Kota: City-based self-taught fashion designer Usha Kanwar, who began her career stitching low-cost kurtis and sarees for local clients, has designed a handcrafted Rajputi Poshak for Miss India Grand winner Vishakha for the pageant's cultural round last month.
With no formal training in fashion, Usha started her journey seven years ago in a small room, relying solely on her skills and determination. Her latest work brought Rajasthan's heritage to the national stage. The outfit was entirely handmade, featuring motifs of peacocks, royal architecture, and traditionally dressed women. Each detail was created through labour-intensive handwork, without the use of machines, over a span of more than three months.
"This dress was more than just attire — it embodied Rajasthan's culture and craftsmanship," Usha said. "I didn't study fashion. I studied struggle, self-respect, and the richness of my roots. My journey is proof that a woman doesn't need permission to dream — just the courage to begin."
Usha's achievement is notable for its blend of tradition and personal grit. Starting from limited means, she has carved a place in the fashion world through dedication to her craft.
