Taxi guards thwart daylight robbery on N2

Security guards attached to taxi associations are often considered rude and heartless, but Mtubatuba Taxi Association's guards have proven that they are different. This after they rescued a hapless truck driver from the clutches of criminals on Saturday, who were siphoning diesel from his broken-down rig on the N2. Speaking exclusively to the ZO, Mtubatuba taxi boss Jabulani Sibiya said he was with security guards patrolling the N2 between Nkodibe and KwaMsane when they were flagged down by the distraught truck driver, desperate for police assistance… Read the full story on the ZO Weekender, out on the shelves and on the ZO app. Don't have the ZO app? Parolee accused of posing as Hawks boss denied bail

The Hatfield Magistrate's Court has denied bail to a 41-year-old man, who has been identified as a parolee. Thabo Enoch Theletsane (41) is facing charges of fraud and impersonating a police official. Theletsane had allegedly conned two Pretoria victims while impersonating a Hawks boss. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the case has been postponed to September 2 for transfer to Court 16 at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court. It is alleged that on October 25, 2024, while out on parole for a previous fraud conviction, Theletsane contacted a prominent businessman via WhatsApp using a profile picture of former Hawks boss Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya. 'During the conversation, he allegedly claimed his phone had been hacked and that the businessman would be contacted by a 'Mr. Mokoena', supposedly a cybercrime unit officer,' said Mahanjana. Mahanjana said that posing as 'Mr. Mokoena', Theletsane allegedly told the businessman that his phone had been hacked and requested frequently used contact numbers. She added that he is accused of later contacting another person using those numbers, demanding R50 000 for a hard drive to 'store' their information. Mahanjana stated that the complainant reportedly paid the amount, while the other person initially refused. 'Both later opened fraud cases on November 1, 2024. Following an investigation, Theletsane was arrested on May 10.' She said in his bail bid, Theletsane claimed he had seven children and another on the way, adding that the parole board might reconsider revoking his parole if he were granted bail. However, prosecutor Dikeledi Moganyaka opposed the application, citing an affidavit from investigating officer Mpho Phantinah Dlamini. Dlamini alleged that the accused gave a false address during the investigation, has two prior convictions for fraud and forgery from 2020, and is likely to reoffend if released. The magistrate agreed, noting that Theletsane allegedly committed the new offences only days after being released on parole, and that releasing him would be in the interest of justice. Bogus traditional healer sentenced for rape

Bogus traditional healer Bongani Mafolela, accused of rape and attempted rape, was this week sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for two separate offences. Mafolela (24) was convicted and sentenced by the Molopo Regional Court in the North West. ALSO READ: Suspected killer nabbed in eSikhaleni He was given 10 years for the rape he committed in 2022 and five years for the attempted rape he committed in 2024. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) North West Province spokesperson, Sivenathi Gunya, said the court added that both sentences run consecutively, and his name be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders. The court heard that on 6 February 2022, Mafolela met one of the victims in Imperial Reserve, Mafikeng. Claiming to be a traditional healer, he 'prophesied' that she had an evil spirit that needed to be removed and persuaded her to visit his surgery the following day. During the consultation, Mafolela prepared a bath for the victim to 'cleanse' herself. She became suspicious when he refused to leave the room, but complied because she believed she needed help. After the bath, he instructed her to lie on the bed, after which he raped her, warning her not to report it otherwise she might be involved in an accident. In April 2022, after discovering she was pregnant, the victim reported the matter to the police, leading to Mafolela's arrest. He was later released on bail. While out on bail, on 4 September 2024, Mafolela met another victim in Montshioa, Mmabatho. After claiming she had a spiritual calling, he shared a drink with her, which made her feel dizzy and sleepy. While she was lying down, she realised her tracksuit pants had been pulled down and saw Mafolela undressing himself. She resisted and reported the matter to the police, leading to his rearrest the following day. In court, Mafolela pleaded not guilty. Advocate Kefentse Diseko argued that youthfulness should not automatically mitigate sentences in serious offences like rape, and urged the court to consider the alarming prevalence of GBV in South Africa. In delivering judgment, Regional Court Magistrate Mathews found that Mafolela abused cultural beliefs and his position as a traditional healer to exploit his victims. The court further ordered a search and seizure operation at his premises to check for drugs or weapons. Don't have the ZO app?
