Marcus Fraser demands instant Premier Sports Cup response for St Mirren

Daily Record12 hours ago
The Buddies defender wants the older heads in the dressing room to do more on the park after being left disappointed against Abroath on Saturday.
Marcus Fraser knows St Mirren are in must-win territory at Forfar Athletic tonight.
The Buddies are looking to bounce back immediately in the Premier Sports Cup when they face League Two Loons after being held to a goalless draw on Saturday at Arbroath, who claimed the bonus point thanks to a 5-3 victory on penalties.

It was a performance that stumped manager Stephen Robinson who insisted it was a team he 'didn't recognise'.

Experienced defender Fraser has echoed his gaffer's comments – admitting he and the older players in the dressing room should be doing more on the park.
'We were frustrated with the outcome on Saturday,' the 31-year-old said. 'Arbroath frustrated us and tried to hit us on the break. But we could have been much better middle to front to break them down.
'The manager said he was expecting more from the older boys to lead that and find a way through. That's on us as players. Through pre-season, we've worked on how to break teams down that sit deeper and it's not worked.
'We've got another three games and we've got to have a positive mind set. We know it's not over and we go into Tuesday knowing we need to win.'
Saturday's result means Saints will be gunning for a hat-trick of victories over Forfar, Annan Athletic and Ayr United to progress to the last 16.
Fraser knows it is a quickfire group stage – and that is why the Loons can't be taken lightly when they pitch up at Station Park this evening.

'We need to look at ourselves,' he said. 'We need to move the ball sharper and quicker and everyone understands that. After the manager finished his talk, we discussed it ourselves and that's the great thing about this group.
'It recognises when things aren't right and everyone stands up to that. We know we need to put things right.
'This group stage of this cup competition is so short that you need to put the points on the board early. We need to play much better. It might be a similar game, with Forfar sitting in.

'It isn't going to be easy and our older boys need to demand more – myself included.'
Youngster Fraser Taylor came off the bench against the Smokies, for whom he starred on loan last season, and won the League One player of the year award after helping them to the title and a return to the Championship.
However, it was a return he will want to forget after his spot-kick in the shoot-out was saved with Calum Gallagher clinching it for Arbroath.

Fraser insists the squad knows how talented Taylor is and that he will recover from his penalty setback.
He said: 'Fraz was player of the year at Arbroath last season and got numerous goals and assists. He's got a bright future ahead of him and nine times out of 10, Fraz sticks that penalty away.
'The next pen, I know he'll step up and put it away. He'll be fine. He can be a big player for us this season. He's got everything in his locker.'

Danilo stars as Rangers beat fellow SPFL club in closed doors friendly a week ahead of Panathinaikos showdown

Russell Martin's side face Greek giants Panathinaikos in the first leg of their crunch Champions League qualifier next Tuesday. That meeting is at Ibrox, with the two sides doing battle again in their second qualifying round tie in Greece the following week. It's been a busy summer of transfer activity for the Gers with seven new recruits, as well as the permanent addition of Oscar Cortes. Djeidi Gassama is the latest arrival, having sealed his £2.2million witch from Sheffield Wednesday today. New winger Gassama didn't start as the Gers faced Championship outfit Dunfermline - managed by Celtic legend Neil Lennon - in a behind closed doors friendly clash. Having drawn with both Club Brugge and Barnsley, the Gers got a win on the board this time around with a 4-1 victory. With question marks around the futures of Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, Danilo has been given the chance to show what he can do during pre-season. Neither Dessers or Igamane are understood to have featured in the game, with both still working their way back to full fitness. After scoring the Gers' goal in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Barnsley, the £6million Brazilian striker was involved in all four of the Light Blues' strikes against the Pars. New Rangers chiefs Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe's first interview He scored one and set up the other three. The other scorers for Russell Martin's side were Kieran Dowell, Thelo Aasgaard and Nico Raskin. Dowell has featured heavily during pre-season despite the anticipation that he would likely be moving on. Rangers' starting XI from the game could provide a nod to how head coach Martin will approach things against Panathinaikos next week. Jack Butland started in goals in front of a back four of James Tavernier, John Souttar, Nasser Djiga and Max Aarons. Joe Rothwell anchored a midfield three of himself, Nico Raskin and Mo Diomande. Danilo led the line with Dowell and Thelo Aasgaard in behind him. Djiga, Aarons, Rothwell and Aasgaard were the new recruits who started the match. With the Gers not blessed with too much depth in the wide areas, it is perhaps likely Gassama will come straight into the starting XI next week. Rangers leadership group revealed as Russell Martin flips the script on one transfer assumption

The new boss has shared details on his four key lieutenants in the dressing room and one may take you by surprise When a new manager comes into a football club it can hand players who struggled under the previous regime a clean slate. ‌ And that appears to be the case for forgotten midfielder Kieran Dowell at Rangers. ‌ The 27-year-old was brought to Ibrox by Michael Beale in the summer of 2023 but went onto make just 16 appearances in total in his first season, with Phillippe Clement replacing Beale less than four months after Dowell 's arrival. ‌ The former Everton youngster has been plagued with injury problems since heading north of the border but saw his minutes further restricted by Clement last season, so much so that he headed out to Birmingham City on loan back in January to get back on track. Dowell - an U20 World Cup winner with England - impressed with the EFL League One club, scoring five times in 19 league matches as the Blues romped to the title to secure immediate promotion back to the Championship. And while the playmaker and teammate Ben Davies - who also spent time on loan at Birmingham last season - were both expected to rejoin the big-spending West-Midlands club on a permanent basis, Dowell looks to have been handed a lifeline at Ibrox by new boss Russell Martin. The midfielder has featured in all three of the Light Blues friendly fixtures so far and scored in a 4-1 behind-closed doors win against Dunfermline on Tuesday. And Dowell's potentially important role in the new regime has been eluded to by his manager, with Martin including the player in a small group inside the dressing room who have been key in welcoming the raft of summer signings into the club. ‌ Speaking to the media at the England national team's St George's Park training complex on Tuesday, he said: "It's quite a quiet dressing room. There are a lot of people from different backgrounds and there are a lot of young guys. "But they have spent a lot of time together here and it is getting noisier. There is more noise, smiles and laughs coming out from the games and they are also digging in together. "When they have to run and work hard together, they are holding each other accountable in training. You could hear that today on the training pitch and that was so different to where we were two and a half weeks ago in terms of the noise. ‌ "The aggression and the way they compete is fantastic and we have to keep asking and driving for that. "But the guys who have came in have been great as we knew the characters we were bringing in. "The senior group of Tav (James Tavernier), Jack (Butland), Kieran Dowell and John Souttar are good guys and they have welcomed them and make sure they fell part of it. "Even if they are not really noisy they have done it in their own way, which is important."
