UFC 318: Max Holloway, Dustin Poirier weigh in on Islam Makhachev's move to welterweight

USA Today17-07-2025
NEW ORLEANS – Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier gave their breakdown on how Islam Makhachev does at 170 pounds.
Holloway (26-8 MMA, 22-8 UFC) defends his BMF title against Dustin Poirier (30-9 MMA, 22-8 UFC) in a trilogy bout, which headlines Saturday's UFC 318 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) event at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Now permanently at 155 pounds, Holloway thinks former champion Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) will do well at a weight class above, but thinks UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) won't be an easy fight for him.
"I think he'll be fine. I think he'll be good, but people be sleeping on Jack," Holloway said during Wednesday's media day. "I think Jack is one of the best fighters in the world right now, and I think people are going to find that out when that match happens. I'm hearing rumors maybe October. I think it's going to be a fun fight, smart fight, but a lot of people counting out Jack for I don't know what reason.
"They keep counting him out. It kind of reminds me of when I was coming up, and (people) counting me out in a bunch of different fights. I mean, (Makhachev) is the No. 2 pound-for-pound in the world right now, but he's the No. 2 pound-for-pound for a reason, so you've got to respect that. But don't sleep on Jack. I think it's going to be a tough and fun fight."
Poirier fought Makhachev for the lightweight title at UFC 302. He was submitted in Round 5, and expects Makhachev to have success at welterweight.
"He's a big guy," Poirier said. "I think he's going to fill into that weight. He's a really big 155'er. His lifestyle outside of training camp is going to be a little bit more comfortable, and he'll fill into that weight class no problem. He could be champion there for sure.
"I think the beginning of the fight is going to tell the story, like how well JDM does getting up, how well JDM does at keeping Islam off of his legs, off of the cage. It's tough to call that because JDM is a big guy, athletic. I'm excited about that – a lot of fun fights in the future."

F1: How to Watch and Stream the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix

With just eight points separating the McLaren duo at the top of the Drivers Championship, this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix looks set to provide a pivotal moment in the battle for the 2025 F1 title. Below, we'll outline the best live TV streaming services to use to watch the race as it happens, wherever you are in the world, and how to use a VPN if it's not available where you are. Back-to-back wins for Lando Norris at the Red Bull Ring and at Silverstone have whittled down Oscar Piastri's lead at the top of the Drivers' Championship to single digits, with the momentum now firmly resting with Norris coming into this weekend's action at Belgium's Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps racetrack. Famously regarded by the late F1 legend Ayrton Senna as his favorite circuit, Spa runs 7km long, making it the longest track on the calendar. With its 19 corners and dramatic elevation changes, it's one of the most thrilling tracks for spectators and drivers alike. The Belgian GP takes place at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Stavelot on Sunday, July 27, at 3 p.m. CEST local time in Belgium. Starting time in the US and Canada is 9 a.m. ET (6 a.m. PT). In the UK it's 2 p.m. BST. Australian viewers will be looking at an 11 p.m. AEST start. The entire race weekend, including practice sessions and qualifying, will be shown in the US on ESPN's family of TV and streaming networks. Folks who want to follow the whole race weekend will need access to the ABC and ESPN news channels on cable or live TV streaming services, or the ESPN Plus streaming service. We've broken down everything you need to know, including how to use a VPN to stream the race, and all the other F1 races this season. Lewis Hamilton won last season's Belgian Grand Prix after his then-Mercedes teammate George Russell was disqualified for having an underweight car. Getty Images Livestream the Belgian GP in the US Every Formula One race during the 2025 season will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC. All practice and qualifying sessions and all F1 Sprint events will also be broadcast. This race will be broadcast on ESPN. Selected races will also stream on ESPN Plus, featuring two alternate streams for all races (Driver Tracker and mixed onboard cameras). James Martin/CNET ESPN Plus Carries F1 races in the US ESPN's standalone streaming service is great for casual fans of F1 and is a must-have accessory for fanatics. It costs $12 a month or $120 a year. If you're an F1 fan who's also looking to get your Disney fix, the Disney trio bundle (Hulu, Disney Plus and ESPN Plus) might end up being an even better buy. It's great for fans who love catching the parts of the race weekend that typically air on ESPN2 or ESPNews, and also want the latest Marvel movies or Star Wars shows. If you're a diehard fan of motorsports and Formula Series racing, ESPN Plus might not be for you, given that it rarely covers F2, F3 or Porsche Supercar racing. That's why ESPN Plus is ideal for casual fans who enjoy catching a race every once in a while or fans who don't want or need all of the extra bells and whistles of F1 TV but want to beef up their coverage options. Read our full review of ESPN Plus. See at ESPN Plus How to watch the Belgian GP online from anywhere with a VPN If you're traveling abroad and want to keep up with the Formula One season while away from home, a VPN can help enhance your privacy and security when streaming. It encrypts your traffic and prevents your internet service provider from throttling your speeds, and can also be helpful when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks while traveling, adding an extra layer of protection for your devices and logins. VPNs are legal in many countries, including the US and Canada, and can be used for legitimate purposes such as improving online privacy and security. However, some streaming services may have policies restricting VPN usage to access region-specific content. If you're considering a VPN for streaming, check the platform's terms of service to ensure compliance. If you choose to use a VPN, follow the provider's installation instructions, ensuring you're connected securely and in compliance with applicable laws and service agreements. Some streaming platforms may block access when a VPN is detected, so verifying if your streaming subscription allows VPN usage is crucial. The entire event was built around Poirier's retirement fight, and the energy in the building was felt throughout the card. We all watched Poirier's heartfelt post-fight interview and the things he's said on the Ariel Helwani show and other media, but the finality of Poirier no longer fighting in MMA hit some UFC fans when UFC Roster News posted their update on X. This was a GIF-heavy string of reactions. There are more than 125 comments on the post, and the vast majority of them feature someone weeping. The GIF is of Vegeta being upset when he finds he is unable to go Super Saiyan, and he's standing dejected in the rain. Another said, 'won't be the same without him.' Another posted a GIF with a series of famous people crying, with Los Angeles Lakers icon LeBron James featured prominently. Poirier walks away from MMA competition with a 30-10 mark with one no contest. While Poirier never won an undisputed title in the UFC, he was the interim champion. His résumé is about as Hall-of-Fame worthy as anyone who never held undisputed gold. If you question Poirier's fitness for the Hall, I've got two words for you: 'Donald Cerrone.' Ilia Topuria obliterates Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 before wild face-off with Paddy Pimblett

