Newport County boss David Hughes delighted with positive start

The Exiles remain unbeaten under Hughes after following up their victory on penalties at Barnet in the Carabao Cup and last week's 1-1 home draw with Notts County with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in Sussex.
Second-half goals from Kai Whitmore and Liam Shephard earned County their first win on the road since February and set them up perfectly for Tuesday's Carabao Cup clash with Millwall at Rodney Parade (kick-off 7.30pm).
"It's really pleasing," said Hughes. "You look at the effort that went into the last 12 days; Barnet - unbelievable effort to come away with a really positive performance; last Saturday against Notts County - a top team with aspirations to get promoted and we were disappointed not to come away with more; and then [a win] against a team who have come down from League One and have invested in their squad.
"Let's be honest, at times they played some good football and our players deserve great credit because of how they've gone about their work, how they've shown discipline and a structure.
"I'm really proud of the players," he added. "It's not an easy place to come because they've got good players and a good style of play, so to play the way we did was really pleasing.
"Away from home we were aware that we had to manage the momentum of the game in key moments and at half-time we felt we had more in the tank and that, with a couple of subtle changes, we could get three points."
(Image: Gareth Everett) Hughes one again praised his players' attitude and commitment to cause.
"Success for us is making sure that everybody is all in - we don't carry anyone at any point in any game - and also understanding that the starters and the finishers have huge importance and that's been evident in every game so far," said the Exiles boss.
"We're not reinventing the wheel, we're just trying to be positive, get on the front foot and try to pass it, and ultimately let the players express themselves as well as having a structure and being difficult to play against.
"I'm delighted with the players and how they've applied themselves, but I'm not surprised because of the way I see them work."
(Image: Gareth Everett) County captain James Clarke missed Saturday's win after sustaining a minor injury in training and is unlikely to feature against Millwall.
"We'll see how he is on Monday," said Hughes. "He picked up a little knock in the week, just a little niggle, and he felt a bit tight after [training last] Tuesday. We are trying to manage him. We don't want to rush him, we want to ensure that what might be three or four days [out] doesn't become five or six weeks [on the sidelines].
"We want to make sure we've got him right for the next period of games where we play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday. We need everybody to be fit and available."

Northern Ireland forward hopes League One switch will ignite international career: ‘I just want to get as many caps as I can'

Northern Ireland forward Dale Taylor has revealed that his move from Nottingham Forest to Blackpool was motivated by his ambition to earn more caps for his county. The striker quit the Premier League club to sign a four-year deal at Bloomfield Road for fee believed to be north of £1m. The League One star has earned nine caps for Northern Ireland, making his senior debut in 2021. He explained: 'It's a big factor in my move. 'It all comes down to how well you are playing for your football club. Getting the call-up for Northern Ireland is massive. There's no better feeling than playing for your country - I've said it plenty of times. 'A boy from Belfast playing for Northern Ireland at Windsor Park is unbelievable - there's no better feeling than that. 'I'm young. I'm inexperienced but experienced at the same time. I just want to get as many caps as I can.' Several League One clubs were keen to land Taylor after a successful loan stint with Wigan Athletic in the division last term. He said: 'There were a few clubs in there, and Blackpool were one of them. I spoke to the manager (Steve Bruce) and some of my friends, and they all had good things to say about this club and where it's going, so that made it really easy. 'When people speak good about the club, it just stands out. Steve Bruce is a great manager and everything he's done in his career is unbelievable, so it gave me that hunger to work under him. I can't wait to get going and to improve. 'I'm here to do the best I can for the club, myself, my teammates, and the fans. I've been around League One for a couple of years now on loan, and I've really enjoyed it. Every loan got better and improved. 'The goal here is to aim to get to the Championship and get promoted. That's every player's aim, the manager and the staff - hopefully we can do that.' Taylor made his Blackpool debut during Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to Port Vale in the Carabao Cup. He will hope to make his league debut on Saturday when the Seasiders host Huddersfield Town.

