Mazda Miata EV Potentially Previewed By Unique Motor And Battery Patents
Slowly but surely, the automotive world is going electric. With the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9, you can now get a battery-powered three-row family-friendly SUV. Luxury customers can grab the Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan instead of a traditional S-Class, and even Ford offers an all-electric F-150 pickup truck, the Lightning. There are a lot of great choices in the EV world today, and one automaker may be poised to electrify its most legendary vehicle.

Mazda revealed some details about the next MX-5. And it's time to get excited.
Is The Miata Going Electric? It Sure Could Be
According to some U.S. patent applications, which were published on April 10, 2025, Mazda may be developing a battery-powered Miata sports car. The Hiroshima, Japan-based company doesn't explicitly call out the Miata in these documents, instead referring to an 'electric automobile,' but just look at the included photos. That sure ain't a reborn B-Series compact truck or an all-electric CX-90 SUV.
According to one of these patent applications, the vehicle in question is designed to have 'sufficient installation quantity of the battery, providing the superior layout of the motor for the yaw moment of inertia by making the motor be close to a central portion, in the longitudinal direction, of the vehicle as much as possible.' In simple terms, it sounds like an all-electric Miata might have a centrally mounted motor – or at least, the traction motor fitted just ahead of the rear axle where it powers the wheels through a short driveshaft – for better weight distribution and enhanced dynamics. But that's not all.
Mazda Patent Application
Another key aspect of this design is the placement of battery cells. It appears Mazda engineers are sprinkling modules throughout various parts of the car, at the front of the traditional floor tunnel, in the rear, and, curiously, even ahead of the passenger seat.
Mazda Patents Movable Battery Pack
Mazda Patent Application
And that is where things get especially interesting, because Mazda has also developed a movable battery pack. Yes, you read that correctly, a battery pack that can be moved. As printed in another patent application, the battery on the passenger side is bulky and heavy, 'the longitudinal weight balance or the lateral weight balance of the vehicle can be adjusted by moving the assistant-driver's-seat side battery by means of the battery-moving device.' The application continues, 'It becomes possible by this adjustment to properly set the weight balance depending on existence or non-existence of the passenger seated in the assistant driver's seat, the weight of the driver seated in the driver's seat, or the like.' So, basically, a future electric Miata could use a portion of its bulky and heavy battery pack to improve vehicle handling, rather than just making it worse.
Of course, patent applications and actual, drivable production vehicles are two different things, but Mazda sure has some clever ideas here. Mounting the motor in the center of the vehicle and using it the power the rear wheels through a short driveshaft makes a lot of sense, as does having smaller battery packs installed throughout the vehicle, rather than just in the floor. But that movable battery assembly raises some big questions. How effective could this really be? Does it work reliably? And if you have a giant battery assembly immediately ahead of the passenger – as shown in the patent illustrations – does this negatively impact vehicle comfort?
Mazda Patent Application
These questions – and many more – will have to be addressed if Mazda ever builds an all-electric Miata or introduces these new ideas in a different vehicle.

S&P 500 ends higher as Oracle reignites AI rally; Boeing drops
STORY: Stocks closed higher Thursday with the Dow rising a quarter of a percent, the S&P 500 gaining about four tenths of one percent and the Nasdaq also adding about a quarter of a percent. A strong outlook from Oracle fueled optimism around artificial intelligence, offsetting worries about tension in the Middle East and a drop in Boeing shares. Oracle hit a record high during the session and closed up more than 13% after the company raised its annual revenue forecast, driven by strong demand for its AI-related cloud services. Shana Orczyk Sissel, founder and CEO of Banríon Capital Management believes AI-related stocks are what investors should consider for the long term. 'The types of companies that I'm looking to invest in right now are companies that have a tailwind that is largely not impacted long term by things like tariff policy, fiscal policy, things of that nature. Transformational things which obviously I'm referring to things like artificial intelligence and AI, the chip makers, anybody that is highly involved in the AI ecosystem, I think will benefit long term, despite short term headwinds of that are related to broader economic policy.' Shares of Boeing fell nearly 5% after an Air India Dreamliner jet crashed minutes after taking off in India's western city of Ahmedabad, killing more than 200 people. Investors were still monitoring rising tensions in the Middle East. President Donald Trump said U.S. personnel were being moved out of the region because "it could be a dangerous place," and he said the United States would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. Officials from both countries are scheduled to meet in Oman on Sunday for a sixth round of nuclear talks.

