Get ready to return to the shadows of Middle-earth! Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have officially announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum will hit theaters on December 17, 2027.
This new chapter marks a major reunion of the original trilogy's creative dream team. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the powerhouse trio behind both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, are back on board to produce not one, but two new films set in J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved world. They'll be joined by producer Zane Weiner, who also worked on The Hobbit films.
The first entry, Hunt for Gollum , brings Andy Serkis back into the spotlight, not only as the tortured creature Gollum, but also behind the camera as director.
The screenplay comes from a familiar and promising mix of writers that include Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, who are helping breathe new life into the saga. As for the second film? No word yet on who'll be directing, but that reveal is likely just over the horizon.
The film will be a standalone story, filmed in New Zealand, with Peter Jackson attached as executive producer. Boyens previously revealed details on the story and promised The Hunt For Gollum would be a gripping tale, saying:
'It's quite an intense story, which falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines Of Moria. It's a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature.'
During another interview, Jackson also opened up about the story they are looking to tell offering some insight on why they wanted to tell this tragic story of Gollum.
Jackson explained: 'The Gollum/Sméagol character has always fascinated me because Gollum reflects the worst of human nature, whilst his Sméagol side is, arguably, quite sympathetic.
'I think he connects with readers and film audiences alike, because there's a little bit of both of them in all of us. We really want to explore his backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn't have time to cover in the earlier films.
'It's too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from Professor Tolkien.'
We also know that Ian McKellen's Gandalf is set to play a role in the film. When asked about the story direction, Lord of the Rings Boyens hinted at the wizard's involvement, saying, "We're playing around with a number of ideas, but most of those ideas do include Gandalf."
McKellen also talked about the project, saying: "Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating. I can't tell you any more than that. I've just been told there are going to be more films and Gandalf will be involved and they hope that I'll be playing him."
The actor added: "When? I don't know. What the script is? It's not written yet. So, they better be quick.' When asked previously asked if he's interested in returning to the role, he replied with a chuckle, "If I'm alive."
It's worth noting that Warner Bros. has been clear about their ambitions to further expand the Middle-earth universe. CEO David Zaslav previously said the studio was 'committed to reinvesting in the Lord of the Rings franchise.'

When Is ‘A Minecraft Movie' Coming To Streaming On Max?

Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that Jack Black and Jason Momoa's A Minecraft Movie would begin streaming on Max in June. However, we're a week and a half into June and A Minecraft Movie still has no release date on the Max streaming service, which will renamed HBO Max this summer. News broke on May 21 that A Minecraft Movie was part Max's new lineup of programming in June. The move was surprising given the expediency of the release coming to the streaming service, considering the film opened in theaters on April 4 and made its debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 13. In Warner Bros. Discovery's May announcement of A Minecraft Movie's debut on the service, the press release only said the movie was 'coming soon.' A Minecraft Movie is still playing in 346 North American theaters. To date, the film has earned $423.6 million domestically and nearly $527.6 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $951.2 million against a $150 million budget, according to The Numbers. A Minecraft Movie attracted unique attention early in the film's run thanks to the film's "Chicken Jockey" scene and the havoc that erupted during screenings. Piglin characters in "A Minecraft Movie." Warner Bros. Pictures With no new news from Warner Bros. Discovery about A Minecraft Movie about the release of the film on Max, the streaming tracker When to Stream is projecting a potential landing date for the film on the platform. When to Stream, which is typically accurate with its PVOD and streaming service reports, previously forecasted June 20 arrival for A Minecraft Movie on Max since that is the only available date that the service doesn't have a big title scheduled for release. In recent reports, When to Stream is sticking with its projection. The most recent mention of A Minecraft Movie's pending release on Max from Warner Bros. Discovery came in a Tuesday press release, where the title was mentioned among others that will be available to 12 new countries when the platform expands its global footprint in July. Rated PG, A Minecraft Movie follows four misfits (Jason Momoa, Sebastian Hansen, Danielle Brooks and Emma Meyers) who are sucked into a portal in a mine that brings them to the Overworld, where anything the mind imagines can be built with blocks. It's in the Overworld where the group encounters a smattering of block-shaped creatures and the human, Steve (Jack Black), who is being held by a nefarious, pig-like group known as the Piglins. Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge and the voices of Hess, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Bret McKenzie and Matt Berry. A Minecraft Movie, of course, is based on the blockbuster Mojang Studios video game Minecraft.

