Blood donor day observed
Ranchi: World Blood Donor Day was observed in the state capital on Saturday.
The two-day blood donation drive by BNI, Ranchi, concluded with a collection of 501 units of blood with politicians and officials turning up since Friday to donate.

Among the donors, 70 were first-timers, 60 female, and 20 couples. SDO Utkarsh Kumar and IPS Sanjay Anand Rao Lathkar were among the donors.
"The response from the public has been overwhelming," said Ankit Jain, the executive director of the BNI.
A drive was also led by Marwari College's NCC Company and NSS Unit on Saturday, during which 13 cadets and associate NCC officer Lt Dr Avadh Bihari Mahto donated blood at the Sadar Hospital, Ranchi. A total of 47 units of blood were collected.
Besides, free blood group and haemoglobin level tests were conducted across district hospitals, sub-divisional hospitals, and community health centres on Saturday.

Andhra Pradesh Health Minister calls for regular blood donation
GUNTUR: Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav on Saturday urged the youth to regularly donate blood to address shortages. Speaking at World Blood Donor Day celebrations organised by the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) in Guntur, the minister highlighted that despite technological advancements, there is no substitute for human blood. He commended the Red Cross for its crucial role in supplying safe and quality blood, especially during emergencies. The minister noted that 20 blood centres in the State currently meet 20% of Andhra Pradesh's total blood requirements by supplying approximately one lakh units annually. On the occasion, AP Red Cross Society State Chairman YD Rama Rao outlined plans for more transfusion centres and free HPV vaccination programmes for girls. General Secretary AK Parida announced 'Mee Intiki Mee Doctor,' a major outreach initiative bringing medical care to seven new districts with support from REC Limited. The event concluded with the presentation of Karl Landsteiner Awards, pioneer of blood transfusion, ceremony.

Governor presents ‘Best Service' award to Wanaparthy man
Wanaparthy: 'The services of Yuvashakti Foundation are remarkable,' said Governor Jishnu Dev Varma on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad on Saturday. The Governor presented 'Best Service Award' to Kagitala Madhu, the Founder-President of Yuvashakti Foundation on the day. Madhu, hailing from Khilla Ghanpur Mandal in Wanaparthy district, has been spreading awareness about blood donation among youth through WhatsApp groups across the state. He has inspired many by voluntarily organising blood donations round the clock for over 30,000 people across Telangana, becoming a role model for many. Kagitala Madhu shared his happiness at receiving the award, stating that it would inspire him to do even more service in the days to come. He dedicated the award to the people of his native village Khilla Ghanpur, the people of Wanaparthy district, and the Yuvashakti Foundation family working across the state. Speaking on the occasion, he said, 'Being born as a human is not great, but donating blood in times of emergency and saving lives is truly great.' He urged healthy young men and women to come forward and donate blood. He expressed gratitude to everyone who has donated blood so far through the Yuvashakti Foundation and to everyone who has supported the foundation.

Recognising selfless service, SVIMS celebrates World Blood Donor Day
Tirupati: Recognising the life-saving role of voluntary blood donors, Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) celebrated World Blood Donor Day by honouring 77 individuals for their selfless contributions with certificates of appreciation. The event, held on Saturday and organised by the Department of Immunohematology and Transfusion Medicine (Blood Centre), acknowledged the crucial impact of regular blood donors in sustaining emergency and advanced medical care. Speaking on the occasion, SVIMS Director-cum-Vice-Chancellor Dr R V Kumar underlined the need to make blood donation a part of everyday life. 'Blood is not only essential in emergencies and trauma care, but is also crucial across all super-specialty departments,' he noted. Reflecting on his own experiences, he shared that he had donated blood countless times. 'On one occasion, I even had the opportunity to donate blood just before performing open-heart surgery,' he recalled. He also highlighted the exceptional performance of the SVIMS Blood Centre, which has now been designated as a training hub for organisations conducting voluntary blood donation camps. SVIMS Dean Dr Alladi Mohan pointed out the stark gap in demand and supply of blood units in India. 'While the country needs four crore units of blood annually, only 40 lakh units are available. Although 50 per cent of the population is eligible to donate, only four out of every 1,000 people actually donate,' he said, attributing the shortfall to lack of awareness. He stressed that men can donate every three months and women every six months without health risks. Medical Superintendent Dr Ram highlighted the introduction of the National Health Mission's 'e-Rakt Kosh' app, which facilitates easier access to blood donation services. He encouraged young people to actively participate in blood donation drives. Head of the Blood Centre Dr Sridhar Babu shared that this year's World Blood Donor Day is being celebrated with the theme 'Give blood. Give hope – Together we save lives'. All attendees took a pledge to donate blood whenever someone is in need. SVIMS Registrar Dr Aparna R Bitla, in-charge Principal of Sri Padmavathi Women's Medical College Dr Mukteshwarayya, RMO Dr Kotireddy, Senior Professor of Cardiology Dr Vanajakshamma, and several others participated.
