Exoplanet is shrinking before the X-ray eyes of NASA's Chandra spacecraft: 'The future for this baby planet doesn't look great'

Using NASA's Chandra X-ray spacecraft, astronomers have witnessed a distant, Jupiter-size world "shrinking" as its host star bombards it with heavy radiation.
The extrasolar planet, or "exoplanet," is named TOI 1227 b and is a cosmic baby at just 8 million years old (remember, Earth is around 4.5 billion years old). And, incredibly, the world orbits its star at a distance of just 8.2 million miles, a fraction of the distance between the sun and Mercury, with a year that lasts just 28 days. This proximity means the star, named TOI 1227 and located around 330 light-years away, is blasting the planet with powerful X-rays.
This radiation is stripping the exoplanet's atmosphere away; in fact, the atmosphere of TOI 1227 b is likely to be completely gone in around 1 billion years. This will reduce the exoplanet to nothing more than a small, rocky and barren core.
The team behind this research estimates TOI 1227 b will have ultimately lost the equivalent of two Earths' worth of mass by the conclusion of its transformation. As of now, the world has a mass around 17 times that of Earth's.
"It's almost unfathomable to imagine what is happening to this planet," Attila Varga, study team leader and a researcher at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), said in a statement. "The planet's atmosphere simply cannot withstand the high X-ray dose it's receiving from its star."
While this exoplanet's parent star is less massive than the sun (with about 10% the mass of our star) and is cooler and fainter in optical light, it is actually brighter than our star in X-rays.
"A crucial part of understanding planets outside our solar system is to account for high-energy radiation like X-rays that they're receiving," team member and RIT scientist Joel Kastner said in the statement. "We think this planet is puffed up, or inflated, in large part as a result of the ongoing assault of X-rays from the star."
The team used Chandra to determine just how much X-ray radiation is roasting TOI 1227 b. The researchers then used computer modeling to assess the impact of this radiation on the exoplanet and its atmosphere. This revealed that roughly every two centuries, the world loses the equivalent of Earth's entire atmosphere from its own atmosphere.
"The future for this baby planet doesn't look great," Alexander Binks, a study team member and researcher at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, said in the statement. "From here, TOI 1227 b may shrink to about a tenth of its current size and will lose more than 10 percent of its weight."

The researchers estimated the age of TOI 1227 b using estimates of its host star's velocity through space and comparing them with the speed of nearby stellar populations with known ages. The team also compared the surface brightness of TOI 1227 with models of stellar evolution.
TOI 1227 b stands out from other exoplanets aged less than 50 million years because, among the set, it seems to have the longest year and a host star with the lowest mass.
The team's research has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal and appears as a preprint on the repository site arXiv.

The meteor shower is set to peak the night of Aug. 11 and 12, according to Ed Krupp, director of L.A.'s Griffith Observatory. NASA says the best viewing time is in the predawn hours. But the moon will get in the way. 'The waning gibbous moon will severely compromise this shower at the time of maximum activity,' notes the American Meteor Society. The moon will be about 92% full and in the sky much of the time as the shower hits its peak, Krupp said. 'Fainter meteors will be lost in the moon's glow,' he told The Times. 'At its best, the Perseid shower delivers between 50 to 100 meteors per hour, but this year far fewer will be seen.' Stargazers can cross their fingers for more fireballs, a phenomenon that the Perseid shower is known for, according to NASA. 'Fireballs are larger explosions of light and color that can persist longer than an average meteor streak,' NASA says. 'This is due to the fact that fireballs originate from larger particles of cometary material.' Krupp advises that those who are 'committed to the Perseids' despite the diminished chances of visibility this year 'should go somewhere far from any urban center and away from the scattered glare of artificial lighting.' Experts advise booking campsites in Joshua Tree, the Mojave Desert and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. There are multiple other good spots. Once there, aim for an expansive view because, although the Perseids seem to radiate from the northern constellation Perseus, they can appear anywhere, Bill Cooke, a NASA meteor scientist, told The Times in 2024. 'So get on a cot or on a sleeping bag,' he said, 'and lie flat on your back and look straight up.' Good news for 2026: The forecast for the Perseid meteor shower is excellent. The moon will be dark, and as NPR reports, an unusually large number of meteors are expected to flash through the night sky.

The Space Force's X-37B spaceplane will take off on its eighth mission next month, this time with experiments focused on space-based communications and quantum sensing. 'These experiments come as part of a broader push across the U.S. Space Force to uphold the safety and security of the space domain by enhancing the resilience and flexibility of U.S. orbital systems,' the service said in a statement Monday announcing the launch. The spacecraft, built by Boeing, has served as a testbed for the Defense Department and NASA since its first flight in 2010. While not an operational spacecraft, the mini space shuttle is used to fly experiments and test maneuvers and operational concepts in orbit. Much of that work has been classified, but the Space Force in recent years has offered more insight into the platform's missions. Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman discussed the forthcoming mission, which will launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter. 'It's about making our joint force more connected, more resilient and ready to operate in the face of any challenge,' Saltzman said. 'That's how America's Space Force secures our nation's interests in, from and to space.' For the communications experiment, the service will coordinate with commercial satellite networks in low Earth orbit, about 1,200 miles above the Earth's surface, to demonstrate laser communications — a technology that enables larger amounts of data to be transmitted more securely than traditional radio frequencies. 'The use of proliferated relay networks enhances the resilience of U.S. space architectures by ensuring that they contain no single point of failure,' the Space Force said. The quantum sensing demonstration will feature the highest performing quantum inertial sensor that's ever been used in space, according to the service. The sensor is designed to support navigation in orbit without GPS or other satellite networks. 'This technology is useful for navigation in GPS-denied environments and consequently will enhance the navigational resilience of U.S. spacecraft in the face of current and emerging threats,' the service said. 'As quantum inertial sensors would be useful for navigation in cis­lunar space, they additionally promise to push the technological frontiers of long-distance space travel and exploration.' The Fifth Space Operations Squadron at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, DC, conducts X-37B operations and experiments in partnership with the Space Rapid Capabilities Office. The service didn't describe the length of the mission or list any other experiments. It's last X-37B flight flew for 434 days, returning in March of this year. Among that mission's milestones was the demonstration of a series of aerobraking maneuvers that allowed the space vehicle to change orbits using minimal fuel.
