Human capability must be central to policy, investment for better health: IsDB chairman
RIYADH: Human capability should be ingrained in every policy and investment made in order to safeguard health, according to the chairman of the Islamic Development Bank Group.
Speaking on the first day of the Human Capability Initiative 2025 in Riyadh, Mohammed Al-Jasser explained that good health is not a privilege but a prerequisite for dignity, productivity, and national development.
This aligns with the group's goal to promote comprehensive human development, focusing on the priority areas of alleviating poverty, improving health, and promoting education, as well as enhancing governance, and bringing prosperity to the people.
'To be truly ready, we must ingrain human capability in every policy we shape and every investment we make. Our legacy will not be measured by material wealth but by how effectively we nurture minds, safeguard health, and empower communities,' Al-Jasser said.
'In 2023 alone, the Islamic Development Bank approved $1.4 billion in healthcare investments,' he added.
The IsDB chairman noted that the group supported the expansion of maternal and neonatal services in Mauritania, helping to reduce preventable deaths and protect the next generation.
'Our partnership with UNICEF through the Global Muslim Philanthropy Fund delivers lifesaving nutrition, clean water, and essential health services to children in crisis zones,' Al-Jasser said.
He added: 'We are proud of our role in the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, our $1.5 billion collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, The Gates Foundation and other donors, this initiative is transforming lives by expanding access to vaccines and strengthening our primary healthcare.'
The chairman also shed light on the recently launched Health Impact Investment Platform in partnership with the African Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the World Health Organization.
'This bold initiative reimagines health as an investable asset, channeling both concessional and private capital to scale up cancer diagnostics and care in underserved regions, particularly in Africa,' Al-Jasser said.
The two-day event unites government entities, the private sector, and nonprofit organizations to foster collaboration and drive innovation in human capabilities.
Organized by the Human Capability Development Program — a part of the Vision 2030 realization undertakings — in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the conference is also expected to explore breakthrough learning models and strategies for future workforce readiness.
HCI 2025 will host over 100-panel discussions across four main stages, focusing on key future trends in developing human potential. It will explore innovative methods to empower individuals and communities while fostering stronger public-private sector collaboration to create sustainable and impactful solutions for the future.

Smart tech aids lifesaving care for Hajj pilgrim
MAKKAH: A Moroccan pilgrim who had suffered a 'severe' heart attack was admitted to King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, where she received 'urgent care supported by smartwatch technology and continuous virtual monitoring,' the Saudi Press Agency reported on Saturday. The hospital, part of the Makkah Health Cluster, reported that the patient also suffered from chronic conditions including hypertension and diabetes. She 'underwent cardiac catheterization, during which a drug-eluting stent was placed in the left anterior descending artery,' the SPA reported. After stabilization, she was equipped with a smartwatch linked to the Seha Virtual Hospital system for remote monitoring, enabling her to complete her pilgrimage safely. Later, in Mina, the smartwatch detected abnormal readings as the patient experienced chest pain again, triggering an alert. The virtual care team directed her to Mina Al-Jisr Hospital, where she was evaluated and admitted for observation. Once stable, she was discharged with a treatment plan and continued virtual follow-up. This case 'illustrates the strength of Saudi Arabia's digital health infrastructure during Hajj and reflects the Ministry of Health's progress toward Vision 2030, prioritizing high-quality, smart healthcare for pilgrims,' the SPA wrote.

Over 23,000 buses deployed while Mashaer Train transports 604,000 pilgrims
Saudi Gazette Report MINA — More than 23,000 buses were deployed across three shuttle routes, supplemented by traditional modes of transportation during this year's Hajj, according to the control room at the Public Transport Center of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites. This effort, part of the largest transport fleet operating in a single area worldwide, achieved a record time for Tawaf Al-Ifadah, demonstrating exceptional professionalism and precise operational coordination. Moreover, the Mashaer Metro Train maintained its efficient performance, transporting over 604,000 pilgrims since its launch of operation for this year's Hajj on Tuesday. These were distributed across three main movements: Movement A with more than 27,000 passengers, Movement B with 283,000, and Movement C—the highest—with 294,000, reflecting the system's strong operational efficiency. In the health sector, the Ministry of Health continued to provide integrated services through its facilities across the holy sites. The number of health services provided exceeded 125,573, including advanced procedures such as 216 cardiac catheterizations and 18 open-heart surgeries, all performed efficiently by qualified Saudi medical personnel. This outcome confirms the high level of health preparedness and the development of national medical capabilities. In the same context, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah reported that it has conducted over 5.5 million electronic readings of the Nusuk Card as part of its technical plans to enhance pilgrim services and improve organizational safety. Meanwhile, the Pilgrims Care Center, through the unified number 1966, has provided more than 310,000 services since the beginning of the season, including inquiries and direct support. Additionally, field teams from the Compliance Centers have carried out over 65,000 inspection tours of service providers to reinforce compliance and improve performance quality. These integrated efforts reflect the strong coordination among various entities involved in Hajj, under the guidance of the wise leadership and in line with the objectives of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, which aims to advance the Hajj system, harness modern technology, enhance the pilgrim experience, and enable them to perform their rituals in a safe, organized environment prepared to the highest international standards.
