Zoe Slater is an EastEnders icon. But cruel reaction to her return has left me fuming… everyone is missing key thing
WHEN Zoe Slater's mascara-smudged face appeared on my TV screen, I let out a little gasp.
Michelle Ryan 's long-awaited EastEnders return can only mean more incredible, explosive storylines - 'You ain't my muvva!' is the greatest line in soap history - so what a shame her big moment was completely overshadowed.

I had seen all the rumours about her soap return on social media, and I even carefully studied the teaser clip producers had released just hours earlier which was apparently full of 'clues' about a former castmate's comeback.
And even though I knew it was Zoe being barked at by Stacey Slater while hungover and hiding under a blanket on Lynne's sofa, I was still elated to see her reappearance after two decades.
Vile jibes
But I was shocked - actually, disgusted - to see Michelle's return blighted with vile criticism about her appearance.
'Put a lot of timber on,' one nasty troll spat, while another bitched, 'She's spent the 20 years eating burgers.'
Another made reference to Michelle 's career in America where she starred as the lead in TV drama Bionic Woman, saying 'She let herself go a lot. I thought she went to Hollywood? Most people who go there come back thin.'
Vilified for our looks
I honestly despair. I'm so ashamed that we live in a world where it's become the norm for faceless keyboard warriors to spit venom and hate at women.
I'm sick of women being constantly vilified over our appearance. And we can never win, by the way.
We lose weight and we are too skinny or we look ill. We put on weight and we are fat or we've let ourselves go.
Wrinkles mean we are past it and haggard, yet any form of beauty treatment to turn back the years and we are full of ourselves and vain.
Zoe Slater left terrified and hiding major secret in EastEnders - as Michelle Ryan returns to Walford after 20 years
I can't help but think that it's now become so normal to live in a world of airbrushed images and filters that society has forgotten what real women actually look like.
It's almost like the toxic pockets of society completely freak out the moment they see anything that doesn't fit this unachievable mould.
Michelle is a beautiful 41 year old woman, who just for the record was once voted one of FHM's sexiest women.
It doesn't matter why she decided to come back or that her Hollywood career didn't span decades - when did that become the measure of a successful career?
But that's not important. What matters is that she is an incredible actress, and due to her much-loved and memorable impact on the soap, was given the chance to come back.
Michelle's character Zoe, Kat Slater's gobby daughter, was iconic back in the day.
Who can forget her trying to get pregnant by Dirty Den before helping his wife Chrissie Watts to bump him off?

EastEnders' new top boss, executive producer Ben Wadey, even said Zoe was his 'wishlist of returnees.'
It doesn't matter why she decided to come back or that her Hollywood career didn't span decades - when did that become the measure of a successful career?
It's also totally irrelevant that Michelle doesn't look the same as she did in 2005, because the fact is none of us do.
And that is the key thing these keyboard warriors are missing - news flash - women aren't stuck in a time warp, they age, grow and change.
And if these faceless trolls ever have the guts to unmask themselves, they will see they haven't defied ageing either.

EastEnders fans say the same thing as new detail about Zoe's return uncovered
EastEnders fans learnt more about Zoe Slater's return storyline during tonight's episode - but one detail from Stacey's side of the story left them scratching their heads During tonight's EastEnders, fans got to see more of Zoe Slater and learn about her reasons for returning after last night's bombshell cliff hanger. Following the reveal last night, during tonight's episode, fans learnt that Stacey had rented a flat after initially leaving Walford with her kids to stay with Lynne for a while. Last month, following her daughter Lily going to stay with her biological dad Ryan, Stacey took Arthur and Hope to stay with Lynne. During the latest episode, Stacey was heard telling Alfie that Stacey had rented the flat in London to get some space from Lynne, and had allowed a struggling Zoe to stay for free. Alfie later found out that Zoe owed dangerous loan sharks in Spain some money - although it was later revealed she had been sending the texts to herself in a bid to get money. Despite all the drama going on, fans were focused on how Stacey could afford to rent a flat by herself in London. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one questioned: "So, Stacey isn't working, she pulled the kids from school, gone off to wherever it is she's at now, and rented a furnished flat — on what money? Shouldn't she be in worse financial straits since Martin died and she's not slinging baps?" The conversation continued over on Reddit, as another fan penned: "Still not sure how we're expected to think she can afford it when Martin's dead so there's no income, Lily's with Ryan so no child support, and she hasn't worked since Martin died either." A third questioned: "Why is Stacey renting a flat? Surely she would have had to sign a lease/contract. How long is she planning to stay away? How can she afford rent for a flat when she's not working?" Elsewhere in the episode, fans were left on a huge cliffhanger after Kat tracked down Alfie's whereabouts with the help of Tommy's tracking app. Realising her husband had lied about being in the pub, a furious Kat turned up to the address he was at. She then began shouting through the letter box telling Alfie to answer the door, but with Zoe adamant she doesn't want to see her mother - how will things unfold? Although the soap aren't giving much away about Zoe's upcoming storyline, actress Michelle Ryan opened up a little on what fans can expect. "I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess," she said. She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own. "She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story." EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Glen Powell in action in Glasgow as city is transformed for shooting of new J.J. Abrams film
You could be forgiven for thinking you were seeing double. But the uncanny resemblance was a much-needed feature as Hollywood hunk Glen Powell was joined by his stunt double as they filmed a new sci-fi fantasy on the streets of Glasgow. The 36-year-old American was seen warming up for the scenes for Ghostwriter, a fantasy adventure currently being filmed in Scotland that also stars Samuel L Jackson. He was seen doing intense exercises in front of bemused cast and crew before his stunt double was spotted hanging off a bus as he pursued a girl. Powell was on set with director J.J. Abrams, who is behind films like Cloverfield and the more recent Star Wars films, with the city thought to be doubling up as a futuristic New York. Filming started in Glasgow on Saturday after other scenes were shot in London on April 26. Streets have been transformed to create the fictitious setting, including unusual signage, faux brick walls and a makeshift subway entrance all being spotted. As well as Powell and Jackson, the movie is due star Jenna Ortega - best known for playing Wednesday Adams in the Netflix TV show named after the character. Produced by Warner Bros, the film marks Abrams' first project since Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Powell will be familiar with the city, having filmed scenes in Glashgow for Edgar Wright's reboot of 1987 action flick The Running Man. Like the current filming, a number of sites in the city were used to emulate the streets of New York, with scenes shot across the city centre, the West End and the SEC Armadillo.
