Coco Gauff splits with key coach on eve of U.S. Open, practices with serve expert

New York Times7 hours ago
Coco Gauff has hit the panic button, five days before the start of the U.S. Open.
Gauff, the world No. 3, has parted ways with grip expert Matt Daly, who she hired at the end of last year's U.S. Open to strengthen her serve and forehand, two of the most important shots in tennis. She has brought on Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics specialist who helped rescue world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka's serve. MacMillan was on court with Gauff during practice at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center Wednesday, alongside her longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel.

A representative for Gauff confirmed the change, first reported by ESPN. MacMillan was not immediately available for comment.
After a period of upturn in late 2024 and early 2025, Gauff's serving troubles have returned. She hit 42 double faults in three matches during the WTA 1000 Canadian Open in Montreal, one rung below a Grand Slam, before hitting 16 in a quarterfinal defeat to Jasmine Paolini at the Cincinnati Open.
It was last year's U.S. Open exit to compatriot Emma Navarro, which also featured a string of double faults, that led Gauff to say that she didn't want to lose that way any longer. She fired coach Brad Gilbert, with whom she had won the title in New York in 2023, and brought in Daly. The partnership seemed to work, but the results have not held of late.
Jason Stacy, one of Sabalenka's lead coaches, brought in MacMillan in summer 2022 to fix a serve that was producing more than 20 double faults in matches. He got immediate results, as Sabalenka's double faults plummeted and she reached the semifinals of that year's U.S. Open. She has since gone on to win three majors on her route to the top ranking in women's tennis.
The U.S. Open singles main draws begin Sunday Aug. 24.

US Open mixed doubles live updates: Schedule, bracket, how to watch today

The US Open will crown its first champions of the Grand Slam tennis tournament on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The semifinals and finals of the reimagined mixed doubles competition will be held under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium, giving the fans in New York their first taste of prime time tennis this year. Mixed doubles began Tuesday, Aug. 19 with a full day of first-round and quarterfinal matches, and the compact event concludes quickly, giving players plenty of time to prepare for singles play, which begins on Sunday, Aug. 24. Because mixed doubles was moved nearly a full week before singles action gets underway at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the event was able to attract many of the sport's top stars, including a number of Americans. The mixed doubles semifinals feature one of the top American players in Jessica Pegula, who reached the US Open singles final last year. Pegula is teaming up with Great Britain's Jack Draper, the No. 5-ranked player in the world on the ATP Tour, and the pair earned the No. 1 seed in the mixed doubles competition. Five-time Grand Slam singles champion Iga Swiatek, who took the women's singles crown at the US Open in 2022, will also be in action with partner Casper Ruud. The No. 3-seeded team faces Pegula and Draper in one semifinal. The other semifinal features an all-American pair against an Italian duo, with Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison of the U.S. taking on Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. The semifinal winners will then face off later Wednesday night for the championship. USA TODAY Sports will have full coverage of the 2025 US Open mixed doubles semifinals and final. Months After ESPN Opt-Out, MLB May Increase Its National TV Exposure