The Shocking Truth About New Car Prices Right Now
The Shocking Truth About New Car Prices Right Now originally appeared on Autoblog. Kelley Blue Book data drawn from auto dealerships has reflected that new car prices remained steady in May despite some manufacturers raising costs due to tariffs. Additionally, new electric vehicle (EV) sales were mixed by brand, even with significantly more incentives. The average manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for a new car in May was $50,968—a slight increase from April but the highest figure in 2025 so far and a 2.1% year-over-year increase. December 2024 saw MSRPs peak at $51,990. New-vehicle Average Transaction Prices (ATP) were almost identical to April's $48,811 at $48,799 and have increased by 1% compared to last year. ATP on compact and mid-size SUV segments remained largely the same, and with the pre-tariff shopping rush winding down, dealership sales dropped to 15.6 million compared to April's 17.3 million. Sports cars, luxury cars, and luxury subcompact SUVs had the most significant price increases in May, whereas costs for popular small/mid-size pickup trucks rose 0.9% month-over-month, reaching $42,062. Incentives were the least clear trend within May's new vehicle sales data. New car incentives increased slightly from 6.7% of ATP to 6.8% ($3,297)—the same amount as May's year-over-year rise. However, several automakers lowered incentive spending last month, including Volkswagen, Mazda, Land Rover, Volvo, BMW, Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram. Still, a few manufacturers, such as Tesla, Toyota, and Nissan, vastly increased May incentive spending, with Toyota's rising by 20%. While Toyota's incentive spending increase is notable, its 4.1% of ATP remains below the industry's 6.8% incentive rate in May. Compact and mid-size SUV segments were among the classes with the least changed incentives, but the average EV incentive package increased from 11.6% month-over-month to 14.2% of ATP ($8,225), marking the highest level since 2018. Tesla ATP declined 1.5% to $55,277. May was General Motors' second-best month ever for EV sales, and Hyundai's electric Ioniq 6 sedan saw a 9% year-over-year delivery increase. Automakers like Ford had their May EV sales decline by 25%. 'While tariff policy is adding uncertainty to the new-vehicle market, prices are holding remarkably steady, a reminder that auto industry change is often slow. Many automakers are keeping true to a promise to hold the line on pricing, at least in the near term. We are still expecting prices to move higher through the summer as the inflationary impact of tariffs begins to hit. Right now, we believe dealer profitability is being squeezed, as costs on many products are going up, but raising retail prices in this environment is a real challenge,' said Erin Keating, Executive Analyst at Cox Automotive. U.S. consumers rushed to dealerships in March and April, hoping to beat tariff price adjustments, but even in May, shoppers could still acquire comparable deals. Automakers like Ford have extended their employee pricing promotion through the 4th of July weekend, and Tesla ATP has declined 1.5%. Some consumers realized they had time to beat tariff pricing, as dealership sales were up 1.4% year-over-year in May despite a slowing sales pace, according to MarkLines data. Still, CBT News notes that U.S. auto imports fell 72% in May, so while dramatic price increases won't happen as quickly as some might have imagined, it could become harder for drivers to find the exact model and trim they want. New era ahead for Capri Lanes: Property sold, improvements planned
DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — After being placed on the market for sale just a few weeks ago, a well-known bowling alley in Kettering is now under new ownership. Capri Lanes, located at 2727 S. Dixie Drive in Kettering, is expected to reopen under new ownership on June 17. Phillip M. Cox, director of revenue at Strike & Spare Family Entertainment, LLC. confirmed to the company purchased Capri Lanes. Over the next few months, S&S will work to add 12 lanes to the building to reintroduce a 36-lane bowling center. Improvements to food, paint and seats at the business are also anticipated to also occur. Cox said how customers are charged for bowling will likely also change. 'We will be changing the open play price structure to offer bowl by the game and by the hour pricing and there will also be daily and nightly bowling specials to allow everyone to experience what we have to offer here at Capri Lanes,' said Cox. According to Cox, the company is grateful to now be a part of the Miami Valley community. 'We are incredibly proud and honored to be a part of the rich history of Capri Lanes and the amazing bowling community of Dayton,' said Cox. 'As soon as we heard of the possibility, we wasted no time in coming to meet with Arthur and making a deal.' S&S did not reveal the sale price to but rather thanked Arthur Fertel, the previous owner, for his assistance in working with his company to complete the sale. Strike & Spare owns and operates several bowling alleys across Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. The nearest other location S&S owns is Western Bowl, just northwest of Cincinnati's Western Hills neighborhood. Until the end of October, parents can sign-up their kids under age 15 to bowl for free, which is a part of the Kids Bowl Free initiative. Kids will receive two games free each day through the program. You can click here to register. The bowling center is currently hiring. To fill out an application, click here.