Stirling County women prepare for season bow in bid to regain Premiership crown

The women's side head to the capital for a first game of the new season against well-tipped Watsonians. It's the start of a busy period in the rugby calendar as leagues get underway across the country ... with Stirling County's women first to take to the pitch for their Premiership opener tomorrow. ‌ The County women will be hoping to go one better this time around after being pipped in the final of last season's competition in a tight contest against Corstorphine Cougars. ‌ They kick off tomorrow with a difficult opening trip to Myreside, facing up to last season's third-placed outfit in Watsonians before opening their home matches against Garioch on August 31. ‌ A clash with defending champions Corstorphine then looms a week later in the capital. Head coach Mark Ainsworth has been busy with his side during a punishing pre-season, which culminated with a final intra-squad match at Bridgehaugh after original opponents Heriot's were forced to pull out of the match. Despite that blow, Ainsworth insists his side got some strong preparation in the bag for the Watsonians test on opening day. He told the club's social media channel: 'It was a tough game in tough conditions but it was really pleasing to see the quality on show out there. 'I was pleased as well with the physicality and some of the things we've been working on popped up and seem to be working so that's a real positive for us. 'Pre-season started a long time ago, we did a fitness block back in June and then we went into the pitch work from July so it's coming nicely in terms of the start of the season. ‌ 'I've had great input from [director of rugby] Ted Pollock in terms of the forwards and the backs are looking sharp this year. 'It's the first game of the season away from home against one of the best teams in the league so it's going to be tough for us, you're never totally sure how the team is looking until you play the first competitive game. ‌ 'But I'm hopeful for it with what we've shown so far and we're all looking forward to it.' The women's first XV will be led by skipper Jodie Murdoch, who is celebrating her 11th year at County and will be a key player in directing traffic from the scrum-half spot. She added: 'We're really excited to get the season underway. ‌ 'There's a great energy around the squad, with a strong leadership group in place and some exciting new faces joining us this year. 'Everyone's been working hard in pre-season and we're looking forward to building momentum, challenging ourselves and seeing what we can achieve together.' Murdoch is joined by four vice-captains in the squad, all of whom have boasted international experience with Scotland's youth sides in recent seasons. Back-rower Sam Taganekurukuru, second-rower player Holland Bogan and sisters Ceitidh and Ciorstaidh Ainsworth - who play at fly-half and centre respectively - round out the County group.

Jim Delahunt's expert betting tips on the Premier Sports Cup, EPL openers and all the weekend action plus his acca