Robert Eggers Is Making a ‘Christmas Carol' Movie, and Willem Dafoe May Be Scrooge

Over the decades, few stories have been as malleable as Charles Dickens' A Christmas Story. It's been a Bill Murray comedy, it's been a Robert Zemeckis CGI fest, and it's even been a Muppet movie, just to name a few. Next up for the iconic tale, though, is what we can only assume is a much darker, scarier twist from none other than Robert Eggers. Deadline reports that the man behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and last year's surprise hit Nosferatu, is in talks to write and direct an adaptation of the story for Warner Bros. And, though no cast is attached yet, Eggers is reportedly eyeing frequent collaborator Willem Dafoe to play the lead character of Ebenezer Scrooge. If you're like us, your mind is currently trying to figure out what an Eggers version of this story looks like, and it's not a pretty picture, in the best possible way. Eggers has largely avoided adaptations, instead preferring deep, personal research to inform his own original stories, though that slightly changed with Nosferatu. Next up, he's co-written and will direct Werwulf, another period horror piece which will focus on—you guessed—werewolves. When you think about A Christmas Story, though, it's just so in Eggers' wheelhouse. There's the original, period setting, of course. The mix of pathos with fantasy and horror. Lots of opportunities for evocative and beautiful sets, creatures, and costumes. Plus, for Hollywood, it's a name brand. It's kind of the perfect bullseye in every single way. And that's before you even put Dafoe in the role of Scrooge. It's basically the role he was born to play. Eggers is also attached to a reboot of Labyrinth, so there's no word about which film would go after Werwulf, which is currently looking at a Christmas 2026 release. But, if Christmas Carol is next, there seems to be a very good chance that Christmas 2028 might just scare the Dickens out of us.

Rosé Matches Jimin's All-Time Record

After months on the Billboard charts, "Apt." by Rosé and Bruno Mars is largely on the decline. This week, the tune falls on almost every tally on which it appears in the United States, though it remains a global powerhouse. While the cut is descending, it still manages to make history as it lives on the Hot 100 for another frame, matching an important all-time record. "Apt." has now spent 33 weeks on the Hot 100, Billboard's list of the most consumed tracks in the U.S. The tune is now tied with "Who" by BTS star Jimin for the title of the longest-charting track by any K-pop artist in American history. Last week, "Apt." was tied with "Dynamite" by BTS, with 32 stays on the Hot 100, for second place. Now, as it dips from No. 22 to No. 24, Rosé passes the South Korean boy band and matches with one of its members for this special place in the history books. The cut is still performing well enough at pop radio, and when it comes to pure purchases, that it will likely continue to live on the Hot 100 for at least one more frame — perhaps several. In a few days, when Billboard refreshes the rankings, there's a good chance that Rosé will be able to beat Jimin's showing and claim for herself the title of the longest-charting song by any K-pop act on the Hot 100. Rosé is best known for her K-pop output, both as a member of Blackpink and on her own. "Apt." is performed partially in Korean, although many of her solo cuts are in the English language. She was born in New Zealand, but musically, she is most recognized for her K-pop efforts. "Apt." lives on three of Billboard's radio tallies, including the Radio Songs, Adult Contemporary, and Adult Pop Airplay charts. While it's stepping back on all of them, the collaboration still appears inside the top 10 on the latter list. Impressively, after 33 weeks on the Digital Song Sales chart, "Apt." manages to climb this frame. The cut pushes just one space north to No. 17, selling just under 2,000 copies, according to Luminate.
