UK, France and other nations call for an immediate end to war in Gaza

Arab News3 days ago
LONDON: Britain and more than 20 other countries called on Monday for an immediate end to the war in Gaza and criticized the Israeli government's aid delivery model after hundreds of Palestinians were killed near sites distributing food.
France, Italy, Japan, Australia, Canada, Denmark and other countries said more than 800 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid and condemned what it called the 'drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians.'
The majority of those killed were in the vicinity of Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites, which the United States and Israel backed to take over aid distribution in Gaza from a network led by the United Nations.
'The Israeli government's aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity,' the countries' foreign ministers said in a joint statement.
The call for an end to the war and the way Israel delivers aid comes from several countries which are allied with Israel and its most important backer, the United States.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation uses private US security and logistics companies to get supplies into Gaza, largely bypassing a UN-led system that Israel alleges has let Hamas-led militants loot aid shipments intended for civilians. Hamas denies the accusation.
The UN has called the GHF's model unsafe and a breach of humanitarian impartiality standards, which GHF denies.

Brazil to Join South Africa's ICJ Genocide Case against Israel

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry revealed on Wednesday that the country is currently finalizing its submission to join South Africa's genocide case against Israel's war in Gaza at the International Court of Justice, according to Reuters. Brazil also accused the Israeli government of violating the international law by annexing the territories 'by force.' Meanwhile, Israel denies deliberately targeting Palestinian civilians, stressing that its objective is to eliminate Hamas. Lawyers for Israel have also labeled South Africa's case as an abuse of the genocide convention. 'The breaking of Brazil's long-standing friendship and partnership with Israel is a misguided move that proves the extremism of our foreign policy,' Brazil's National Israeli association CONIB said in a statement. Strong Condemnation In June, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva condemned Israeli war on Gaza and called it a 'premeditated genocide,' during his visit to Paris. 'This is not a war. It is genocide. A genocide being carried out by a highly trained army, against women and children' Lula said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. '[It is] a premeditated genocide from a far-right government that is waging a war, including against the interests of its own people,' he said. This was not the first time for Lulu to use the term 'genocide' to describe Israel's actions in Gaza. Genocide Case South Africa accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians, following Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023. It submitted various evidence claiming, 'acts and omissions' by Israel 'are genocidal, aimed at bringing about' the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnical group'. South Africa accused the Israeli occupation of carrying out air strikes and killing thousands of Palestinians, mentioning comments from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as evidence of 'genocidal intent'. Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 57,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 137,000, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Countries Joining Genocide Case Other countries such as Spain, Turkey, and Colombia have also sought to join the case against Israel. Turkey joined the case as a response to Israel's violations during the war on Gaza after it has already taken serious steps against Israel, such as the restrictions on some exports. Moreover, Nicaragua's application was submitted under Article 62 of the ICJ Statute, requesting intervention in South Africa's case against Israel. Columbia supported South Africa's case and requested a different type of intervention under Article 63 of the Statute to assist the Court in interpreting the provisions of the Convention in this case. Israel's Response Israel fiercely dismissed the case and accused South Africa of presenting 'grossly distorted' allegations of genocide. Israel insists that its bloody war in Gaza is 'self-defense,' and it targets Hamas, not the Palestinians, and that its leaders have shown no genocidal intent, reported CNN. In addition, it asked the UN court to dismiss the case on the grounds that the evidence is 'unfounded.' The ICJ also ordered Israel to stop its Rafah military assault in Gaza in response to a complaint from South Africa. It also ruled Israel must keep Rafah crossing open for 'unhindered' humanitarian aid. The ICJ also ordered Israel to submit a report to the court within one month containing all measures taken to comply with the order. In April 2024, the court set deadlines for the parties to submit their evidence and counter-memorials, which will be October 28, 2024, and July 28, 2025, respectively. US envoy Witkoff says withdrawing from Gaza talks, considering ‘alternative options'

US envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday announced Washington was joining Israel in pulling negotiators back from Gaza peace talks in the Qatari capital, accusing Hamas of not 'acting in good faith.' 'We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza,' Witkoff posted on social media. 'While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith.' Witkoff said Washington would now 'consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza. It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way.'

Ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn launches new UK political party

LONDON: Former leftist Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced Thursday he was forming a new political party alongside another ex-member of Britain's ruling party, as the UK's political landscape continues to splinter. Corbyn, who lost two elections as Labour leader in 2017 and 2019, and fellow independent MP Zarah Sultana referred to the new left-wing outfit as 'Your Party,' but later said its name still had to be decided. 'It's time for a new kind of political party. One that is rooted in our communities, trade unions and social movements,' they said in a joint statement. In their announcement, they called for a 'mass redistribution of wealth and power' and said they would 'keep demanding an end to all arms sales to Israel.' They also committed to a 'free and independent Palestine.' Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has pulled Labour to the center since succeeding Corbyn as leader, faces growing calls within his party to recognize a Palestinian state. Corbyn, 76, stepped down as Labour leader after overseeing its worst result in decades, when it was trounced in the 2019 general election by the Conservatives, then led by Boris Johnson. Labour under Starmer suspended him in 2020 after he refused to fully accept the findings of a rights watchdog's probe into claims that anti-Semitism had become rampant within Labour's ranks under his leadership. The Equality and Human Rights Commission ruled the party had broken equality law when Corbyn was in charge. Corbyn said anti-Semitism had been 'dramatically overstated for political reasons.' Last year Corbyn announced he would stand as an independent in the July 2024 general election after Labour failed to put him forward as a candidate. He was expelled from the party but still went on to win comfortably his Islington North seat in London, which he has represented for more than 40 years. Sultana, an MP since 2019, was suspended by Labour last year after she and several other members of parliament voted to scrap a controversial cap on child benefits. While it remains to be seen whether the new movement will take off, its formation appears to confirm a trend in British politics toward a multi-party system. British politics has long been dominated by Labour and the Conservatives, but three other parties are challenging that order. The center-left Liberal Democrats won 72 seats in the 650-seat parliament in July 2024, while Nigel Farage's anti-immigrant Reform UK party won about 14 percent of the vote. It picked up five seats, an unprecedented breakthrough for a hard-right party in Britain. Farage's Euroskeptics swept dozens of council and mayoral seats in local elections in May and are leading national opinion polls, although the next general election is not expected until 2029. While Reform are picking up support on the right, Labour is also losing votes to the Greens on the left. Starmer, a former chief state prosecutor who is seen as too right-wing for some left-wingers in his party, recently suspended four lawmakers who rebelled over his attempts at reforming welfare. They currently sit as independents and Westminster watchers will be keeping a close eye on whether they are tempted to join Corbyn's new party. 'I do think there is space for a left-wing populist party in the UK with a charismatic leader that could pose an enormous threat to Labour and the other parties, but it's going to take a lot to convince me that Jeremy Corbyn can be it,' Chris Hopkins, political research director at polling firm Savanta, told AFP.