When ESPN and Major League Baseball opted to end their long-time media partnership in February, both parties appeared to be at an inflection point. MLB's national relevance felt like it was shrinking. ESPN was looking to cut costs on some of its larger properties. What a difference six months makes, though. On Tuesday, Yahoo Sports' Kendall Baker reported that MLB was close to finalizing the outstanding portions of its media rights agreement for the 2026-28 seasons. The highlights, via Baker: What It Means For MLB It's hard to fully evaluate these deals just yet, if only because we don't have the financial details. But it seems highly likely that NBCUniversal will pay MLB something near to what it was getting from ESPN ($550 million per year) and Apple ($85 million per) under the previous arrangements. Netflix's portion would also add to that total, as would ESPN, buying Overall, MLB is highly likely to make more money from this reworked deal compared to the existing ones. Even if not, though, the move is still a win for baseball. It trades limited streaming reach on Apple TV+ for potential broadcast reach on NBC (assuming it's not a Peacock-only window). And then swaps cable for broadcast's larger audiences on Sunday nights. The Home Run Derby also gets a potential upgrade that puts it in front of a younger audience on Netflix. Among MLB's previous gripes with ESPN was that it was 'not pleased with the minimal coverage that MLB received on ESPN platforms' (via a memo from commissioner Rob Manfred). Appearing on NBC would potentially solve those issues. NBC's Sports Resurgence NBC shuttered NBC Sports Network at the end of 2021 as it was losing NHL rights and consolidating programming and leveraging Peacock. Yet since then, it's made aggressive moves to expand its sports footprint on TV. Over the last few years, NBCU has acquired broadcast rights for the Big Ten Conference, NBA and WNBA, and now potentially MLB as well. The company now has so many tentpole sports properties that it is considering launching a cable sports network again (according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal). A foothold with MLB on Sunday nights would also give NBC dominion over that night of the week year-round. Sunday Night Football would hand off to Sunday Night Basketball, which would give way to Sunday Night Baseball. Given what NBC has already managed while turning SNF into the NFL's biggest weekly showcase, it's easy to be optimistic about it doing the same for the NBA and MLB, elevating those matchups as well. ESPN's Everything App Gets Even Bigger ESPN manages to have its cake and eat it here, shedding the pricey national TV deal with MLB while picking up what could be a lucrative out-of-market product in Leading up to the launch of ESPN's new standalone streaming app, the company has been busy making the offering unavoidable for sports fans. In recent months, ESPN has added WWE events to its roster and acquired NFL Media properties like NFL Network and NFL RedZone (while also giving up 10% of the company to the NFL). By tacking out-of-market MLB games onto the service much in the way it has already done with various niche and college sports rights plus the former out-of-market games, ESPN very much plans to win over fans with the sheer volume of content available within this streaming app. Even more notable: Acquiring these out-of-market games allows ESPN to completely circumvent the need for a national media rights deal with MLB. If there's an interesting matchup one night, it can simply utilize the app's interface to give it the premium treatment and direct audiences there. MLB rights, much like the NHL rights it already has, also give ESPN an even longer list of recognizable logos for viewers to see while scrolling through the app. In an environment where all consumer expenses are being scrutinized, the idea that you'll get most MLB and NHL games on top of main ESPN feeds – even if you don't need them all – is an appealing sales proposition. Regardless of the financials involved, though, all sides seem to score a big win here. Assuming the sport doesn't implode when the collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of 2026, of course.

Seahawks host free agent guard Dalton Risner in Seattle for a visit

The Seattle Seahawks will host free agent guard Dalton Risner for a visit. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported the news Tuesday afternoon. Risner is a six-year veteran who spent 2019-22 with the Denver Broncos and 2023-24 with the Minnesota Vikings. He posted PFF Grades of 60 or above in 5 of his 6 seasons- a level of consistency Seattle has yearned for in the interior OL for the last several years. As Fowler mentions, Risner will have his pick of several suitors to sign with for the 2025 season. A rock-solid guard who just turned 30 in July and is known for not giving up sacks or penalties doesn't come around frequently in the free agent market, let alone right before the season. He visited the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday and might visit the Pittsburgh Steelers after Seattle. His experience would be a welcome addition to a young offensive line, whose current projected starting five are all still on rookie contracts. If the Seahawks can sign Risner, he'd slot in at right guard and move Anthony Bradford to the second unit. Bradford has shown flashes of his big time potential and limitations in his first two seasons but could benefit from more veteran leadership as well. He's still described just as Lance Zierlein did in his NFL Draft Profile- a powerful, plowing guard with obvious need for the right scheme. He's posted a few good PFF Grades but had his first truly elite performance of his career on Friday against the Chiefs, posting a 92.9 which ranked 2nd among all offensive players in preseason Week 2 only to Evan Engram's 93.9. New offensive line coach John Benton has succeeded with bigger OL in the past and could get the most out of Bradford, but Risner would answer the short-term questions and give him the opportunity to watch a veteran with a half-decade of starting experience for the first time. Follow Seahawks Wire on Twitter @TheSeahawksWire for the latest on Risner, Bradford and more as the 2025 NFL regular season approaches.
