Newcastle's Eldon Square says fashion brands are performing strongly
Fashion may not have been the most buoyant category during the spring but Newcastle's Eldon Square mall said fashion retailers with stores there have performed strongly.
Clothing, accessory and footwear sales in April rose an impressive 6.7% year-on-year, for instance, at the mall for which fashion is a key focus. That was during a month in which Office for National Statistics figures showed fashion sales across the UK falling 1.8%.
'Fashion at Eldon Square is not only holding steady, but thriving. Driven by a mix of high street favourites and heritage brands, Eldon Square is cementing itself as one of the North East's most prominent shopping hubs,' its managers said.
That April performance was 'supercharged by a strong Easter weekend' and the strength continued into May. It wasn't as strong as April but still saw the mixed fashion category growing 1.5%. Sales were helped by the centre's Spring Summer Fashion campaign, in which the new brand positioning and website were launched.
Fashion brands at the mall range from AllSaints to H&M, Hollister, Levi's, Mango, New Look, Next, Oliver Bonas and Superdry as well as department stores such as Fenwick, John Lewis and M&S.
And the company said the strength shown by fashion at the centre is 'largely down to the variety on offer'.
