Johor eyes RCEP firms with Asean Industrial Park plan as investments hit RM30.1bil
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Johor is planning to establish an Asean Industrial Park within the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), targeting companies from Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) countries, Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced today.
He said the initiative aims to position Johor as a strategic gateway for RCEP investors seeking high-impact growth in Southeast Asia.
The proposal was unveiled at the Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025, where Onn Hafiz also revealed Johor recorded RM30.1 billion in approved investments in the first quarter of this year alone, outpacing its total nine-month performance in 2024.
"This is not just about Johor being football champions. Johor is now an investment champion," he said.
"RM30.1 billion in Q1, up from RM4.1 billion a year ago, shows deep investor trust and reflects the strength of our fundamentals."
Onn Hafiz credited federal support, close cooperation with Singapore and a no-nonsense facilitation approach as key factors behind the surge.
Through the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre–Johor (IMFC-J) and the Johor Super Lane (JSL), the state has implemented fast-track approvals for strategic investments, cutting processing time from three months to as little as one day.
"In five months, IMFC-J processed 439 enquiries, facilitated 57 potential investments worth RM26.18 billion, and secured RM16.71 billion in committed deals. This is real efficiency. This is Johor redefining facilitation," he said.
He also said that mobility and talent development were critical to maintaining momentum.
Reiterated that connectivity remains a critical pillar, he said Johor is powering ahead with major projects including the
Johor Baru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is on track for completion by end-2026.
Other projects are the Gemas–Johor Baru Electric Train Service (ETS) double-tracking, operational by year-end,the Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART), and the North-South Expressway expansion and Senai–Desaru Expressway.
To ensure human capital keeps pace, the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC) is working to deliver 10,000 job-ready graduates by 2026 in key JS-SEZ sectors, including smart manufacturing, semiconductors, digital infrastructure, and renewable energy.
Onn Hafiz said the workforce planning is embedded from the outset of every investor engagement, supported by six public universities and 15 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres.
Addressing Japanese investors directly, Onn Hafiz said Japan has long played a starring role in Malaysia's economic development, and called on Japanese and RCEP partners to co-develop the proposed Asean Industrial Park in Johor.
He thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his support in elevating Johor's regional profile and championing the JS-SEZ initiative.
He also acknowledged Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB) and Nikkei Inc. for choosing Johor to host the prestigious global forum.
"Johor is making history - and the world is watching," he said.
Themed Driving Asia's Innovation Hub, the two-day Nikkei Forum Medini Johor 2025 gathered more than 800 delegates in person and online, further cementing Johor's emergence as a rising force in the regional economic landscape.

Japan to aid Johor's rapid economic development
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Japan is ready to support Johor in easing traffic congestion as the state prepares for rapid economic development, says Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata. He said that addressing congestion was essential for the state as it anticipates significant economic growth with the rapid progress of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). 'Japan is eager to collaborate with Johor by offering cutting-edge solutions, including smart transportation systems and quality infrastructure development. 'By employing Japan's artificial intelligence-driven traffic control systems and digitally optimised public transportation networks, we aim to support Johor in overcoming serious traffic congestion,' he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the Nikkei Forum. He said that traffic jams not only hamper economic activities, but also waste energy, harm the environment and increase the risk of accidents. 'We hope to cooperate with Johor in becoming a model smart city for transportation solutions, not only in Kuala Lumpur or Johor, but also other megacities in Asean and beyond that are facing traffic congestion issues,' he said. He said the upcoming Rapid Transit System Link, along with the proposed Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit system, are key to improving public transportation in Johor. On another matter, Shikata also noted that there have been extensive discussions on new green investments in Malaysia, which have resulted in concrete expressions of interest. 'Johor is also emerging as a vital hub for data centres, and these facilities require substantial energy for cooling, presenting a significant environmental challenge. 'In this regard, Japan's liquefied natural gas cooling technology offers an environmentally friendly and efficient solution. 'By adapting this technology, data centres in Johor can significantly improve energy efficiency, reduce their environmental impact and enhance operational performance,' he said. Meanwhile, Invest Johor chief executive officer Natazha Harris said Johor is well-equipped with the necessary frameworks and support systems to welcome more Japanese investments. He said that elements crucial to Japanese investors, particularly talent development and policy consistency, are already in place in Johor. 'For talent, we already have the Johor Talent Development Council, which includes collaboration between academia and industry. 'And on the policy side, we have the Johor Super Lane and the Invest Malaysia Facilitation Centre Johor. 'We already have many things to offer. Now it's a matter of ramping up promotion,' he said when met on the sidelines of the forum here in Medini. He said Invest Johor is focusing its efforts on real projects and partnerships that showcase ongoing progress on the ground. 'These initiatives are not just theoretical, they are already being implemented. 'We have strong case studies to highlight, particularly in Kulai under the Kulai Fastlane, and now with the rollout of the Johor Superlane,' he added. Natazha said the two-day forum here was a good platform for Japanese investors to learn more about what the state has to offer. 'Japanese companies already have a presence in Johor even before the forum. 'Now, interest is growing stronger as Japanese companies have more clarity about what Johor has to offer, on top of the ecosystem already in place. This helps us tell our story to a wider audience, especially with the added leverage from the JS-SEZ,' he said. During the closing ceremony here, Invest Johor also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Yokohama-based listed technology company NEOJAPAN Inc. Natazha said the MoU marks the start of a strategic collaboration to establish the South-East Asian Centre of Excellence (SEA CoE) within the JS-SEZ. 'Through this initiative, Johor aims to position itself as a leading Asean hub for digital transformation by promoting the JS-SEZ as a base for cutting-edge innovation and talent development. 'As part of the effort, the SEA CoE is expected to train over 1,000 local talents in cloud infrastructure, multilingual IT support, and no-code development, while creating 300 high-skilled jobs in the region,' he said.

Alphard goes viral after allegedly selling strawberries in boot
A Toyota Alphard has recently gone viral after a short video on Threads showed the luxury vehicle parked with its boot wide open—allegedly selling strawberries. In the video, a long line of customers could be seen queueing under the hot sun, eager to get their hands on the fresh produce. A Mont Kiara signboard in the background confirmed the upscale location. 'RM500,000+ car selling strawberries. Mont Kiara is really different,' the caption read. The viral clip quickly drew attention online, with many netizens applauding the seller's unconventional hustle. 'Folks from the area are just lining up to pick up their preordered strawberries—and why not? It's a lot cheaper and fresher than what you get off supermarket shelves. I think this was a model that started during the Covid-19 days and just never stopped. Pretty sure other farms are doing the same thing,' commented user clairekhoo. ALSO READ: Once a pastime, car boot sale now source of income 'Hardworking and humble in earning a living. This is the kind of attitude we should all normalise,' praised damien_mikeng. Another user chimed in with a throwback: 'What's there to be so surprised about? Loads of people sell by the roadside using cars like this.