Ilia Topuria's stunning UFC run continued on Saturday, as he knocked Charles Oliveira out cold to become a two-weight champion. In the main event of UFC 317, Topuria, who vacated the featherweight title in February, faced Oliveira for the vacant lightweight belt and finished the former champion in round one. After a frantic opening few minutes, in which both men landed in the striking exchanges and demonstrated grappling prowess in other moments, Topuria floored Oliveira with a right cross and left hook, leaving the Brazilian staring up at the lights in Las Vegas. Oliveira, 35, walked onto Topuria's right hand and was seemingly unconscious even before the left hook landed. 'Do Bronx', who held the 155lb title from 2021 until 2022, crumpled to the canvas and was pummeled with one more shot before referee Marc Goddard could step in. Topuria's victory kept the Spanish-Georgian unbeaten and saw him enter a small club of two-weight UFC champions. The 28-year-old knocked out Alexander Volkanovski last February to win the featherweight belt, before doing the same to Max Holloway in October to retain the gold. He then relinquished it this February, eyeing a move up to 155lb. Some fans felt that Topuria's victories over Volkanovski and Holloway were the greatest back-to-back wins ever recorded by a UFC fighter. Volkanovski is seen by some as the best featherweight in UFC history, while Holloway is also a former champion and modern great. And Topuria, who predicted that he would knock out both men, dealt Oliveira the same fate after making a similarly prophetic call. After 'El Matador' collected the lightweight title on Saturday (28 June), his quasi-rival Paddy Pimblett was called into the cage by UFC announcer Joe Rogan. In 2022, 'Paddy The Baddy' and Topuria were involved in an altercation at the fighter hotel ahead of UFC London, with the latter taking exception to seemingly anti-Georgian tweets by the Liverpudlian. 'We have some f*****g p***y [at ringside],' Topuria said in the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday. 'Whoever is ready for me, I'm here. I don't think he's gonna accept it, but if he thinks he's ready, come on, you p***y.' 'That was a heavy knockout, I'll give you that,' Pimblett responded after entering the Octagon. 'Respect, but you will never knock me out.' 'You'll get knocked out even before the fight,' Topuria laughed, before appearing to shove Pimblett, who is ranked eighth at lightweight. In the co-main event, Alexandre Pantoja recorded a fourth successful defence of his flyweight title, submitting Kai Kara-France in round two.
