Drivers issued 24 hour car insurance policy warning as Brits make costly mistake

Daily Mirror6 hours ago

An car insurance expert has revealed the biggest error British motorists make when purchasing protection cover for their vehicle — and it could be costing you an absolute fortune
Brits have been warned over a little-known error people make when buying car insurance that could have a significant impact on the amount they pay.
Much like in the early days of a relationship, coming across as needy won't do you any favours. Now is a great time to buy car insurance, as data from price comparison website Confused.com and WTW revealed that the cost has tumbled to a two-year low.

With this in mind, car finance specialist Tom Riley, owner of Simple PCP Claims, has provided some sage advice to ensure you get the best price possible. The expert explained that a great many motorists are falling into the trap of leaving their insurance renewal or new policy purchase until the very last minute, which can be a very costly mistake.

"Most people leave buying their car insurance until the last minute," the ace said. "But if you're starting your policy tomorrow, you're essentially telling insurers you're desperate — and they'll charge accordingly. Insurance companies know that last-minute buyers haven't had time to shop around properly. They can afford to charge more because you need coverage immediately."
So, by planning ahead and giving yourself plenty of time before your policy starts, you are far more likely to secure a better deal. Tom also provided another lesser-known tip — the day of the week you choose for your policy to begin can also influence the price. He recommends opting for a Sunday start date whenever possible.
This small adjustment could make a noticeable difference to your annual premium. He advised: "Sunday policies are consistently cheaper than weekday starts. It is a quirk of the system that most drivers do not know about."
Tom also recommends that adding an experienced named driver to the policy can lead to substantial savings — even if they are not a family member. This is a simple way to reduce costs without compromising on coverage. "A named driver with a clean record and years of experience can bring down your premium significantly," he added. "They don't need to live with you or be related."

Another important factor is your job title. Tom pointed out that small changes in how you describe your occupation could affect your insurance costs: "A 'chef' might pay more than a 'kitchen staff member', even though they're essentially the same job. It's worth experimenting with different but accurate descriptions."
With the cost of car insurance at a two-year low, these straightforward strategies could save drivers hundreds of pounds each year. But the biggest secret? According to Tom, you need to set your insurance start date at least 20 days in the future — 23 days being the sweet spot.
He advised: "Start shopping around a month before your policy expires. Buy 23 days in advance, and don't be afraid to tweak your job description. These small changes add up to serious savings."
Ultimately, a little forward planning and attention to detail could leave British drivers significantly better off. You never want to leave it until the last 24 hours, as then you're at the mercy of car insurance providers — who will see you coming a mile away when you are desperate.

Canadian dad goes shopping in Lidl supermarket and prices leave him gobsmacked

A Canadian man was gobsmacked after visiting a Lidl supermarket in the UK and seeing the cost of food products – as he never expected the prices to be like this While many of us Brits often complain about how much food products burn a hole in our bank accounts every week, a Canadian man insists the prices are cheap in UK supermarkets. A young Canadian woman, named Tara, is currently studying at university in Edinburgh. And recently, her dad came to visit. The pair took a trip to Lidl together – and the father could not believe what he saw. Amused by his reaction, Tara decided to film him walking up and down the aisles. ‌ The Canadian was flabbergasted at how affordable the products were – including a litre bottle of cola for 49p. He exclaimed: "What the f*** is that? That is f***ing crazy." ‌ He went on to do a big food shop and could not wait to show his partner. After picking up a cheap packet of eggs, he added: "You could probably buy your own rooster or hen for the price of a f***ing dozen eggs where I am from. It's true." The dad warmed people's hearts – especially when he proudly took a snap of all of the food products laid out on the counter, still in awe of the prices. In the comments section, he added: "There was a time when ours was decent but now its insane [in Canada]." Many people could relate to this struggle – as according to Money Corp, the average price of a litre of milk in the UK is £1, while in Canada it is £1.66. ‌ Plus, the average price of chicken breasts in the UK are priced at £5.70. In comparison, you would be paying around £8.93 in Canada. The price of groceries is 26.9% lower in the UK compared to Canada. One of the few exceptions in this aspect of the cost of living in Canada vs UK are restaurant prices, which are 5% higher in the UK than in Canada. Shocked by the difference, one individual commented on Tara's video: "Imagine thinking UK is cheap, what's going on?" Another said: "Imagine his reaction to the prices before the pandemic." And a third added: "Take him to the pound shop." Fellow Canadians also chimed in. One wrote: "As a Canadian in UK I can confirm his excitement. The cost of living and quality of life back home is not comparable to UK. I know our wages are much smaller but we live better off what we earn." Meanwhile, another said: "The prices in the UK are so much cheaper . We get ripped off in Canada and prices don't come down. It's an absolute joke."

