Play-off exit has to be a 'lesson'

Bristol City head coach Liam Manning says the club's play-off exit to Sheffield United has to be a "lesson". The Robins were beaten 6-0 on aggregate across two legs by the Blades, with Monday's 3-0 defeat at Bramall Lane confirming they will remain in the Championship for appearance in the play-offs marked the first time Bristol City had finished in the top six of the second tier since 2008, when they lost to Hull City in the final at Wembley."I'm hugely proud of the lads for what they've done this year and tonight has to be a lesson for us," Manning told BBC Radio Bristol."Credit to players, staff, the fans were phenomenal again in terms of travelling all this way knowing it's such a difficult one."I think everyone's created that buzz around the club and for everybody we should be proud of what we've done. Of course there's things we can get better at but we've made huge progress I think in the past 18 months." Bristol City went into the second leg of their play-off tie with a mountain to climb after losing 3-0 in Thursday's opening game with Rob Dickie being sent off before and captain Jason Knight both lamented the way Bristol City conceded three of the six goals from set pieces. Kieffer Moore's opening header and Gus Hamer's shot in the second leg both came following corners, with Hamer also scoring from a corner in the first."It's definitely not the way you wanted to go out. I think [there was] maybe a bit of naivety in the two legs, three set pieces conceded - you're never going to get anywhere with that, I know they're a big unit of a team but it's certainly not the way we should be conceding goals," Knight told BBC Radio Bristol. "When we look back at the goals it's probably more us giving them the opportunities than them making it, so that's disappointing."Getting into the play-offs was never easy so we don't want to get too down about it but you want to raise the standard constantly and we know over the two legs we certainly weren't at it really."Knight echoed Manning's sentiment that the experience had to be built on over the summer. "This is just a learning, a lot of younger lads in there have not made many appearances so this is going to be big for the club, it's going to be big for us going forward and we're just going to have to take it as that," he said."[It's] obviously disappointing now but it's a season of real progress and we just want to keep moving forward."

Check out the best sites and offers first. 6:30PM Preview: Bristol City's Everest Good evening and welcome to live coverage of the second leg of the first Championship play-off final between Sheffield United and Bristol City from Bramall Lane. Given that it starts with the Blades 3-0 up from the first leg at Ashton Gate in a victory defined by Rob Dickie's sending off, a justified decision in the considered opinion of the former professionals on Sky's punditry panel and one with which this author would agree, I have been trawling through the 38 years of play-off history to try to find some solace for Liam Manning's side tonight. And unfortunately there is no example of overcoming a three-goal deficit away from home in the second leg. Sheffield Wednesday came back from 4-0 down at London Road to beat Peterborough 5-1 at home in the League One semi two years ago, Bradford City beat Blackpool 3-0 at Bloomfield Road having lost 2-0 at Valley Parade in 1996 also at that level and Yeovil, remarkably, came back from losing 2-0 against Nottingham Forest at Huish Park to win 5-2 at the City Ground in 2007 but there's nothing exactly like the mountain facing Bristol City tonight. Manning's side have scored three on the road only once this season in their 3-1 victory over Preston North End but twice scored four at home. Sheffield United have conceded three goals twice at home, in their 3-0 defeat by Hull and 3-1 by Leeds United in January and February respectively but United are at full strength and the visitors are going to have to try to do something that's never been done without both Dickie and the midfielder Joe Williams who rattled the crossbar at Ashton Gate before having to limp off. Still, in the words of the actor and broadcaster Dean Smith summing up the unpredictability of the most competitive and exciting league in Europe, 'the Championship's gonna Championship'. What seems implausible in other divisions happens frequently in this one. But even so… surely not tonight.

Williams and Dickie unavailable for play-off second leg

Bristol City will be without midfielder Joe Williams and suspended centre-back Rob Dickie for Monday's play-off semi-final second leg against Sheffield United. Williams hobbled off after 40 minutes of Thursday's 3-0 defeat at Ashton Gate in the first leg. "Joe [is a] bad one, snapped a couple of ankle ligaments. It's incredible the fact that he tried to play on for a few more minutes and did a 40-yard sprint before coming off," boss Liam Manning told BBC Radio was shown a straight red card in added time at the end of the first half for a challenge on Blades forward Kieffer Moore and the Robins' appeal against his sending off has been unsuccessful meaning he is said there was a possibility Cameron Pring and Harry Cornick "could get minutes" after being unused substitutes on Thursday has appeared in only three games this season due to injury, while Pring has been out with a hamstring injury."Pringy and Corns had an extra few days and are in a better spot than what they were for the home game," Manning said.

Liam Manning references U's red as Chris Wilder gains upper hand in play-offs

CHRIS Wilder gained the upper hand over Liam Manning in the battle of the former Oxford United bosses in the Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-finals. Sheffield United took control of the tie with a 3-0 first leg victory at Bristol City, who were controversially reduced to 10 men when former U's centre back Rob Dickie was sent off in first half stoppage time and the game still goalless. Dickie brought down Blades striker Kieffer Moore, who was through on goal, and was shown a straight red card. The Robins were then dealt a further blow as Harrison Burrows converted form the penalty spot to give the Blades a 1-0 lead at the break. Blades substitutes Andre Brooks and Callum O'Hare each scored in the space of six second half minutes to put the visitors in a commanding position ahead of the second leg. Former United head coach Manning was left frustrated by the decision to send off Dickie, with Oliver Langford the same referee who showed red cards to Joe Williams and Ross McCrorie when the Robins drew 1-1 at the Kassam Stadium in February. Manning told Sky Sports: 'I think it's a disgrace to be honest. We even called Kevin Friend [former referee] this week to raise our concerns. 'If you look, we had him at Oxford and got a decision wrong. Luton and Coventry, another decision wrong. You just know it's going to happen. That's the frustration. 'Rob kicks the ball, so I don't get how there's a decision made like that. 'Whether he pulls him first to then get the ball, I think it's one of those there's clear contact from Rob. 'We didn't defend well enough to stop it getting into that area. It's not a case of throwing the blame elsewhere. 'Rob pulls him, but makes a clear attempt to play the ball, so for me, worst case is he gives a penalty.' "I think it's a DISGRACE!" 😡 Bristol City head coach Liam Manning was NOT HAPPY with the decision to send Rob Dickie off 😳 — Sky Sports Football (@SkyFootball) May 8, 2025 Wilder said of the red card: 'Of course, there's a big turning point in the game. To get that first goal and for them to go down to 10 men put us in a good place. 'I don't think he made an attempt to play the ball. He just dragged him back. 'It swings the game in our favour, but there's still a job to do. They sat back and we had to find those moments, as well as doing our defensive work diligently.' Wilder added: 'I've been in the game far too long to know that even now when everybody will be thinking it's job done, it isn't. 'The players have got to produce another professional performance and compete. 'They've got nothing to lose, and everyone will be writing them off at Bramall Lane. 'But that's a dangerous situation for us to be in and we've got to absolutely go full tilt in this game.'
