
Dr Martens promises not to raise prices this year despite US tariffs
Dr Martens has vowed not to increase prices this year and will continue sourcing from Vietnam and Laos, despite the threat of cripplingly high tariffs on the south-east Asian countries, where the bulk of its shoes are made.
The British footwear brand, best known for its boots with distinctive yellow stitching, said the majority of its autumn and winter stock would be either in the market or in transit by the start of July, around the time when the 90-day pause on an array of tariffs imposed by the US is due to come to an end.
Almost two-thirds (62%) of Dr Martens footwear is made in Vietnam, and a further 31% is produced in neighbouring Laos. Both countries were previously hit with some of the highest US tariffs, after China – 46% for Vietnam and 48% for Laos – before Donald Trump's temporary pause reduced them to 10%.
Despite this, Dr Martens said it was not considering moving any of its manufacturing to other locations.
'We are really thoughtful and scenario-planning about tariffs, but they are not making us do anything crazy,' Ije Nwokorie, the company's new chief executive, told the Guardian. 'These are long-term relationships, and you support each other's business when you are going through tough times.'
Nwokorie said the company – which sells its 1460 model of leather lace-up boots for £170 – was helped by the fact that tariffs were levied on the cost of goods rather than the price they were sold for.
'We are a high gross margin business, which means we are a low cost of goods business. From a competitive point of view, there is less impact on us than companies who don't have our gross margins,' he said.
He added that keeping the prices of its shoes, boots and bags unchanged was 'sustainable for this year' but said the company would be keeping control of its costs.
Despite the threat of higher tariffs affecting its products imported into the US, Dr Martens said its sales in the country had picked up over the past year as it focused on selling footwear directly to customers through its stores and website.
On Thursday, the company reported a slump in profits for the year to the end of March – to £8.8m, down from £93m a year earlier – as it faced 'challenging macroeconomic and consumer backdrop' in several of its key markets, including the UK.
The company makes 2,000 pairs of boots a week at its Northampton factory, although this only accounts for 1% of its production. It said UK sales were 'challenging'. Nwokorie blamed this on an extended period of high levels of discounting at UK retailers, which the company is aiming to reduce.

Nwokorie unveiled a plan to turn around the business, including by streamlining operations and tailoring marketing to different markets. He said he wanted to focus on Dr Martens' shoes, sandals and bags, alongside its boots.
The company's shares hit an all-time low in April after Trump's first tariff announcement. However, the turnaround plans seemed to please investors, and its shares rose 24% during morning trading on Thursday, making them the top riser on the FTSE 250 index.
The boot brand was originally created in 1945 by a young German army doctor, Klaus Märtens, who designed an air-cushioned sole to help his recovery from a broken foot.
They were introduced to the UK in 1960, with their sturdy design gaining popularity among postal delivery workers and factory staff before being embraced by skinheads and punks.

MANILA, June 7 (Reuters) - The Philippines said on Saturday that Indian nationals will be allowed to enter the country without a visa for tourism purposes beginning June 8. The visa-free arrangement is aimed at boosting tourism arrivals from India, which rose 12% in 2024 to nearly 80,000, according to data from the Department of Tourism. Despite the growth, Indian arrivals to the Philippines remain a small portion of the over five million who travelled to Southeast Asia last year. Under the visa-free policy, Indian nationals can enter the Philippines without a visa for up to 14 days. Those holding valid visas or residence permits from the United States, Australia, Canada, Schengen countries, Singapore, or the United Kingdom can stay in the Philippines visa-free for up to 30 days.

