicated relationship with fame, his ambitions, his commitment to his alter-ego, his sexuality, his arrest — except the fact that he had been battling cancer for the past six years.
Wolf told the outlet that from the beginning, Reubens was eager to tell his story.

'When Paul and I met, he started the conversation the same way the film starts, saying, 'I want to direct a film myself, but everybody's advising me against it, and I don't understand why,'' Wolf recalled.

'I said, 'Well, I'm here to talk to you about directing a film, so why don't we get to know each other and see if we can conceive of an approach that would appeal to you.' That began a very long and involved process of communication, but in that initial meeting, I didn't relate to Paul as a fan.'
While Wolf admitted that he did not know at what point he felt Reubens trusted him, the star later remarked, 'At some point, you just have to take a leap of faith.''

'He took a leap of faith with me, and I'm grateful for it,' Wolf added.

Wolf told the outlet that he had a question that was never fully answered by Reubens during their lengthy sit-downs.
'It wasn't that I wanted an answer, but I was working chronologically through Paul's life in this epic interview, and we stopped before the arrest in Florida,' he explained, referring to the entertainer's 1991 detention for indecent exposure at an adult movie theater.
At the time, Reubens was handed a small fine, but the damage was incalculable. In 2001, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor possession of child pornography, which was reduced to an obscenity charge with probation. These are covered in the documentary's second part.

'Paul anecdotally discussed that because we had a digressive conversation for over 40 hours, but I wanted to go in more detail through his arrest step by step,' Wolf told the outlet.
'At the end of the film, I wanted to reflect with him, not only about his late career work, but also about how he felt having gone through the full interview about this process, if he did have all the perspective he thought he had, or if he had learned something about himself through the course of telling his full story. He had also been on the record and in the media discussing his second arrest.'
Wolf noted that it was important for the film to have Reubens' last words in his own voice, as well as for the film to end in his voice.
'The day after Paul Reubens died, I started reading the 1,500-page transcript of my interview with him, and I found significance and meaning and all sorts of things that I wouldn't have understood before,' said Wolf. 'I did encounter what are the last words of 'Pee-wee as Himself,' which were profound and moving to me, and they actually were the last things Paul said in the interview.'

'… All these different emotions, all these different influences and factors, stuff that I saw when I was little, I felt like I could somehow give that back,' Reubens reflected in the documentary. 'I felt like a good collector of it all. I was like a good vessel for it all.'
'Nothing would stop me,' he shared. 'Nothing would deter me that it would be pure in every way. And I think that's what it was. It's part of why I feel so proud of it. Because I delivered that. I've lived up to that. Not just for you, but for myself.'
Wolf told The Associated Press that in looking back at their final conversations, it was clear that Reubens was 'privately contemplating mortality.'

'I was aware that this was an extraordinary situation that was part of the story of the film and that the stakes were the highest I had ever experienced,' said Wolf.
'Pee-wee as Himself' premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Magnolia Pictures Acquires U.S. Rights To ‘It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley,' Amy Berg's Documentary On Late Ethereal-Voiced Musician

