Gingham has taken over as the trending dress print of summer 2025

Vogue Singapore14-07-2025
'There's no place like home,' Judy Garland famously said as Dorothy in The Wizard Of Oz. While Kansas may be perceived as a little more MAGA than 'Merry Old Land Of Oz' these days, the 1939 film is still constantly referenced more than 80 years later. Dorothy's gingham dress is arguably one of the most recognisable props from the film—second only to her ruby slippers—and occupies such a treasured place in the public consciousness that the costume is expected to fetch more than $1 million (£730,000) when it is eventually put up for auction, following a fraught dispute over its true ownership. Skip forward to 2025, and the merry old land of fashion is clearly still feeling the Dorothy effect, as gingham has usurped classic florals as the key dress print of this summer. While historically it may have conferred a certain girlish charm (it summons bucolic visions of, variously, summer picnics, The Great British Bake Off and grass-stained school uniforms), in recent years fashion brands have put a more contemporary spin on the print. For example, for Loewe's spring/summer 2025 men's show, Jonathan Anderson sent out angular, thigh-grazing shirts in black and pale blue check. Elsewhere, for autumn/winter 2025, Louis Vuitton opted for supersized checks fashioned into asymmetrical minidresses and sculptural shirts. Of course, there are plenty of more wearable, daytime options available off the runway, too. California brand Dôen has seen gingham success this season, with its Ischia and Leslie midi-dress both using strategic smocking to create eye-catching silhouettes. Younger designer brands, such as Frankies Bikinis and If Only If, have also delivered in this category, with the former collaborating with Bella Hadid on an edit of swimwear and ready-to-wear, which includes a number of ranch-worthy gingham dresses. Speaking of A-listers, Daisy Edgar-Jones was spotted in a Reformation gingham mini at Glastonbury, meanwhile girl-of-the-moment Olivia Rodrigo has been snapped in a number of gingham dresses, from vintage Ralph Lauren and Damson Madder, respectively. They say three's a trend, but three fashion girls? That's something to take note of. View this post on Instagram

It's also worth mentioning the abundance of Comme des Garçons gingham pieces available on the resale market—most notably from Rei Kawakubo's 1997 collection (often referred to as the 'lumps and bumps' show)—which featured gingham dresses distorted by bulbous padding on the bust, rear and midriff, creating an avant-garde silhouette that challenged the conventions of traditional women's clothing construction. Surely, the ultimate proof that gingham doesn't always have to be traditionally girly.
So, whether you'd prefer to defer to Dorothy, or be more Rei Kawakubo in your gingham styling this summer, rest assured that we've found a style for you. Scroll down to see and shop our edit of the best gingham dresses, available to buy now.

Trump, McMahon and Undertaker pay tribute to Hulk Hogan, Entertainment News

Donald Trump and wrestlers Vince McMahon and The Undertaker have added to the flood of tributes to Hulk Hogan. As a frantic 911 call ahead of the WWE hero's death was released. Hulk, born Terry Gene Bollea, died at the age of 71 on Thursday (July 24) morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida, with emergency services called to the scene before he was later pronounced dead at Morton Plant Hospital. News of his death has prompted tributes from across the world of entertainment and sport, with the wrestler, whose career spanned more than four decades, remembered for his charisma both inside and outside the ring. Donald Trump — whose run for re-election as US president was supported by Hulk in the final year of his life — said on his Truth Social platform: "We lost a great friend today, the 'Hulkster'. "Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way — strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart." Trump also recalled Hulk's support on the 2024 presidential campaign trial, saying he gave an "absolutely electric speech at the Republican National Convention". Trump, 79, added: "He entertained fans from all over the world, and the cultural impact he had was massive. "To his wife Sky and family, we give our warmest best wishes and love. Hulk Hogan will be greatly missed!" Former WWE CEO Vince added in a rare statement: "The world lost a treasure today. Hulk Hogan was the greatest WWE Superstar of all time, someone who was loved and admired around the world. "He was a trailblazer, the first performer who transitioned from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon. His grit and unbridled thirst for success were unparalleled — and made him the consummate performer. "He gave everything he had to the audience whom he appreciated, respected and loved. He leaves us with one of his favourite expressions, 'Train, take your vitamins and say your prayers'. "Today, we pray for him." The Undertaker, 60, said on X: "The wrestling world has lost a true legend. His contributions to our business are immeasurable, and for that, I am appreciative. Thank you, Hulk Hogan." Sylvester Stallone, Ric Flair and Donald Trump Jr are among the other famous faces who have led tributes to Hulk. They come as a frantic 911 call ahead of Hulk's death was released. Emergency crew were called to his home on Thursday. In the call first obtained by TMZ, an operator can be heard saying on the line that the emergency was for a "cardiac arrest". Police said in a press conference no foul play was suspected in his death but an official cause of his death is still to be confirmed. [[nid:720589]]