Brands are claiming to be 'Made in America' and then they're getting sued
Brands are desperate to emphasize that they are 'Made in America' as President Trump continues to wield tariffs to push for a homegrown manufacturing renaissance. However, some companies have been accused of misleading customers by claiming their product was made in the US, when in fact it was in part made overseas. As a result, dozens of brands are now facing legal action over their advertising and packaging. The litigation is being driven by a California law firm Kazerouni Law Group which has already launched 10 of the 13 class action suits filed so far this year. By comparison there were only seven similar cases brought in the whole of last year, according to consumer advocacy group Truth in Advertising. 'One of the platforms the administration was running on was how important American-made things are,' Abbas Kazerounian, founding partner of Kazerouni Law Group, told the Wall Street Journal. 'So the American public has out and out said, "This is something that's important to us."' Kazerouni's cases allege that popular brands have used that sentiment to sell more products and justify higher prices, without their origins being entirely in the US. High profile consumer goods makers have been drawn in to the fray, including Goya Foods, French's Mustard, PepsiCo's Pure Leaf Teas and Dude Wipes. Only Dude Wipes has spoken publicly of their case, telling the Journal that they are confident it will be dismissed. The brand now puts 'Assembled in the U.S.A.,' on their men's toiletry products, to reflect the fact that some components come from overseas. Last year Kazerounian sued the hair care brand Olaplex, for claiming to be made in the US. The case resulted in a settlement, and while Olaplex does not admit wrongdoing it agreed to pay Kazerouni's $1.05 million fees and give the plaintiff $5,000. Another high profile case, brought by another firm, saw a jury award $2.36 million in April to class action plaintiffs that sued the maker of Bigelow Teas. The case argued that the tea company had inaccurately put 'Manufactured in the USA' on its packaging. The odds are certainly in Kazerounian's favor. Of the 80 'Made in America' class action suits brought since 2011 only five have been dismissed, according to data from Truth in Advertising. Abbas Kazerounian, founding partner of Kazerouni Law Group is leading the legal charge Pure Leaf teas made by PepsiCo have also found themselves in the firing line No juries have ever come out in favor of defending companies either, the group said. Companies are so concerned about the threat of legal action that they are preemptively amending their advertising and packaging materials. The maker of Jeep and Ram vehicles changed a new ad campaign to avoid saying their vehicles were built in America because they contain imported parts. 'I think it's important to educate the public, and the businesses for that matter, who are more sophisticated than consumers generally, on why these cases are important,' Kazerounian concluded.

Diplomatic win for UK hosting US-China trade talks
Sky News understands that the Trump administration approached the UK government to ask if it would host round two of the US-China trade talks. This is a useful 'diplo-win' for the UK. The first round was held in Geneva last month. News of that happening came as a surprise. The Chinese and the Americans were in the midst of a Trump-instigated trade war. President Trump was en route to Saudi Arabia and suddenly we got word of talks in Switzerland. They went surprisingly well. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng, met face-to-face and agreed to suspend most tariffs for 90 days. But two weeks later, the Trump administration accused Beijing of breaking the agreements reached in Geneva. Beijing threw the blame back at Washington. On Wednesday, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping spoke by phone. The Chinese claimed this call was at the Americans' request. Either way, the consequence was that the talks were back on track. "I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, trade deal," President Trump said this week. From that call came the impetus for a second round of talks. A venue was needed. In stepped the UK at short notice. Beyond being geographically convenient, UK government sources suggest that Britain is geopolitically in the right place right now to act as this bridge and facilitator. The UK-China relationship is in the process of a "reset". Other locations, like Brussels or other EU capitals, would have been less workable. Crucially too, for the UK, this is also potentially advantageous as it seeks to get its own UK-US trade agreement, to eliminate or massively reduce tariffs, over the line. 5:08 Talks on reaching the "implementation phase" have been near-continuous since the announcement last month, but having the American principals in London is a plus. Sideline talks are possible, but even the presence of the US team in the UK is helpful. For all the chaos that President Trump is causing with his tariffs, he has instigated face-to-face conversations as he seeks resets. Key players are sitting down around tables - yes, to untangle the trade knots which Trump tied, but this whole episode has pulled foes together around the same table; it has forced relationships and maybe mutual understanding. That's useful. And for this next round, between superpowers, the UK is the host. Also useful.