STOCKPORT have made a blistering start after League One play-off failure last season and Dave Challinor's side can make it 9 points out of 9 away to Leyton Orient. County finished third behind Birmingham and Wrexham before running out of gas in the play-off semi-final against tomorrow's hosts but they've bounced back in style and revenge could be sweet at Brisbane Road. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The Premier Sports Cup is back this weekend Credit: PA The Hatters had beaten Bolton (home) and Wycombe (away) before Carabao Cup success over League Two Crewe on Tuesday and back-to-back home games will follow this second successive league match on the road. Tomorrow's hosts finished 9 points adrift of tomorrow's visitors last season and while they bounced back from defeat at Huddersfield to beat Wycombe last weekend, County have made a much more impressive start to the season. Challinor's players were comfortable winners at Wycombe last weekend before Wanderers knocked Leyton Orient out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and I reckon County represent superb value to inflict a second home defeat in a week on their hosts at the general 29/20. HUDDERSFIELD have yet to concede as they top League One on goal difference and the Terriers can maintain their 100% win record with another 3 points away to Blackpool at 11/8. High-profile signing Alfie May has only managed goals from the spot so far but Lee Grant's players even managed a penalties win over Championship Leicester midweek and Steve Bruce's Seasiders have made a shocking start to the season with little sign of improvement. DONCASTER can anchor a better than 12/1 League One treble with Stockport and Huddersfield with a win over Wycombe at 11/8 but I'm heading to League Two for a home win to anchor the top five Acca and it's CREWE who get the vote to beat Crawley at 4/5. The Railwaymen had been chugging along nicely before finding my headline bet Stockport too good midweek and the table-toppers are back in their comfort zone against a relegated Crawley side with no points and just a single goal from their first two league games. I've gone with HEARTS, MORTON, KILMARNOCK and LIVINGSTON in our featured Premier Sports Cup matches this weekend and ignoring the supposed Rangers/Alloa mismatch, I could see Partick against Ayr going into extra-time at 21/10 tomorrow. Scott Brown's visitors were hugely disappointing at home to Raith Rovers last Saturday and a similar lack of fire-power from Mark Wilson's Jags against Morton points to a tight encounter. The fifth team I want to be with in 90 minutes though is MOTHERWELL who head to in-form St Johnstone at what could be a huge value 13/10 after successive stalemates against Rangers and St Mirren. The Steelmen could easily have won both of those games to sit joint top of the Premiership and while St Johnstone cantered through the group stage before beating Partick and Ross County in the Championship, I can see Motherwell winning this one comfortably. The opening Premier League weekend sees Manchester United hosting Arsenal in the main TV match on Sunday afternoon but my toe in the water won't happen until Monday when EVERTON could prove too strong for Leeds at Elland Road at 19/10. The Championship moves into its second weekend with the clubs having also had some midweek Carabao Cup action and I reckon troubled SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY might be excellent single value at 11/4 at home to Stoke. Wrexham and West Brom can share the points in tomorrow's early kick-off at 11/5 and the same outcome can pay a 5/2 dividend in the Sunday lunchtime kick-off between Ipswich and Southampton. Saturday SINGLE STENHOUSEMUIR landed the bet at 2/1 last week and I'm going to wait for LIVINGSTON to reward punters at the same price Sunday. WEEKEND ACCA Four aways is a tall order but I reckon there's some value on the road this week and all 5 teams winning pays out at 52/1. Stockport 29/20 Huddersfield 11/8 Crewe 4/5 Hearts 6/5 Motherwell 13/10 ST MIRREN V HEARTS Saints were probably the happier side with the goalless draw at home to Motherwell last week but Stephen Robinson will have sharpened them up and Hearts may need two goals to win. Defender Miguel Freckleton should be more comfortable after that debut and Keanu Baccus should be reacquainted with Robinson's methods but Hearts have made an excellent start and look good for progression. Extra-time wouldn't be an outrageous suggestion at 5/2 but Lawrence Shankland is leading the way for a Hearts side in rampant scoring form and 6/5 in 90 minutes gets the vote. MORTON V ABERDEEN Morton fans were raging about a controversial Partick penalty last week but the 21/10 draw was the selection on this page and Dougie Imrie's side could give Aberdeen plenty of problems. Eamonn Brophy and Ali Crawford bring bags of cup-tie experience to the Greenock side and even Aberdeen's biggest fans sound fully aware that the Scottish Cup honeymoon period is over. Jimmy Thelin's side are no value at all at 1/2 and while the 3/1 draw's been attracting money all week, home advantage could be a massive help to Morton causing a 9/2 shock in 90 minutes. LIVINGSTON V HIBERNIAN Sunday 3pm I tipped Livingston to beat Falkirk last week at 13/8 and Davie Martindale's players will have been happy to see Hibs taken all the way by Partizan Belgrade on Thursday night. Scenes at Easter Road as Hibs players celebrate with fans after thrilling Partizan win Hibs can be backed at 13/10 to get past the Lions in 90 minutes and there's no doubt this is a trophy opportunity for the Easter Road side but Livi have scored 11 times in 3 games on their new surface and have been suitably underestimated. A second period of extra-time in 3 days for Hibs is priced up at 9/4 but Livingston are 2/1 to maintain their own excellent start tp the season and that's the bet. KILMARNOCK V DUNDEE UTD Sunday 3pm Jim Goodwin's players couldn't get the job done from 2-0 up at home and 4-2 ahead on aggregate against Austria Vienna and it's asking a lot to bounce back away from home at Kilmarnock. Stuart Kettlewell's side have lost a 2-0 lead at home to Livingston and come back from 2-0 down away to Hibs and this could be a serious chance of cup progression against a shattered United. The visitors are 21/10 with more extra-time at 5/2 but Killie's Easter Road heroics should entice a big Sunday crowd and 21/20 seems fair.
