Preview: Bristol City's Everest
Good evening and welcome to live coverage of the second leg of the first Championship play-off final between Sheffield United and Bristol City from Bramall Lane. Given that it starts with the Blades 3-0 up from the first leg at Ashton Gate in a victory defined by Rob Dickie's sending off, a justified decision in the considered opinion of the former professionals on Sky's punditry panel and one with which this author would agree, I have been trawling through the 38 years of play-off history to try to find some solace for Liam Manning's side tonight.
And unfortunately there is no example of overcoming a three-goal deficit away from home in the second leg. Sheffield Wednesday came back from 4-0 down at London Road to beat Peterborough 5-1 at home in the League One semi two years ago, Bradford City beat Blackpool 3-0 at Bloomfield Road having lost 2-0 at Valley Parade in 1996 also at that level and Yeovil, remarkably, came back from losing 2-0 against Nottingham Forest at Huish Park to win 5-2 at the City Ground in 2007 but there's nothing exactly like the mountain facing Bristol City tonight.
Manning's side have scored three on the road only once this season in their 3-1 victory over Preston North End but twice scored four at home. Sheffield United have conceded three goals twice at home, in their 3-0 defeat by Hull and 3-1 by Leeds United in January and February respectively but United are at full strength and the visitors are going to have to try to do something that's never been done without both Dickie and the midfielder Joe Williams who rattled the crossbar at Ashton Gate before having to limp off.
Still, in the words of the actor and broadcaster Dean Smith summing up the unpredictability of the most competitive and exciting league in Europe, 'the Championship's gonna Championship'. What seems implausible in other divisions happens frequently in this one. But even so… surely not tonight.

Chelsea to make improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after £29.5m bid was rejected
Chelsea are to make an improved offer for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens after their opening £29.5m bid was rejected. Dortmund want somewhere in the region of £40m for the former Manchester City youth prospect. The Blues are hoping to sign him before Tuesday's deadline to play in the Club World Cup and are prepared to offer a seven-year contract. City hold a 10 per cent sell-on clause for the 20-year-old, who left the club's academy in 2020 for Dortmund. Gittens, who also had brief spells at Chelsea and Reading as a youngster, made his senior debut in the Bundesliga days after his 18th birthday. He has racked up 106 appearances since, scoring 17 goals. Although, his breakout campaign came this past season, over the course of which he scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 48 games. Chelsea have also offered £12.6m for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Meanwile, Arsenal are finalising the £5m signing of Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga. Chelsea are interested in a number of defensive options, including Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi. As well as Guehi, Chelsea remain keen on Jorrel Hato of Ajax. The highly rated centre-back made his senior debut at just 16 years old and became an undisputed starter for the Eredivisie side last season. Now 19, Hato has been appointed as one of Ajax's vice-captains, and was named Eredivisie Talent of the Year in 2024-25.

Wrexham line up move for Tottenham star as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his squad for the Championship
Wrexham want Ben Davies despite Tottenham exercising their option to extend the defender's contract by 12 months at the weekend. Davies has been a Spurs player since 2014 and he featured in 28 games under Ange Postecoglou last season, despite not being a member of the manager's first-choice XI. Davies has played 358 games for Tottenham in total, operating both as a left back and a central defender. He is a popular member of the dressing room and especially close to captain Son Heung-min. Davies recently saw his contract extended until June 2026, which means Wrexham would likely need to pay Spurs a modest transfer fee to land him this summer. Tottenham's willingness to let Davies leave could depend on whether or not they are successful in their attempts to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Spurs are expected to formalise their interest in 22-year-old Branthwaite next week. Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson looks set for a busy summer following his side's promotion from League One to the Championship. Davies has never played below the top tier of English football, having been a Premier League player for his entire club career to date. The 32-year-old made 71 Premier League appearances for Swansea between 2012 and 2014. He has played a further 242 Premier League games for Spurs.

Football Foundation funds scholarship in memory of Stephen Lawrence
A new scholarship programme commemorating the memory of Stephen Lawrence is to be funded by the Football Foundation, with the aim of supporting black students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to train as architects and help develop more inclusive infrastructure for the national game. The Stephen Lawrence Scholarship has been developed in conjunction with Greenwich University and will see one student each academic year provided with a fee waiver for the establishment's MArch Architecture programme. The recipient of the scholarship will also work with the Football Foundation outside their studies. Stephen Lawrence aspired to become an architect before he was murdered in a racist attack in the south London neighbourhood of Eltham in 1993 at the age of 18. He was also a keen Manchester United supporter and his mother, Doreen Lawrence, said the scholarship would be a 'meaningful continuation' of his legacy. 'Through the Stephen Lawrence Scholarship, Stephen's legacy will continue to inspire and empower future generations, ensuring that his vision for equality, opportunity and justice lives on,' said Lady Lawrence, who holds an honorary doctorate at the university. '[It] will provide opportunities for the next generation and reinforce the vital role that education and sport can play in transforming communities.' The Football Foundation works to improve grassroots facilities in the sport, with an emphasis on 'where the need is greatest and the greatest impact will be made'. It is funded by the Premier League, Football Association and UK government. Robert Sullivan, the organisation's chief executive, said the scholarship would form part of its work to lower barriers to entry in the sport. 'This initiative is the perfect legacy as we work to plan, design and construct facilities that target and support groups and communities who have faced barriers in terms of participation,' Sullivan said. 'This includes lower socioeconomic groups and culturally and ethnically diverse communities. These facilities provide not only a great place to play but also a safe space for communities to come together, where people can meet and build friendships.' A lack of representation for black and minority ethnic people within football continues to be an issue for the game. In 2022, data recorded by the Black Footballers Partnership found that 43% of players in the Premier League were black but only 4.4% of former players were in managerial roles in England. Meanwhile, only 1.6% of executive and leadership roles at men's clubs were held by black people. Paul Elliott, the vice-chair of Charlton, which sits in the borough of Greenwich, helped to broker the scholarship deal. A long-term activist for racial equality in football, the former Celtic and Chelsea defender said: 'This partnership between the University of Greenwich and the Football Foundation is a powerful example of what can be achieved when shared values and vision come together. 'It has been a personal honour to help bring these organisations together in Stephen Lawrence's name – uniting his passion for football with our collective commitment to creating inspiring spaces and life-changing opportunities for young people. Through the Stephen Lawrence Scholarship, we not only honour his legacy, but actively build on it, empowering a new generation.'
