Crews guard against flare-up of Vancouver Island wildfire after rainfall
PORT ALBERNI — Crews fighting an out-of-control wildfire near Port Alberni, B.C., say they are taking advantage of recent rainfall to guard against the blaze flaring up again.
In a video message posted on its Facebook page, the BC Wildfire Service says there are 144 personnel working on the Mount Underwood blaze and they're starting to 'mop up' areas at the fire's perimeter by extinguishing hot spots.
Mount Underwood fire operations chief Kiah Allen says the goal is to prevent future flare-ups that can create spot fires outside the perimeter once drier and warmer weather returns later this week.
The fire measured at more than 36 square kilometres has triggered evacuation orders and shut off power, telecom and the main road access to nearby Bamfield, B.C.
Environment Canada has again issued a special air quality statement for parts of Vancouver Island, saying that localized smoke from Mount Underwood may 'periodically' affect Port Alberni and other nearby communities.
Rain over the weekend has helped douse wildfire activity across B.C., with the number of active blazes down to about 60.

Vancouver's New Brighton Pool closed ‘until further notice'
This photo of New Brighton Pool was posted on social media by the Vancouver Park Board in 2017. (Twitter/parkboard) One of Vancouver's few outdoor swimming pools is closed 'until further notice,' the park board announced Tuesday. New Brighton Pool is shuttered due to a 'mechanical issue,' according to a social media post. Asked for more information, a spokesperson described the issue as an 'unexpected' problem with a pump. There is no estimated time for reopening and it's unclear if swimmers will be able to visit again before Labour Day, when the pool would have closed for the season. 'Our team is working hard to resolve the issue, and we'll share updates on our website and social media as soon as more information becomes available,' a statement provided to CTV News said. The closure comes as hot weather is forecast to return, with temperatures predicted to hover around 30 degrees this coming weekend. The closure leaves outdoor pool users with four other options: Kitsilano, Second Beach and the relatively small Hillcrest and Maple Grove pools.