Arne Slot warned Isak isn't easy as Newcastle coaches 'hold private talks'

Liverpool have been linked with another record-breaking transfer for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, with Arne Slot being told the formula for getting the best out of the Sweden international Arne Slot has been given clear instructions on how to maximise Alexander Isak's potential if Liverpool break the bank for the Newcastle striker this summer. It is understood that the Swedish striker needs specific man-management techniques in order to play to his full potential, something Newcastle coaches have managed to do by regularly holding private discussions. Isak, 25, has emerged as one of the Premier League's standout forwards during his three-year stint on Tyneside. He boasts an impressive goal-scoring record with the Magpies, netting 62 goals in 109 appearances across all competitions, while his scintillating form this season included 27 goals and six assists. ‌ That has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including the Reds, who have already shown their ambition in the transfer market this summer. Arne Slot has secured the signings of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz for £29.5million and a British transfer record-breaking £116m, respectively, with the latter set to join his former Bayer Leverkusen team-mate at Kirkby. ‌ Give Me Sport reports that Liverpool may be prepared to break the transfer record for a second time in the same window in order to land Isak, who Newcastle have valued at a whopping £150m. Isak has been described as Slot's 'dream' signing this summer and is widely regarded as a complete player. Yet, a deep dive into the player's mindset by The Athletic earlier this year revealed that the responsibility lies with the coaching staff at Newcastle to bring out the best in the Swede. The report stated that Isak needs to be kept "stimulated" to truly unlock his potential. The Newcastle coaching staff are said to hold regular discussions, constantly brainstorming ways to push him to reach new heights at the right time - only then can they reap the benefits of his lofty potential. From the moment he joined the Magpies, Isak's raw talent was undeniable, and the club never questioned his ability. According to insiders, Newcastle coaches felt he needed time to adapt to the Premier League, a process that is still ongoing, though a former staff member described him as having "uncoachable raw ingredients". Those who have worked with Isak say he "needs to be constantly challenged" and thrives on "creative work", given his creative playing style. Eddie Howe and his staff set targets for Isak to reach, something he reportedly enjoys as it keeps him engaged. An anonymous source who has worked closely with Isak was quoted saying: "There isn't a ceiling to what he can achieve," explaining why he is such a sought-after player and why Newcastle are determined not to let him go this summer. ‌ There's no question that Slot, who transformed a Liverpool squad that finished third the previous season into comfortable league winners with just one outfield addition, possesses the tactical acumen and man-management skills to push Isak to new levels. Although it's not entirely out of the question that Liverpool could top their £116m Wirtz bid to secure Isak's transfer to Anfield, reports indicate the Reds are more likely to submit an offer of around £100m. ‌ This is £16m less than Wirtz's fee and significantly lower than Newcastle's £150m valuation, which the northeast club can demand due to Isak's three-year contract. However, one factor that could work in Liverpool's favour is if Newcastle successfully sign Brighton's Brazilian star Joao Pedro, valued at £60m-£70m. According to talkSPORT, Newcastle's stance on Isak might soften if they bring in Pedro.

Vehicles don't actually use more coolant when the weather is hot, but overheat much more easily when the coolant is low. When refilling your coolant, your engine must be off - for your own safety. Then, fill the tank up to the "full" or "max" mark. If your car overheats, the cost to repair it can be astronomical so this one easy check could save you a huge amount of money. In the event that your car does start overheating, you must pull over as soon as you can - when it is safe. Switch on your hazard lights and get all passengers out of the car,. If possible, open your bonnet and take a big step back in case hot steam rushes out. Finally, leave your car for 30 minutes to let the engine cool down. There are several other checks that can keep your car road-ready in the hot weather. Car expert urges drivers to do two maintenance checks before summer heat – 'quarter test' could save on a tow Tyre pressure can be affected by warmer weather, as the heat can cause the air inside the tyres to expand. This can cause your tyre pressure to skyrocket, which comes with a host of issues. Not only does this increase the chance of tyre wear, but it can cause damage to your suspension - which is costly to repair. Some engine oils should also be replaced during periods of hot weather, if their viscosity will be affected by heat. The news comes as the UK braces for a heatwave which has already begun to smash records. Yesterday, Britain saw its hottest day of the year so far with temperatures in the South East climbing to 32.2C. In order to qualify as a heatwave, temperatures must be consistently reach a threshold temperature for at least three consecutive days. In the North and West of England, that temperature is 25C where it is 30C in the South. This weekend, meteorologists expect that the South East could see highs of a sweltering 33C, as the heatwave continues. Today, experts have warned that parts of the country could experience highs of 29C which has led thousands of Brits to flock to beaches across the country.