EXCLUSIVE: Magnolia Pictures has landed U.S. rights to It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg's portrait of the late musician who developed an adoring fan base before his untimely death at the age of 30. Magnolia plans to release the film theatrically (available in Dolby Atmos) on August 8. The documentary, which enjoys a 100 percent critics approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, will premiere on HBO and stream on HBO Max this winter, as part of the Music Box series created by Bill Simmons. More from Deadline Director Amy Berg On Her Jeff Buckley Documentary: Late Singer-Songwriter 'Brought So Much Love And Authenticity To His Music' – Sundance Studio 'The Case Against Adnan Syed' Director Amy Berg Strikes First-Look Deal With Fremantle New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern Docu 'Prime Minister' Acquired By Magnolia, HBO Docu Films & CNN Films After Prize-Winning Sundance Bow 'Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley's archives and intimate accounts from his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, Jeff's former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, and luminaries like Ben Harper and Aimee Mann, It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley illuminates one of modern music's most influential and enigmatic figures,' notes a release. 'His only studio album, Grace, was released to astounding reviews and challenged conventional ideas of genre and gender. His intimate and influential cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah' further catapulted him to fame. Still, under pressure to produce his second album, he retreated to Memphis to escape the spotlight and the ever-growing glare of the public eye. In a tragic accident, Buckley drowned in the Wolf River in Memphis in 1997, leaving behind an unfinished second album and a legion of devastated family, friends and fans.' Magnolia Pictures co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley said in a statement, 'With only one studio album, Jeff Buckley became a legend. Amy Berg has captured his brilliance and complexity in this incandescent film that no true fan can miss.' Berg's credits include the Academy Award-nominated Deliver Us From Evil (2006); West of Memphis (2012); Prophet's Prey (2015); the Emmy-nominated docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed (2019), and Janis: Little Girl Blue, her 2015 documentary about iconic singer Janis Joplin. 'I've spent practically my entire career trying to make this film which takes a very intimate look at one of the greatest singers and songwriters of all time,' Berg commented. 'I'm so excited Magnolia and HBO have come onboard to share this film with the world and give old fans and new audiences a chance to experience Jeff from this unique vantage point. I couldn't imagine a better team to roll this into the world!' A Topic Studios and Fremantle Film, It's Never Over: Jeff Buckley is produced by Ryan Heller (A Real Pain), Christine Connor (Nuclear Family), Mandy Chang (The Mona Lisa Curse), Matthew Roozen (A Mouthful Of Air), Jennie Bedusa (The Space Within) and Amy Berg. Executive producers are Mary Guibert, Alison Raykovich, Brian A. Kates, Michael Bloom, Jennifer Westin, Maria Zuckerman, Brad Pitt, and Ian Stratford. 'Working with Amy on this labor of love has been a gift,' said Topic Studios' Ryan Heller and Christine Connor. 'And we are delighted that our friends at Magnolia and HBO are joining us to help ensure that Jeff's remarkable story reaches the widest possible audience.' Mark Reynolds, Global Head of Documentaries & Factual, Fremantle, noted, 'We are delighted to have partnered with Amy Berg and Topic Studios on this deeply human and beautifully made film – with such intimate recollections of an artist who continues to inspire – honoring Jeff's legacy with the care and reverence it deserves. We're equally excited to be collaborating with Magnolia as our North American distributor to help share this powerful story with audiences.' The acquisition deal was negotiated by Magnolia Pictures SVP of Acquisitions John Von Thaden, with Submarine's Josh Braun, Dan Braun and Matt Burke on behalf of the filmmakers. It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to screen at festivals around the world including CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, the Sydney Film Festival in Australia, the Provincetown International Film Festival and Nantucket Film Festival – both in Massachusetts. Musician Ben Harper, who as noted above appears in the documentary, became friends with Buckley after they met at a rock festival in France. In an interview with Deadline at Sundance, he told us about the power of Buckley's voice. 'You just hadn't heard anything like it until he came along. It was as singular an instrument as has existed in the world of sound. As powerful and raw, it was equally as vulnerable and fragile. And to have those two counterpoints all within the same instrument was just something unheard of… To be that raw, but that elegant at the same time, and to be that powerful yet that fragile at the same time was just shocking.' At Sundance, Berg shared more about her long effort to make the Buckley documentary. 'I finally met up with Mary [Guibert, Jeff Buckley's mom] in 2010, but she didn't give me the rights for another nine years,' she told Deadline. 'But every time I finished a film, I would reach out to Mary. She did share the archive with me back then, and I was blown away by the voicemail messages and the DAT recordings and his candor, and I just kept at it. I always wanted to tell a love story about Jeff because he brought so much love and authenticity to his music. So, I chose people that had a real deep connection with him to be in the film. It's a love story that simply transcends time. ‘The White Lotus' Stars Walton Goggins And Aimee Lou Wood Reveal The Truth Behind Instagram ‘Feud'

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins Rick and Chelsea, the tragic lovers from the third season of HBO's The White Lotus, were fan favorites during the show's run earlier this year. The actors who played them also became the center of much gossip after the season came to a close. This was partly due to comments made by Jason Isaac, who played troubled investment banker Timothy Ratliff, in the third season. The cast lived on-set in Thailand for months during the shoot, and Isaac said that tensions could sometimes run high, noting that there were 'fewer deaths but just as much drama' behind the scenes. Rumors of a split between Walton Goggins, who played Rick, and Aimee Lou Wood, who played Chelsea, reached fever pitch when fans noticed that Goggins had unfollowed his co-star on Instagram. Fandom is always thirsty for this kind of drama, but perhaps especially so for a series like The White Lotus, which is all about scandal, betrayal and the woes of the rich and famous. There was blood in the water, and the sharks came circling. Goggins also didn't join his fellow cast members at the finale event, watching it alone instead, though he was in New York for a late-night appearance at the time. I never commented on these rumors. Tawdry gossip has never been something I feel the need or desire to comment on. Gossip journalism is certainly big business, but it's not my cup of tea. I am happy, however, to report on the outcome. In a lengthy interview with the two co-stars over at Variety, they clear the air and put the rumors to bed once and for all. After a discussion of the infamous SNL sketch that mocked Wood's appearance, and Goggins' regret at posting about it on social media, they clear the air. From the interview: He also addressed the NYT interview in which he refused to answer multiple questions about the supposed feud, saying he wouldn't answer them without Wood present. When Wood is asked about the Instagram unfollowing she replies: Goggins makes it clear that saying farewell to co-stars is just part of his process. When he left the show Justified "I went up to Tim [Olyphant], and I hugged him and I said, 'I love you, and I hope I see you in rooms for the rest of my life. I didn't talk to him for almost two years. I've done that with every single thing that I've done.' He continues: It's all part of his 'catharsis' according to Goggins. He would have done the same thing if he'd been following Olyphant or his The Shield co-star Michael Chiklis on Instagram at the time. Still, during the interview he gets up, grabs his phone and follows Wood on Instagram. 'It's all so ridiculou. It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for *#$&ing ever.' Read the full interview at Variety. Read my review of the Season 3 finale of The White Lotus here. So now that the rumors have been put to bed, can we talk about something important again? Like where we think the next season of The White Lotus will take place? I'm hoping it's Africa or maybe Eastern Europe. Or perhaps somewhere in South America or Mexico. It's a big world, after all.