The bag you can wear: Inside La Notte by Adrian Fürstenburg

Following his Vogue Singapore Innovation Prize win for ProjectEx—the lab-grown exotic leather startup pushing boundaries in sustainable luxury—Adrian Fürstenburg expands his namesake label with La Notte, a sculptural new addition rooted in his design ethos. Designed in Singapore and made in Italy, the new seasonal release reimagines the silk scarf as a functional, sculptural handbag. Its light, foldable and effortlessly elegant form makes the ultimate warm-weather essential from golden hours, evening transitions and everything in between. La Notte's signature saddle-stitch detailing on the tan leather handle adds a refined touch to this versatile silk scarf bag. Courtesy of Adrian Fürstenburg La Notte, which means 'the night' in Italian, transforms a 67 x 67cm silk scarf, printed with golden leopard and baroque motifs, into a striking summer accessory. Expertly knotted onto a structured tan leather handle featuring saddle-stitch detailing, the scarf moulds into the perfect slouchy carryall for all your travel essentials and seamless shifts from sun-soaked days to moonlit evenings. The best part? Lightweight and foldable, the bag is designed for versatility with the ability to be untied and worn separately as a wrap or accessory, making La Notte as multifunctional as it is beautiful. 'As a trained textile designer, patterns and motifs are always a big source of inspiration, and I loved how my team and I created this concept.' Fürstenburg's background in textile design is evident in the bag's rich patterns and thoughtful craftsmanship. The golden leopard and baroque prints evoke a sense of timeless elegance paired with a playful spirit—a signature that brings depth to the piece without overwhelming its simplicity. 'La Notte came from a simple idea: how do you turn something beautiful into something practical without complicating it?' Fürstenburg explains. This balance between softness and structure, luxury and ease perfectly captures the quiet confidence of modern summer style. Attention to detail continues with options for personalisation, including foil monogramming in gold or silver and a choice of matching hardware. Measuring approximately 35cm wide by 30cm high (depending how the scarf is knotted), La Notte is sized for easy portability without sacrificing presence. Produced in limited quantities, each piece exemplifies Fürstenburg's commitment to slow luxury and heirloom-quality design. Striking the balance between trendy and timeless, La Notte reflects the scarf-inspired accessory movement seen unfolding across spring/summer 2025 runway and street style—from printed scarves worn as wearable art at Louis Vuitton's spring/summer 2025 show to modular, convertible bag styles showcased by Bottega Veneta. Designers have embraced bold prints and versatile scarves as integral styling elements this season, but La Notte pairs its dramatic motif with premium leather, polished hardware and refined construction. The result is a piece that feels modern and trend-aligned yet retains a lasting allure well beyond the current fashion cycle. Styling La Notte is simple yet impactful: knot the scarf handle over a breezy white linen dress for a casual daytime look, or untie the scarf to wear as a chic wrap over evening wear. It's sculptural form and tactile silk invite movement, making it a companion that carries both essentials and style. La Notte stands as a reflection of Adrian Fürstenburg's dedication to combining craftsmanship, innovation and emotional resonance in every creation as it offers itself not only a practical accessory, but an emblem of effortless elegance for summer and beyond.
